There was a week of warm and sunny days, weather kissed me; summer in full scale always makes me want to listen to ska, fire-fuelled latino and klezmer tunes. So, one more #ttt issue about Balkan beats. I pick up three songs from quite different artists: Shantel, OMFO, Amsterdam klezmer band. Hope you enjoy the tunes and maybe learn some cool new names.

Shantel vs Baba Zula - Kisaltmalar (Limoncu remix)

(Bukovina club, 2008)

Cant say much about this track. Shantel is a renowned German music producer who has produced and remixed a lot of gypsy music into modern-sounding dancehall hits. I hadn't heard this remix before, it sounds really pleasurable!

OMFO - Magic Mamaliga

(unofficial video; from 'Borat' OST)

Many folks were charmed with this tune after watching the said movie. Actually I did not watch it - stumbled upon this track at some compilation. The artist stayed unknown for me, and his other tracks did not impress me. But this one is really outstanding and fire-fuelled one! A dance-floor bomb. Oh by the way; 'mamalyga' is another name for a tasteless porridge made from corn. At this point, the romantic haze around the song is completely destroyed, isn't it? lol.

Amsterdam klezmer band - Bigoudi

(from 'Blitzmash' LP, 2014)

I payed some attention to this band back in 2000-es but frankly speaking was not keeping an eye on their new releases. Suddenly a few days ago I discovered this track from 2014 - one cant say it is 'new', just new to me. Funny thing is, the song itself is not original, it is completely utilizes the text of the certain poem... (I can't name its exact author - perhaps it is of traditional origin). One way or another, the text is so funny that I have to translate it for you from Russian into English.

The singer asks the question: why do decent folks have plain non-curly hair, while all sorts of bitches always wear beautiful curled hair? It turns out the point is that bitches spend solid money on curlers (aka 'bigoudi' - simple gadget that provides curlie effect to any straight hair), while decent folks never have money enough to obtain bigoudi cause, huh, they always have their money well-spent at bitches. Mystery resolved, and you may add this fun fact to your piggy bank. Apart from this mind-blowing information, the song does not claim for any outstanding musical features.

I love this selection! I love klezmer music, and once upon a time was a klezmer fiddle player. Thanks for posting. Love this.
