Hive open Mic week 156 - Where is My Mind (The Pixies) - Cover

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

I was inspired by the prompt for this week's Hive Open Mic "Hasta El Extremo" to cover The Pixies song 'Where is My Mind' as I explained in the video it seemed to fit nicely with the two translations I could find into English of 'To The Extreme' or 'To The End'.

I always remember the scene at the end of Fight Club where the buildings are blowing up all around while the character’s Tyler Durden and Marla Singer sit and watch from the top of a nearby skyscraper. Where is My Mind is playing in the background and as the financial system collapses along with half of the major corporations in a America, I realised that this film spoke to a lot of the hidden mechanisms of power that keep patterns of control alive in this world.

For those who don't know the movie or ending I'm talking about here is a version of the ending I found on YouTube:

The Pixies 'Where is my Mind' does seem to encapsulate the theme that author Chuck Palahniuk sets out in Fight Club. For me it expresses the prompt "Hasta El Extremo" in its translation 'To The Extreme' as the whole point of the movie is one man's splitting of personality and fracturing of societal conditioning, building a cult-like following who finally take down the major institutions of the American state.

It is an anarchists dream written expertly, to the extreme, with skill and pathos.

I am a massive fan of Chuck Palahniuk as an author and highly recommend his other books, especially Choke and Survivor both of which are stand out for me, but not for the faint of heart.

Thanks for reading and listening to my version of 'Where is my Mind'.

Ha ha, yeah thanks.
I do love this song in particular, but many other pixies tunes are great. I remember having the albumn bossanova on my skateboarding playlist, they were a great band to cruise to and also to gee you up to try a set of stairs or rail or something.

I came to know them a little late in life (and well after the band had already split) when I went to Uni in the mid 2000's and have many good memories going to clubs and pixies tunes would come on. Less good memories slamming hard while skatebaoarding with the pixies blasting in my ears 😂

Ahhh, what I wouldn't give to be young and able to consume my own body wieght in alcohol again, and also smash myself up kickflipping down stairs with little concenquence, or maybe I was just mental and forgot the pain.

I found Bossanova a little patchy but 'Rock Music' is pure anarchy, noise and great!

Great cover and movie. We can only hope the control grid falls like this. Lol.

It certainly is a great movie, and I have to admit that was what I felt when I watched Fight Club.

I thought, what would it be like if all those controlling forces were taken down in one fell swoop. Mr Robot is a series that gives that similar feeling.

Glad you enjoyed the cover mypathtofire

Wow! I wish I could play the guitar like that but for now I keep strumming along on my ukulele. I'm far from ready for open mic but I won't say never either.

Love the pixies and this is surely one of my favorites, if not my favorite, song by them. Great cover!

Hi Vincent

Nice to see you still on hive m8 🙂
Ahhh, the guitar playing... thank you for the compliment. I've played for over 20 years, but I haven't kept up my practice like I used to when I was a teenager. I used to be a lot better, but this tune is one that I played at least once a month, even during those years when I didn't practice much. I really love this tune, it sends shivers up my spine each time, and I love the trippy-ness of 'Where is My Mind' 😜🤣

But it is kinda like riding a bike when you learn guitar as a kid or teenager.

My girlfriend plays the ukulele in a Uke group. I'm sure you'll get to where you feel comfortable playing in the open mic at some point m8. It's just a matter of confidence often. Also, moving from Uke to guitar, or vice versa, is a natural progression. Chords are just in different places lol

Thanks for stopping by to check out my digital busking @vincentnijman 👍

Thanks @jesus-son

The greatest compliment a guitarist can get is to be told they rock 🤘

We are very attracted to this movie, without a doubt we have to see it.
How nice to see you here again, sharing your magnificent art and giving us a lot to learn, your voice is fresh.
No doubt everyone in life can do something out of the ordinary or take it to the extreme, but it is always good to realize that we are imperfect human beings and we can always start over.
We love how you projected the theme and your version, we hope to see you also appreciate the work of others, we are sure they will be pleased with it, your talent is inspiring!

We hope to see you more often! hugs!

No doubt everyone in life can do something out of the ordinary or take it to the extreme, but it is always good to realize that we are imperfect human beings and we can always start over.

This is so true, sometimes great things can come from mistakes learned. Someone once told me, that a mistake is just an opportunity to learn. I can't remember where I heard that now I think of it, but your insightful comment inspired the -half-memory of it.

Thanks for that, and for checking out my rendition of 'Where is my Mind'.
And you should definitely watch 'Fight Club', one of the best movies ever IMO.

P.s. I shall be sure to check out some other artists in the open mic this week, and comment today or tomorrow 👍

Yeah @stickupcurator, I agree this tune is indelibly linked with Fight Club for me too now. That ending was iconic, and the movie in general just came out of nowhere for me, as the first thing I'd seen during that period of time, for years from Hollywood with some real fckn balls to it lol

Ha ha, and the effect in the chorus. I'm glad it caught you off guard, I've been experimenting with Da Vinci video editor and it is pretty decent. I've always thought 'Where is my Mind' is a pretty trippy song, all that stuff about the little fish

"Except the little fish
Bump into me, swear he's
Tryin' a talk to me, say wait wait
Where is my mind?"

😂 I never understood that line until I first took up scuba diving 😉

Anyway, I thought I'd make the chorus trippy to fit in with the feel of the song 🙂

Thanks for checking out my rendition of 'Where is my Mind'.
