With this post, I introduce myself to the community, bringing you the biography of singer Shannon Hoon, lead singer of the band Blind Melon. I love his songs, particularly "No Rain".
I'm going to share with you everything I know about him, based on what I've read and seen on a Blue Ray CD I own.
Richard Shannon Hoon, was born and raised in Lafayette, Indiana, on September 26, 1967.
He began using his middle name, Shannon, to avoid confusion with his father, who was also named Richard.
As a teenager, he made a difference with his remarkable athletic ability, excelling in soccer and wrestling. Some say it was because he was a hyperactive person. The truth is that he also stood out for obtaining good grades in his studies, graduating at the age of 17 from McCutcheon School in 1985.
At this same age, Shannon began to show a marked interest in music, which she needed because she felt she didn't identify with anything. He realized that he had wasted many years trying to be what his parents wanted him to be, trying to please them, but feeling great frustration, because it was not what he wanted.
From there, his behavior changed. He began to become known in his community for having been arrested on more than one occasion, for misdemeanors. He joined a cover band of the famous band Guns N' Roses.
After this, he joined the band Styff Kytten and wrote his first song "Change".
Soon after he decided to leave Indiana because of his problems with the law and moved to Los Angeles with the desire to make it in the music world. In Los Angeles, Shannon met musicians Brad Smith and Rogers Stevens at a party, who saw him perform his song "Change" on acoustic and invited him to play with them. They soon formed the band Blind Melon, which also included Christopher Thorn and Glen Graham.
In 1991, the band produced a four-song demo entitled "The Goodfoot Workshop" and soon signed a $500,000 contract with Capitol Records, which represented a major career breakthrough. Shannon was achieving his dream, and Blind Melon began rehearsing at a venue called The Sleepy House in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

In 1994, during the band's appearance at the Woodstock festival, Shannon went on stage in his wife's wedding dress, wearing makeup and with women's hair clips in his hair. At this concert, Shannon interacted a lot with the audience, but ended the show by throwing musical instruments into the audience.
That same year, Shannon was the protagonist of another incident when he assaulted a security guard during the Billboard Awards. In July 1995, shortly before the release of her second single, Shannon Hoon's daughter Nico Blue was born. The album was not well received by the critics, but it reached the 7th place on the Billboard chart.
Soon after, Shannon decided to check into a rehab center to treat his cocaine addiction. But the band needed to do a promotional tour for the album "Soup" and the pressure from the record label was such that Shannon had to attend the tour, but with the company of a guardian.
However, the tutor was unable to control Shannon or prevent him from relapsing into his addiction. He was fired just a month into the tour. With the guardian gone, Shannon's addiction and drug use grew too much.
A week after firing the guardian, on the night of October 20, 1995 and after a concert to forget in Houston, Texas, Shannon used a lot of cocaine during the drive from Houston to New Orleans; that night where he called his girlfriend on the phone.
The next morning, on October 21, 1995, the band's soundman went looking for Shannon to do the sound check, but found his lifeless body in the band's bus. He was only 28 years old.
That day, they had a concert in New Orleans, which was obviously cancelled, as well as the rest of the tour. Richard Shannon Hoon was buried in Dayton, Indiana.
I remember when the news of his passing was released, it made me want to cry. I was a fan of his and besides that he is the stereotype of the man I like.
