Altered States of Poetry

In Liverpool, on every first Tuesday of the month at Ma Boyles (a central pub and eatery) poets gather for one of Liverpool's best, most well-known open mic nights, Liverbards.

Organized, and compared by Ali Harwood, I was honoured to be offered the headliner set for the Month of May 2023 which I have videoed and edited entitled - Altered States of Poetry.

My set included eight poems I read out and a creative collaboration of music and poetry between myself and @nickyhavey which included the Poem 'Engulfed in Sonder' mixed cleverly into a Drum'n Bass track .

Nicky Havey's music can be found on YouTube under that name on this link.

Nicky Havey's music is on the following sites:

Beatport - https://www.beatport.com/artist/nicky-havey/480860/tracks

YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@NickyHavey

Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/artist/71fCU3XxNavTx2w7tA9AZx?si=ZkiTUH5lRbCnFZkMzY58sw

Apple Music - https://music.apple.com/gb/artist/nicky-havey/516238029

The word Sonder is a neologism, which means a word that expresses a feeling that has no traditional word attached to it, I believe from my research it comes from a German word, in this case the meaning of "sonder"is:

The realization that each random passer-by is living a life as vivid and complex as your own populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness

And his version of the track can be found here: Drum & Bass | Nicky Havey & Mainly Poetry - Engulfed in Sonder.

This track, Engulfed in Sonder experienced some technical difficulties on the night, but through the magic of video editing, I created it as I meant to perform it (the track starts at around 16.35 mins) and played out the session with the Drum'n'bass vibes I wanted.

Here is a full list of timestamps which is also included in the YouTube drop-down description:

Creative collaboration on the Hive Blockchain

For the last month, I have been sitting on the recording (posted above 🔼) of my first full headliner poetry set. This basically means the night is billed and promoted with my 15-20 minute performance at the centre stage of a performance poetry event, with an open mic for other poets to read out their poetry in 5 minute slots. I waited with bated breath as @nickyhavey organised getting a creative collaboration of a Drum'n'bass song he'd made, which features my poem, Engulfed in Sonder ready for distribution through his label and various media outlets.

It has been a dream of mine to feature some of my poetry alongside some decent electronic music for as long as I have been writing (over 25 years), and now thanks to @nickyhavey my work will be out there paired with music. The icing on the cake is that it's Drum'n'Bass music, which has long been my favourite type of Electronic dance music (EDM). This achievement marks something I've wanted to make happen for a long time.

Thanks for helping make this happen Nicky 🙂

The Importance of Creative collaboration & Grassroots Promotion of Hive

Creative collaborations used to be much more the norm on Steem/Hive, as I have made a few in the past including a multi-post poetic/photographic adventure with @soyrosa 🎉

https://peakd.com/poetry/@raj808/the-dereliction-of-time-poetry-photography-collaboration-by-raj808-and-soyrosa

https://peakd.com/poetry/@raj808/life-through-the-window-pane-ekphrastic-poem

These three poems, from 2018 were inspired by Soyrosa's photography and number among some of my best poetic works, especially 'The Dereliction of Time', which brings me to my next point. These types of creative collaborations used to happen on here a lot more, and in many cases were exhibited (as with my poem Engulfed in Sonder) outside of Hive.

HeadlinerFlyer.jpg

I created edited flyers for the event, using a template Ali had already made and placed these on everyone's table promoting hive and inviting poets to join the 'Blockchain Poets' community.

This type of Grassroots promotion used to go on all the time with art exhibitions, musical artist collaborations and as I remember it a hive user called tibfox who was planning on making a short film, and asked out in the hive community for creative artists to provide either scripts or short stories they'd be happy to turn into scripts for his project.

To cut it short and not get too preachy, I simply think that the Grassroots promotion that the creative professionals of Hive have done is often undervalued, or even unnoticed.

Which is a shame.

Check out @nickyhavey post announcing their release of the track 'Englulfed in Sonder' on their hive blog on this link:

Thanks for reading/listening 🙂🌿

I would like to give a big shout-out to @stickupcurator (and @stickupboys) for their amazing contribution to supporting music, art and all things creative on hive. If you haven't already, you should go check out their account for music, crypto podcasts and much much more 🙂👍

I will also be sending 50% of all liquid stake made on this post to @nickyhavey as a partner in this creative collaboration. 😄

Congrats on the gig. I love seeing Hivers collaborating and you guys made something cool.

