Three Tune Tuesday #195 .:. Suede (pt.1)
Greetings, Hiveans. 🤠 How do you feel about a piece of #britpop for today's #threetunetuesday? Welcome: SUEDE!
Suede (known is USA as the London Suede, due to legal issues) is among #britpop genre AAA bands, together with Blur, Oasis, Pulp etc. Not being a fan of this genre itself, I still appreciate a lot of this 90-es stuff which, er... which I listened to when my youth was ending and mutating into so-called adulthood. so there was a certain amount of imprinting and I'm probably being subjective. one way or another, but I value some Suede songs very highly, and I'll try to introduce you to them.
And I will start with the fact that (as the Smash Hits music critic Alex Needham called it): "The terrible truth is that Suede used to be brilliant until their old guitarist/tunesmith Bernard Butler left, and now they're just pleasantly average." I love the word tunesmith a lot, I love the person of Bernard Butler in all his instances, and.... damn. I hate watching their later music videos, where Butler is replaced by a new "handsome young boy" (he is a musical idiot). I hate this whole story so much. But I love the early era Suede LPs.
Suede - So Young
The song became fourth (and final) single from the bands debut LP released on 17 May 1993 on Nude Records, which charted at #22 at UK Singles Chart.
In this video you can see Bernard Butler is hugging his guitar - exactly like Jonny Greenwood ex Radiohead. Same-mindset-folks, might be?..
Suede's second LP named 'Dog man star' is a different story that I suggest to skip this time (it would take me a long separate post to review it). Let me just tell you - it was the band's best album, and - surprisingly - the band's 'swan song', as we found out later...
Suede - Beautiful Ones
This song became a top-10 hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at number eight. I loved it on its own, even before I stumbled upon the official video. And the video, for me personally, turned into a real bomb!
A luxurious, creative mix of irony and typography, with the search for words and things in the surrounding world (even though in this case it was just a trivial "la-la"). Totally my cup of tea! (I count this clip in the top 100 musical videos ever list).
Suede - Europe Is Our Playground
A great song and a nice appealing video (directed by Simon Gilbert, the band's drummer) containing some precious footage from the band early days.
I love its mood and can listen to this song on repeat, non-stop, for days.
...and one more I could not resist to add, as a bonus:
Suede - Have You Ever Been This Low?
In my opinion these are a rare exception to the overall rule 'They don't do it like that anymore! Lucky we. I hope you enjoyed today's music selection, and travelling around the globe without leaving the Hive. 😎 The post goes for Three Tune Tuesday challenge run by @ablaze. I didn't listen to this band in the 90s - didn't know or missed (sorry! lol) I'll give it a try. Thank you!
