Volunteering At The Right Place, At The Right Time.
Volunteering to offer a certain service to people or animal takes a lot of kindness. I see some online and I'll be like, wait these guys are really doing all these things for free ?: the walking about, speaking to strangers, carrying stuffs, etc. doing these for hours without been paid is nothing short of a good heart and kind heart. I have never participated in the kind of voluntary services like those, the introvert lifestyle I live has not allowed me to seize opportunity that would make that possible. I really want to, to be a part of a program that just want to make lives better, easier and lovely. I have a friend who is a member of several voluntary organizations and he does a lot, he posts their activities online and I envy him a lot. I had to message him late last year that I would love to be a part of any of the program, he sent a link where I filled many informations, though I am yet to get a response.
The only kind of voluntary service I had a chance to be part of was a religious one, a program to gather youths in the university and preach to them, worship together. I didn't even plan it neither would I have believed it if I was told I was going to be a part of it that very day. One of my guys who is a pianist in my church told me he was going to play in a program happening in school area after the Sunday service. I contemplated for long if I should go or not: he had told me about how much they have rehearsed and how it's going to be that very day, it sounded like something I should at least see. I also knew it would be an opportunity to connect with musicians that would be playing at the program. I had had not still decided when I left church with my friend who was going for a program. We got to the second car park to take different bike when I just suddenly said to him that I will follow him to the program, so we took same bike to the venue.
We got there and they had begun sound check, some media guys were setting up their equipments, vocalist were getting ready. All I planned to do there was to watch and listen to the musicians as they sound check, connect with them and leave at the beginning of the program. It was almost time to start, all departments were all set but the musicians had not seen their bass guitar player: his number wasn't going through and he wasn't online either. I really wanted to know the bassist so I waited a bit longer, but he didn't show up. I am a bass guitar player in my church so I said I would just sound check the bass while they wait for the main bass player, it was a brand new bass guitar with new shiny silver strings on it. I tuned the strings and set the bass guitar ready to be played for the service. At this time, the service had started and I had to play throughout the begining of the program. I was still planning not to wait till the end hoping the main bass player might show up, well he never did.
I had to stand in as the bass player for the program and I wouldn't lie, it was an awesome one. I could not hide my joy as I played along with other musicians, luckily I had nothing to do at home so I stayed till the very end of the program. One of the things that made me it an awesome time was because I didn't just fill in for the other guy, my impact was felt, you'd understand if you can identify the sound of a bass guitar and nod to the cool low end frequencies notes coming from it. I already knew the whole team was not been paid, everyone volunteered to make it happen, so I wasn't expecting any thing: but, I was a little surprised, the host had prepared packed food and drinks for us, even the guys didn't know about it. I exchange contact with the musicians there and and the usual conversations between musicians, waved each other good byes and I left for my hostel by past 8pm.
