OPENMICHIVE BobMArley 3 Little Birds.jpg

This week's theme really struck a chord with me as my partner has been experiencing severe anxiety which I've been trying to help her through with some meditation and breathing techniques I learned over many years battling anxiety.

"Be Okay." This theme is chosen by our community's recent Spotlight Artist: @maryjacy.

to go straight to the music fast forward to 1.26 minute mark 🙂

It seems to me that mental health problems are one of the great troubles of our age as there is still a stigma attached to these diseases, along with a lack of proper understanding (or often effective treatment) by doctors and psychiatrists.

With the greatest respect to the 'very new' field of medical treatment of psychiatry, I know someone who works in a mental health facility, and I have been at the receiving end of doctors throwing SSRI drugs at me, none of which worked. My friend said that all he sees in his place of work (the mental health unit he works at) are various therapists working out the right mixtures of pharmaceuticals to remove the problem behaviour around any given patient's mental health problem, there is little to no focus on finding the root cause of any given condition, largely because they are approaching something which needs a holistic approach through a very narrow lens of pharmacology. He told me he'd seen about 20% of people who come into his place leave better off than when they checked in. Often, they leave - in his words - "either a zombie or a bigger basket case than when they came in."

In regards to my experience with mental health problems, seriously, I have taken virtually every set of drugs for depression/anxiety disorder, and they all made the problems worse within a 6 month period, with the worst cases ending in suicidal ideation and other 'treatments' leaving me with visual and auditory hallucinations. When we add to this that you need to taper off these drugs over months of time, still experiencing these strange symptoms, quite honestly it is a crap shoot of drugs. Doctors are just firing one SRI after another at you until they find the one that works, but if none of them works... you are literally going to spend 10 years of your life suffering on an emotional rollercoaster for no good reason.

Yet, in my country, the UK, the NHS doesn't prescribe mindfulness or meditation as a first course of treatment for 'so-called' lesser mental health problems such as depression/anxiety disorder.

This is why I have suggested gently to my girlfriend that she try a certain breath technique focused on feeling the out-breath hit the top lip while taking three deep breaths before returning to normal breathing. I even suggested a mantra if her busy thoughts that fuel the anxiety aren't abating with her focusing on her breath.

The reason why I suggested this? The only thing that brought me to a place of peace and control over my depression/anxiety, to the point where it rarely affects me now, is a combination of exercise and meditation.

But I'm forgetting, Hive open mic is about music and good vibes. Well, sometimes some people are in a place where they're not feeling so great... and in this instance, I'd always play them Bob Marley's song 'Three Little Birds'.

Bob Marley is one of my favourite 'feel good' musicians anyway, but this song encapsulates another thing which helped me feel more in touch with the world consequently removing the power of my depression, which is to observe nature.

Tony Gilbert, a long-time friend of Marley, was present at the time he was writing the song and elaborated, "Bob got inspired by a lot of things around him, he observed life. I remember the three little birds. They were pretty birds, canaries, who would come by the windowsill at Hope Road."

I hope my rendition at least brings a smile to your face. I'm stepping out of my comfort-zone and playing/singing at the same time, I really hope I've not murdered this classic with my inability to play and sing well at the same time 😂

I also hope this song reminds everyone out there that it is OK to 'Be Okay'.

Love and peace to everyone out there.

Thanks for reading/listening 🙂🌿

I have also added @hiveopenmic as a 2% beneficiary of this post, as although I don't have much money, I would like to give back to this community, as I think it is a fantastic community and challenge that survived even the hard fork of Hive from steem. Well done to all involved moderating/running HOM 😄

This is one of my favorites song,I could remember we use to play it every time while I was child and it's nice listening to the song from you, and I must say that you sing so well.. Kudos 💯

It is my girlfriend who has been going through the ringers with anxiety recently, I myself am pretty stable these days. But thank you for your concern, inner peace is just around the corner i Know it 😉 jokes, in truth I feel peaceful these days a lot due to over 8 years pretty consistent meditation practice and I'm trying to introduce some of these practices to my partner to help her.

I'm glad to to see you singing here, music is Life and it bring joy to the heart

As you express here, music is such a joyous affirmation to the heart I swear it is the best medicine for worry and woes.

Ha ha, and also good to hear I chose one of your childhood fav songs, truth be told it was one of mine also. My mother used to play lots of Bob Marley when I was a kid, but as a very young child the imagery of the three little birds used to enrapture me and I'd stare out the window watching the birds in our garden.

Thanks for listening and checking out my digital busking @maryjacy 🙂🌿

I believe that everything will be okay with your girlfriend, she have you! I believe you're always there for her.

It was my dad who love to listen to it then, and I love listening to it anytime he plays it, and he also love listening to lucky dube😀.

