Three Tune Tuesday #135 .:. Christmas songs

The Boxing Week is over, but here in Russia we are moving straight to the festive week, as we celebrate two dates: New Year on December 31 and Christmas on January 7. Thats why today's #ttt selection will be special. It contains the only artist, please welcome: Ritchie Blackmore! (well, with a little by-product, see below). This is my indispensable playlist every year for the festive Christmas mood.

Before I start, I want to share a little story. It happened more than 25 years ago... the times fly so fast! By the end of 97, I was on a visit to Moscow, heading to the central bookstore on Tverskaya ave; at some underground passage, having passed a kiosk, I suddenly heard the sounds of magical music. I stopped, sniffed the air scanned the space around, retraced my steps and attacked the saleswoman with a question: what was that??! what record was playing a minute ago?!!

It should be noted here that back then I was a big fan of Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson with his flute; I collected all the available records and listened to them up and down many times; no new records promised to appear, and of course like any fan I would like something fresh (or same as good old ones). So, while I walked at said underground passage, the purest Jethro Tull burst in my ears?! a new album that I knew nothing about? I was excited as ... no words can tell.

The saleswoman answered my question by handing me out a CD labeled «Blackmore's Night. Shadow of the Moon» - which told me almost nothing (as I already prepared to examine a new Jethro Tull release, haha!). Of course, I knew who Ritchie Blackmore was, but I had no idea what Blackmore's Night was. At first moment I gave up, but then my hands opened the wallet, I considered, since I liked the music, I’ll buy the disc - it deserves more attention. And when I returned home and carefully read all the small text printed on CD's back... (This CD, of course, was not a licensed edition, it was a pirate copy - thanks to the pirates for not losing or throwing away all the info!) I learned something that amused me so much. Yes, it turned out to be not Jethro Tull but Ritchie Blackmore, who switched to performing medieval music. But!!! to perform a fiery instrumental jig on the flute in the 'Play Minstrel Play' ballad...

...a session musician was invited - and it turned out to be none other than flutist and musical magician Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull - the best of the best men! Does this story teach you something?.. perhaps not... but it is a kind of illustration of how your thoughts shape the world, attract the staff and people you like to you.

Blackmore's Night + Ian Anderson - Play Minstrel Play

(from «Shadow of the Moon» LP, 1997)

Dont want to talk about this song - just listen to it, all is there. It is pure magic. There's a lot of authentic medieval instruments incorporated in the arrangement, like shepherd's horns, bagpipes and god knows what else? Combined with Candice Knight's soft, warm, enveloping, motherly voice this music turns into real gems.

Look how this music is being created live:

(live @ Paris, Sep 20, 2006)

Was extremely hard to make the second pick, as all the stuff is brilliant, of pretty same quality level. I love all of them pretty much. Well, after some consideration...

Blackmore's Night - Renaissance Faire

(from «Shadow of the Moon» LP; 1997)

Not much I want to add about this one; the song from the same LP, it has absorbed baroque musical elements in huge quantities, and became quintessential; every note immerses you in a romanticized past, reminiscences a beautiful historical picture. A festive music for the royal banquet hall.... playing from our headset.

Since then I kept my eye on Blackmore's Night future releases; his second album «Under a Violet Moon» had amazing tracks, digging further into the Renaissance music, but let me skip it, right to the third album «Winter Carols» (2006, which became one of my wife's faves. You may read more about the other Christmas songs included: I Saw Three Ships / Good King Wenceslas / We Three Kings / Ma-O-Tzur / Deck the Halls / God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen -- these are all traditional hits worth listening. I chose one of them for you to enjoy right now, right here. Merry Christmas!

Blackmore's Night - We Wish You A Merry Christmas

(from 'Winter Carols' LP; 2006)

This is another side of Richie Blackmore that I hadn't expected. I almost included him in my top 3 guitar solo rifts last week.

I do like some of the pubs at Christmas in his home county of Somerset where they dress up in the medieval drab. I wonder if they also play his music!

Richie is huge; maybe he is not my fave artist, not on daily basis definitely (there are so much great artists around! you cant stick to only one all the time, right?) but the fact he continued his musical travel into baroque direction, started to explore all these authentic musical instruments, old traditional songs - this means a lot. He deserves a greatest respect!
PS.
I'd love to sit and drink !BEER in such a bar, and listen to the music, so much!

!LOLZ I remember the pirate's CD, it seems like yesterday that I still bought that. I think it was after the 2000 that DVD/VCD players became more affordable here in my place.

Never heard these songs, before that they are pretty nice.

Yes, they became more affordable later, at some point I switched to licensed CD/DVDs too. But apparently around 2005 torrents/mp3s became a huge thing and changed the game - so that we became in no need for the actual discs... after 2015, I'd say, we dont need the actual files too - internet connection and streaming services are so convincing that most of the time it is easier to kick off the track from YT rather than search for the file in your mp3-s collection, !LOLZ

I am truly glad I have acquainted you with those gems. Believe me, 'Christmas carols' is the best of the best for Christmas festive mood (well, at least in the European tradition). Thanks for the !PIZZA, always appreciated, nyam-nyam. 🙏 Wish you a good year of 2024, and do nail all your goals at the blockchain. ❤️

This departure from hard rock by Richie Blackmore was really cool. I love the sound of the medieval music, and Knight has a beautiful voice... It works really well! I think most Blackmore fans were shocked, but it's a great creative departure. He's always been the type to leave bands over creative differences, and I think it really paid off here!

Thank you for the extra tokens, have a !PIZZA back. It is really great that I was not hardcore Blackmore's fan - acquaintance went pretty smoothly for me, I enjoy and relisten to this stuff much more, than to old DP albums. Hope nobody will throw stones at me, haha! 😜

I love Blackmore's Night! I have a couple of their albums kicking around that I ought to dig out again. Their version of We Wish You a Merry Christmas is epic!
