Sinister Ducks, The Nerves, Peter Case: Three Tune Tuesday

avatar

On Friday arvo we were driving up to Victoria's High Country, a five hour drive from where we live. Of course we hit the horrendous Friday traffic, but it never seems to bad when you have good radio to listen to. Melbourne radio station RRR always brings the goods, throwing both new songs and old that we haven't heard before.

This song was my fun fact of the week - I had no idea Blondie's version of it was a cover! Did you? Dad had 'Parellel Lines' on vinyl and my sister and I used to listen to it a lot and knew all the lyrics. But it was originally done by 'The Nerves'. According to wiki:

The Nerves were an American power pop trio formed in San Francisco California in 1974 and later based in Los Angeles, California featuring guitarist Jack Lee, bassist Peter Case, and drummer Paul Collins. All three members composed songs and sang. They managed an international tour in the U.S. and Canada, including dates with The Ramones, and performances for the troops as part of the United Services Organization (USO).

They didn't last very long apparently, but this song was their most popular, and of course Debbie Harry would go on to cover it.

The thing is, though I hadn't heard of The Nerves, I had heard of their bassist and songwriter Peter Case. Many years ago Dad had burnt me a copy of his album, 'Let Us All Now Praisy Sleepy John' and sent it to me when I lived in the UK. I loved it because it reminded me of Dad. It's folky acoustic with some great lyrics.

I'm finishing with a bit of a comical one - RRR radio does find some crazy songs that'd never be found on mainstream radio. I reckon you'll love this one or at least it'd bring a smile to your face - and you might not ever see ducks the same way again. According to this song, as they waddle about it the park at night they could be 'Sneering and whispering and stealing your cars, reading pornography, smoking cigars!', and they'll 'sneer at your hairstyle and sleep with your wife.', and dress in 'plaid jackets and horrible shoes' and get divorces and turn to booze. So be warned! Oh, and hence the wierd ducks image above by me and Midjourney. 🦆🦆🦆

Hope you enjoyed this week's #threetunetuesday, brought you be @ablaze. What are you listening to this week?

With Love,

Very good choice. I didn't even know these guys exists and I'm the "American". Great stories in all of these including the mighty ducks. It's like someone added an extension to the Wall.

Cool. I know The Nerves, they had some really nice songs, but this one became a global hit with the Blondie cover.

I had no idea, but I love this original almost as much as Debbie's version. The second one's the right vibe for me, but hands down, I love the sinister ducks one the best. I have a thing about creepy ducks (made-up ones, mind) and this is right up my alley xD Cheers for sharing!

I'm listening to Blondie right now. Don't know if it will last all week 😉 They had so many hits when I was growing up and were so overplayed on the radio I grew tired of them. But now I can listen to them again and appreciate it.

OMG, Hanging On the Telephone wasn't a Blondie original??? I've just learned something new today, too.

Ain't Gonna Worry No More is one that I'm going to be humming all night long. The more I enjoy music, the more I find myself really appreciating folk and blues.

You know, growing up I loved punk and thrash and high energy music, and dub and reggae too, but folk and blues and Americana has always been in the background coz of my Dad, and I always found myself listening to it, including world music. Now, gone is the high energy, so it's always more dub, folk, blues, world - with a peppering of post punk 🤣

Yeah how crazy!!!!!! I feel like the world is divided into two people .. those that knew that and those that didn't!!

Boom!!! This is the perfect template for Three Tune Tuesday. Three quality songs, an interesting story to accompany each, but not so much that it feels like a task to read it all, spot on @riverflows and I love your Dad by the way, for he has shown you what good music is and you always bring it to your posts, I am looking forward to checking out the Peter Case album, as that song you shared was great. Oh and thanks for the Blondie education as well, that was news to me! The ducks song, brilliant, can just imagine ye laughing and bopping away in gridlock traffic to this :)

It's grand if I break them up over the week, but when I leave them till Tueaday and Wednesday, it's a headfuck and thus the break for weeks 107, 108, 109. When I return in week 110 I might change it up and only feature a maximum of ten in the showcase... we'll see...

and ya, looking forward to checking out that Peter Case album.. Fair play..

Yeah I feel same about the doing Hive Garden wrap up. I'm away for a few weeks so thank God @owasco is doing it for the community then. You definitely need to work out a manageable system.

Choosing the ten most well presented or written posts might be a good way to do it. A top ten. You could always rotate through regular folk as well. Anything that saves your sanity mate, we both know we do it for love not money ❤️❤️

Thanks a mill... yeah I'm seriously thinking something like a top five or top ten based on music, writing and creativity is the way to go as a showcase with forty or more entries every week it's just too tough to maintain.