It's amazing the effect that the music parents played when you were a kid has on you. Bob Marley always lifts my mood, but also makes me think of sunshine, trees and grass, and when I think about it... Bob was always the first choice when my mum threw garden parties in the summer. It was always playing when us kids were up and running about in the afternoon being raucous, enjoying the sun.

That memory just came back to me listening to some Bob on YouTube now and I can see it picture perfect, a memory that comes from when I was about 5 years old. Lol, I'm over 40 now... the power of music 🙂🎼

I believe that everything will be okay with your girlfriend, she have you!

P.s. yes, I'm there for her 100%. She sometimes comes and looks at my blogs, although she's not on hive, so if she sees this I hope she knows my meditation suggestions come from a place of love.

Those of us who suffer from anxiety know how difficult it can be, but having someone who is always with you makes the burden easier and there are certainly many ways in which this condition can be more bearable, from meditation and breath control and that we never lack love from our loved ones.
Thank you for delighting us with those wonderful strumming on the guitar and with that good vibe that characterizes you, I appreciate your story, I hope that every day things get better for everyone.
A hug!

I couldn't agree more. But she is also a musician, she plays the ukulele in a band that perform in my city and it is so true that music is one of the greatest healers. I've never seen her playing without a smile playing about her lips.

I'm just glad if I helped spread some of the good vibes flying around the hive open mic this week @musicandreview 🙂🌿

Go for it man! It is easy enough to jam along too.
A lot of E and A with some D thrown in for good measure.

But all jokes aside, it is the good vibes
that Bob brought with his Reggea rhymes
that makes ya feel so nice.

A little poem to add to the great feeling I'm seeing all over the hive open mic this week. I love the 'Be Okay' theme as well. Because sometimes being Okay might not mean being your best, but it is Okay, tomorrow is a new day.

Ha ha, daft philosophy has been ringing in my head all day.
I'm going to see Lowkey perform later so hopefully his hard-hitting no nonsense hip hop will fuel that philosophy into something different for tomorrow.

Thanks for checking out the post stickupcurator 🙂🌿

Hey dude! Did you know about Sapphire.clinic.Uk? It’s a legal cannabis dispensary and they prescribe oils and flowers for anxiety and depression, 2/3rds of Uk patients are prescribed legal cannabis through private healthcare.
It’s not for everyone, I dunno if you tried medicinal cannabis before, it’s legal in Uk for medicinal purposes.
I am with sapphire and they have done me proud the past 4 months.
All the best dude! Then three little birds will make you feel alright! ;) good stuff man, bob is so healing especially when played and sing on guitar through tough times. You seemed the right help from faithful bob! 🙏
I hope that helps bro, check out Sapphire clinic 👍:)
Also seeking good Buddhist help saved my life bro! It was amazing, tap into the ancient mindfulness 🙏
Peace my friend

Hi m8.

Thanks for the recommendation, I truly have nothing against cannabis use and think it is much safer than alcohol for most people for sure.

But, I am one of the unlucky few who smoked weed habitually from a much too early age, and I ended up with cannabis psychosis at around the age of 23 when I had to stop smoking it. Seriously, I can't even be in a room with someone smoking weed because of the hotbox effect 😂

I've experienced people taking this the wrong way, especially if cannabis has really helped them, but cannabis psychosis is very real... and before you ask yes, I've tried having just one pull on a joint (about 2 years ago now) to see if the problem has gone, and no it hasn't whatsoever. The best way I can describe it to you is that Cannabis makes me feel like I've taken Acid and am having a bad trip. That's one, two, three pulls on a joint and it affects me this way. I literally can't touch the stuff anymore.

I know that it's a small minority of people who experience cannabis psychosis, and I have a theory that it happens much more regularly to people who start smoking weed before or during the beginning of puberty. Maybe a predisposition to mental health problems is part of it too.

But, I'll reiterate... I have no problem with people who smoke or ingest weed if it is having that good effect it used to have on me lol
Also, I know there are many health benefits as well. I tried CBD a while ago but it literally made me feel nothing. No help with sleep, anxiety or any of the things it is meant to help with.

I honestly think I overdid it much too much and too young.

Thanks though for thinking of me. I genuinely appreciate the suggestion 👍

That’s a shame man, I’m sorry to hear that. I had a feeling that might have been the case, I had a couple of friends who that has happened to, it’s tough cuz it really is “instant and in the same room” such a shame I’m sure you’d love to hang out with your pals who enjoy herbs n all that! But you are on your own journey in life right now and only through creating the right causes and conditions will the next step in life be comfortable and easy flowing for you :)
I hope you find something that works for you man! it is hard because what’s been done to us may take as long to undo as it has been done, so keep up the mindfulness and meditation etc,
And please 🙏 any mindfulness questions or queries let me know :)
I have a qualification in mindfulness and have studied and practiced Buddhism for a good few years now,
So I’m more than happy to help.
You are welcome.
I hope you’re having a good week ;)
