Balance the Biodome
It looks like we are going to have another cold and rainy spring. Last year, the temperature didn't stay consistently mild until the end of June. Winter held on like a pair stilettos on black ice.
The climate did balance it out. We got a very long and mild summer, well into October. My preference really, and we avoided the smoky skies of a long hot, dry summer. Perhaps we are looking at a repeat of last year.
Just hold one, right. Eventually the air will warm and the flowers bloom in full force. Just not today, or this week, and probably not next week either. The seasons have shifted and September is the new July.
So you may ask ... how is it that I am able to offer mid-even late-summer hydrangea for our HIVE viewing pleasure. Did I go into the back log. Am I recycling. Nope. These are new shots, courtesy of an hour-long trip to the tropics. A wasteful flight. Again ..
I took the bus and walked the last bit.
Bloedel Conservatory, in addition, to a healthy number of tropical blooms had some very lovely hydrangea. There were the beautiful pastel hues usually found in June, and even some of the later rosy hues of August and September. Hydrangeas really are the every season flower.
Eureka. I've solved my issue. I will move into a bio-dome, and then I can control the weather. Not a bad idea, as long as you get the balance right.
Growin' up in a biosphere
With no respect for bad weather
There's still roaches and ants in here
So resourceful and clever
If you lived in a terrarium, I bet you'd be real careful about the air quality and maintaining the topsoil. Everything would get recycled and resources used in a sustainable way. Maybe that is how we should start to think of this beautiful blue planet we live on. An amazing and quite small bio-dome in space. Kind of the truth of it really.
Minime and I are continuing to explore the tact taken by those who emphasize consumption over subsistence and sustainability.
The program we use had us look at the video below. I found it very dualistic. European bad versus indigenous ... always and completely good. I debriefed Minime by reframing it in terms of those living a traditional, closer to nature life, versus an urban, materialistic life, explaining that often you will find indigenous people living the first, but not always, and that those with a European background can also live closer to nature.
From our analysis of the video ...
How we see the world governs how we act. No two people have the same perspectives and opinions of the world. Where we come from and our cultural background shape our perspectives and opinions.
Exploring other cultures and multiple perspectives expands our view of the world and how we think. Expanding our knowledge and understanding of our differences and values helps us to come up with better ideas and solutions that help more people
The philosopher Hobbes saw the world as as one where humans compete with each other over land and resources. If you see the word as a very dangerous place, you will behave aggressive and defensive. You will battle your way through life. In this view, everything in ranked and individuals claim ownership over land and resources and even each other. The economy practiced is a market or a capitalist economy. Every thing has a price, and just about everything is for sale. Wealth and affluence is concentrated in the hands of a few. The health of the economy is based on an ever-growing gross domestic product(GDP). It is an economy based on endless consumption.
In many indigenous philosophies, we are all seen as connected to each other and nature. If you see the word as interconnected, beautiful, and safe, you will will behave kind and generously towards others and not just your family or those that you believe are like you.
Collaboration fosters environmental stewardship. If everyone is connected, than the land and resources belong to everyone and even future generations. Humans are an equal part of the natural whole.
Economies are decentralized, and when working well with enough resources, result in widespread affluence and equality. The health of the economy is based on the health of the whole and sustainability of the environment. It is an economy based on enoughness.
I think you can tell I am more of fan of enoughness. That said the world must evolve. We want to take the best of modernity without losing the value of a traditional, closer to nature life. The trick is getting the balance right.
Speaking of Depeche Mode ... enjoy this mix. It's good.
All these flowers looks so beautiful and amazing. I really like it.
Thank you:)
