Music To My Ears

Hi guys,

This week hive Ghana have again come out with wonderful topics for us to choose from. This time out the theme is centred on African and Western culture. So for this topic, I’d be going in for the music side. But before I start, let me ask you, what is the type of music that you like listening to? For me, I like good music. I don’t know what type of music I like. To make this more understandable, let me say I don’t even know the difference between Afrobeat music and let’s say highlife.

Yes, I do know some of the genres of music, like reggae, cools but apart from this example I don’t know the difference.

I like to think that am someone who likes listening to older songs. I believe older songs( songs which were sung in the past) actually have a lot more melody to them. These days anyone at all can be a musician, all they need to do is sing rubbish and get TikTok stars to promote it or use it for a dance video and it’s a hit.

To give you an example; look at this song by Shalipopi. He recently released a song titled Sandalili, a song which makes absolutely no sense but has gone viral because of TikTok. Some people think the song makes sense because they have somehow gotten meaning out of it. I know there are a group of people who don’t find meaning in the song but does the artist really care? He has gotten his views which is the most important thing to him. I personally haven’t even checked out the song, I just hear it from time to time on TikTok and on Snapchat stories but apart from that I’ve never really heard half of the song.

So back to the question on the ground. Would I like a Western type of music or an African type? Before I even start let’s make it clear that Africans have somehow infused or should I say added the Western style to the way we sing. Rap I believe is a Western type of music which has been adapted into the African style of music which a lot of people seem to enjoy. These days you can hardly tell an African from a Western style music if the person is doing rap. These rappers are all slang these days.

For me, I have a music playlist on YouTube and it’s of western music, in this playlist I have a whole list of songs. Most of these songs were sung in the 80s and some were sung in the 90’s. But I do enjoy them up until these days. Some of those songs were released when I wasn’t even born but somehow I got to realize that I like old and hood music so I’ve been listening to it since.

I also have African music on my phone which I do play from time to time when I want to listen to music in my free time or when am doing something. But then all am saying is that even though I hardly listen to music but then I don’t seem to have a preference between an African songs and western songs.

What do you think? Is there something you want to add? What is your choice?

Nice to hear that you like listening to African music. Everyone likes music it depends on everyone's taste. I listen to music in my spare time and listening to music during any work can add to the fun of work. Best wishes to you.

Yh I do like African music as much as I like foreign music. I don’t think I have a choice cut out for any as long as it’s good music.

Oh my, look at the likes of Patapaa. Who would have thought that this guys song will blow but see how people jammed to it. It’s all about exposure, just a little push and your music is out there.

Personally, I’m an all round person and I only listen to songs that make sense.😄

Oh well that makes sense. Patapaa didn't need to publicize his song though as it the beat made it hit.

Am all round too as long as I enjoy it.
