Forgotten 90s Hip Hop 12" Record Singles
Today I share some more recent record grips from the dustiest corners of the dollar bins! None of these were huge hits, to my knowledge....so let's give these little fellas another chance to shine!
DJ Magic Mike
"Back in Black"
1996
DJ Magic Mike is a legendary DJ in the Miami Bass music circuit, undoubtedly releasing many many albums, singles and mixtapes. Here is just a mid 90s rendition of the AC/DC standard, "Back in Black," complete with some nice cuts and several remixes. While researching his bio, I just found out that he is actually a cousin of DJ Scratch, of EPMD fame! He still does weekly appearances in Orlando to this day, assuming his Wikipedia bio is still accurate!
Saafir
"The Hit List"
1998
Saafir was a West Coast rapper, coming out of the 90s, known for being in the groups Digital Underground, Hobo Junction and later the Golden State Warriors, with Xzibit and Ras Kass. He also had some noteworthy collaborations with the Hieroglyphics crew members. His story gets rather sad, as he had bad back problems for most of his life due to being in a plane crash and he actually recently passed in November. The song I share here should be noted for being an early video game culture rap song, pre-dating even Del the Funkee Homosapiens "Proto Culture" by two years!
44 Max
"Political Frame-Up"
1991
Here is an early 90s group I was (and still am) rather unfamiliar with, apparently only releasing two albums and some singles to their name. Their sound lies in that Public Enemy/ NWA zone, complete with the obligatory B-Side on the dangers of crack cocaine. This video link has two tracks, the Political Frame-Up single, as well as the album track, "Rewind the Future."
Bigg Ocean Mobb and IV-1-5
"Ghetto Radio"
1990
Here's an early 90s group from the Bay Area that released one record and a couple of singles and then seemed to disappear. The '415' in the name comes from the California code for excessive noise.
I do spot samples from Cleveland soul group, S.O.U.L., doing their 60s tribute to ghetto life, which I will share at the end, as a bonus.
