Cup of Cha & Oranges in Porridge

Is someone keeping record of how many times I've given up coffee in the seven years I've been posting on chain? I've had various substites, usually homemade, from dried mushrooms to cacao and ashwagandwa and everything in between. After a hellish two weeks of hormonal related nervous system uber stress, and desperately trying to restore order, I haven't even had to think about giving up coffee again - it's been just a good old tea with oat milk all the way. Turns out, I quite enjoy a cuppa char in the morning (British slang term - with cha coming from the Chinese word chá (茶) for tea, from trade with Asia in the 19th-20th centuries). I'm feeling better. Less frazzled, and less desperately seeking relief from physical symptoms of anxiety, which if you've experienced at all, is hell on this good earth.

@ablaze wrote about a healthy breakfast the other day, and whilst I have my mother's voice in my head telling me to vary my diet, I can't go past porridge at the moment (@honeydue, this is my perfection - don't sweat a recipe, just experiment and find how YOU like your oats) with oranges. Yep, novel - or rather navel, haha. Probably because my system is craving what both provide - oats support normal nervous system function because they have B1 and thiamine, magnesium, iron and complex carbs, and oranges because of vitamin C, which is involved in the production of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and helps protect nerve cells from oxidative stress. Add some unsweetened vanilla collagen powder and a sprinkle of omega 3 seed and some coconut yoghurt and some psyllium if I fancy and I'm happy. Jamie can keep his vegemite and avo on toast.

Jamie had read the other day that people who eat the same breakfast every day do so because of childhood trauma - it's one thing they can control and is consistant in a day which can throw curveballs at you.

For a minute I believed that was his story as he does have vegemite on toast every day, sometimes with cream cheese, sometimes with avo, but then I remembered he's perfectly happy if I make him scrambled eggs or fried halloumi and tomato on toast. A bit like how he's allergic to almonds unless they are on an almond croissant. Geminis can convince themselves of any bullshit.

The more important question is, is the tea and porridge helping?

Maybe. For now.

With Love,

Glad you are doing well with giving up coffee. I wish I put as much thought into breakfast as you and my wifey does. But alas, I will most times grab leftovers :-)
Hope you have a great morning. Now back to my cup-a-joe. The one vice I refuse to give up.

American coffee, I hear, is vastly inferior. Sorry you have to endure that 😁

What's your favourite breakfast?

Oof. I hope you're feeling better soon, love. Porridge with orange is not a combination that would naturally come to mind, but I will have to try it, for sure. I have been playing with butter and salt and other suggestions I've had around here, and can confidently say I'm making my way to a proper bowl of porridge. Yours looks milkier, though. Time to experiment once again.

Seriously, feel better.

Also, the Brits also say cha? I did not know that. :O It's quite common in Slavic languages and Romanian as well, to use some version of "chai". Cool.

It's definitely a thing in some part of the UK! I was suprised to hear it.

I know right, would never have thought of orange but it works so beautifully! Sharp and fresh against milky and creamy. I think I've always been a fan of citrus in this way though - lemon tarts, orange cake etc.

Oatmeal is one of my breakdast staples, but I don't remember ever adding orange. I'll have to try a lovin' spoonful of it.

I've tried to quit coffee many times, and am trying again. Now even just a half cup makes my heart race. That stuff is also known to put one into a fight or flight mode, anxious and suggestible. I'm not a fan of Kauffman's, but this interview with Jason Christoff on the subject is really good.

Oh yeah I'm the same - coffee is having a really adverse effect on me!

And yeah I dont know what came over me to put orange in porridge but honestly it makes so much sense, especially in the winter when you need the extra c'S! I'll have alisten to that podcast.

I love porridge with chicken or we called that Aroz caldo and then pair to black coffee. Hmm, good thing you were able to give up coffee but for me coffee makes my day.

I love one cup of good, strong Colombian coffee in the morning. But truthfully, I bought a nice tea kettle and a variety of teas, but I can't seem to get into making it daily. My hubby likes to have steel oats with fruit in the mornings lately. Funny, he has been having some health issues, too. I wonder if that is why he is craving his oats. Hope you feel better soon!