Also extra credit for publicising Hive. Did anyone ask about it?

Thanks @steevc I'm glad you enjoyed the performance.

Yeah, it was a long process actually to get this creative collaboration together... but worth it in the end 🙂

I exchanged emails with 8 people who asked about Hive. So far, no one has got back to me as I have plenty of account creation tickets left over from when I was a dolphin. But sometimes it is a slow-grower bringing creative types to new ideas as they have very hectic lives, I know I have.

I know it takes time to get people into it and they are all busy. Starting from scratch on a new platform is hard, but easier if you know some people. We need to build communities based on those in 'real life'.

If/When anybody gets back to me that is why I will guide them to the C/Blockchain Poets community where I published this as @dbooster has a 'two for one rule' - make two comments on other poems for each post you put up, which I honestly think is a great way to push people to engage and build real relationships etc.

Anyway, we shall see how it goes as I am performing at other poetry nights round the city and will be playing the creative collaboration 'Engulfed in Sonder' as either a walk on, or walk off in al of them. I've got the final stanza memorized so I basically start repeating those final words as it finishes. It's something I've not seen done before tbh.

Glad our collab inspired you to write a poem you still see as some of your best work! It was such a fun thing to do together. I really hope I can dive into creating more for Hive in the future <3

Hi Rosa. Sorry for flying in the face of hive-etiquette and tagging you in this post, but those collaborations I've done... with yourself, a few others back in the day who were in the sandbox incubation team, and this one with @nickyhavey, are some of the best experiences I've had on hive.

I'm now in corresponding with an old university friend (who also did single honours creative writing at the same time as me) and we're creating character sketches, to turn into comedy scrips to pitch to the BBC and other TV channels. But it was Hive that taught me the power of creative collaborations 🙂

She already has a literary agent, but I suspect if what we're writing is as funny as we find it, I might get snapped up by that agent as well... and maybe I shall be writing (for a liveable salary) soon-ish 🙂

But I shall never forget those Halcion days when so much creativity flowed through Steem/Hive back in the day.

I hope you're well?

I remember last time we spoke @soyrosa you said you'd discovered a dietary regime that improved your chronic illness. I hope this has lasted for you, and you're fit, healthy and living a happy life with less struggle 🙂🌿

Yes mate! Loved working on this one with you! Epic video of the event as it happened live with some cunning video editing to offset the technical issues encountered on the evening! More mic drop MC Rowan bass boom moments please 😃

Epic video of the event as it happened live with some cunning video editing to offset the technical issues encountered on the evening!

Yep, I can't deny that I was only able to play half the track on the night before the PA system seemed to fck up for no apparent reason. so I read out the poem 'Engulfed in Sonder' anyway, but I was sorely disappointed on the night and had words with the sound guy (what music tech doesn't even bother bringing his laptop to a gig 😡) I'd seen he had the full set up on other poetry nights.

Anyway, that's just the way the cookie crumbles I guess, and I'll be playing this poem and reciting the final 2 stanzas at poetry at FACT cinema and art gallery soon, and also Ali who runs Liverbards was so apologetic and promised to Give me a few extra minutes at the next Liverbard's night to play the track and read out the final parts as I intended on the night 🙂

In the meanwhile, I had to use video editing wizardry to create the effect that I intended for the night.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out the set.
Just as an idea, listen to 4th track I read out 'about a goddess going on holiday':

It's featured @ 10.25 minutes, entitled, Dionysus' Sojourn (Poem)

I think that if I re-read this to a 150 or 180 BPM rhythm it might be a potential for a further collaboration. Let me know what you think @nickyhavey ?

Thanks Aishlinn (@trucklife-family) 🙂

Yeah, it was a long process actually to get this creative collaboration together... but worth it, in the end, I think (always a bit self-deprecating when it comes to my writing as it keeps me from being complacent) 😂🙂

In all seriousness though, both I and Nicky were very happy with the track (happy enough to spend £20 each to get the track mastered by a professional sound technician in a studio).

I was blown away by the musical part which @nickyhavey made, it fitted in with the poem perfectly but actually, the music changed the whole atmosphere of the poem, as the YouTube/3Speak version I made years ago had a much more melancholic vibe.

Anyway, I'll stop ranting 😂

Thank you for taking a look at my poetry headliner gig, which poem was your favourite btw?

I'd love to know 🙂🌾

I hope you and your fambo are doing well.
