Hard Edge Art and Orchids Under Hard Light
I do love my flowers, but it can be a challenge to finds some good shots, or a variety of floral shots in the winter and early Spring up here north of the border. My solution is too visit floral shops. Botany via capitalism is always looking to deliver some new varieties. I am not likely to buy and more likely to capture some illicit images. How 'bout these orchids. Talk about the candid close-ups. A lack of wind helps too. The light is hard but the image easily gained.
We are facing a bout of extended rain. No sun in sight. So yesterday, looking for some indoor activity, we headed to the Vancouver Art Gallery. On Sundays they also offer a hands-on art activity.
The Gallery is currently featuring works from its permanent collection, titled Hard Edge.
The exhibits showcases graphic works from the 1960's and 70's. The works of Jack Bush, Roy Kiyooka, Guido Molinari, Frank Stella, Takao Tanabe and Joan Balzar are included.
From the point of view of craft and originality, the works are underwhelming. Many of us could do that but that said, the energy of the showing is electric. The bright colours and the eponymous hard edges will definitely lift your spirits and leave the art-enthusiast feeling better than when they entered. Fun and youthful despite the age of the canvasses.
Like I said, on Sundays, the gallery offers its visitors an opportunity to recreate, or be inspired, by the works hanging on its walls and standing in its corridors. They offered up some water-colours, stencils, paper, and painting tape and told us to do our best. Generally, they hold the make art workshops on the ground floor, but they'd moved this one up to the fourth floor, a good choice on a grey day. Much better lighting and feel.
(Hard edge works is a mess in progress.)
We were allowed two pieces of water-color paper. I went for two pieces of diagonally cut, the idea is that they would fit together. The plan was a stylized sun using the start and end of the color spectrum, deconstructed circles and triangles. Minime took just one piece of canvas and stuck to his choice, despite my imploring that he take two. We sat down at our work station and rather than reaching for a paint brush, he instead grabbed the scissor.
"What are doing?" I exclaimed.
"There are no mistakes in art, Mom," he returned. And he was right.
Minime's finished work.
Our works together with some environmental hard edges of the heat vents.
