Kisses for Leonard
The man with the baritone
Leonard was his name
spoke of a love, an existence
but a thousand kisses deep
A searcher, he’d traverse
thick spans of land and ocean
time and death
grasping at
an ever-slippery spiritual collusion
He augured with his kisses
going deeper with every embrace
perhaps on the lips of another
he’d taste everlasting bliss
A swimmer who knew he’d drown
closing his eyes to the oncoming waves
he’d ride each and every swell
the solace of land, another ocean away
His journey has but stalled
a million more kisses to go
to tunnel from dark to light
to reach the elusive core
Leonard, just like with kissing
you should never swim alone
I offer up a stroke or two
a scratch at the dirt
may we all find our way home
Yesterday I posted a poem in honour of Gordon Downie and thought I'd follow up today with one I wrote for Leonard Cohen, another find poetic scrivener from Canada. Thus the kisses part of the title and now onto the bliss part.
I have been fan of the Starbucks Cranberry Bliss Bars. Either my preferences are changing or they have changed the recipe or changed the quality of ingredients, because I haven't found much to be blissed out in recent years. They used to have more spice, fruit, and white chocolate or least that was the way I remembered them. In recent years, I have found them too sweet, almost granulated in texture. So this year, I attempted my own sugar, grain free version.
I was baking without a recipe, and so it ended up more like a bliss pie, but a yummy reminiscent of bliss bars of yesteryears. I still remember that first bite. If you are very observant, you'll note a think layer of dark chocolate, not found in the original. Let me tell you with a cup of Verona, it works.
The thing about not quite getting it right but still tasty, it means I get to keep trying. I used ground chaffles with an extra egg for the pie crust. I'll do the same the next time but add some dried fruit and let it sit in the fridge for a day or so to approach fruit cake without getting quite there ... because that would be gross. And of course add the secret ingredient ... look and you might be able to figure it out. The topping was delish but I went a little heavy on the cream cheese. So stay tuned for Cranberry Bliss Pie 2.0.
Yummy pie! Love to have one or two! Must learn to make bakery!
Baking is good for the soul.
Beautiful tribute to Leonard. He made the world a richer place.
He sure did. Everything about him was deep:)
Super!
