Movie Review: The Queen Who Crowns (2025)
Hello movie lovers π, I just finished watching all the episodes of this movie and I thought I really have to share my thoughts about it because it was so enjoyable not just because I'm a woman but because of the explicit showcase of the prowess of a queen and her ability to be virtuous, supportive and courageous all at the same time. This movie doesn't only have to do with the acting but the storyline is so mind blowing.
The Queen who Crowns was premiered on January 6, 2025 staring Cha Joo-young and Lee Hyun-wook as the main characters of the movie, they acted as the queen and king respectively. Their acting was second to none,I was so glued to my screen throughout the movie that I forgot myself. The showcase of emotions, passion, fury, envy, judgement, love and pain was really mind blowing I must confess. The Queen was the true hero of the movie I must confess.
PLOT
The storyline of the movie was inspired by the historical record of Prince Yi Bang-won, who staged a coup and later became King Taejong. It all started when two ambitious lovers of great background, one was royal prince and the lady was from a powerful family in the land. They teamed up together as a strong woman backing up her husband to set up a coup and take over the throne. Their love story however started having faults when the king and the queen were crowned and the people started referencing the woman as the king who without her support the king won't have won the coup. The king started feeling jealous and this birthed a lot of catastrophe between them, affecting their families and even their health. The king was always hurting and betraying the queen by marrying other women including her close maids, reducing the wealth of the queen's family, killing the queen's brothers etc, all because he was jealous of her prowess and sound ability to strategize solutions in the midst of problems. The king wanted all the glory, power and abilities to himself alone so he envied the queen and tortured her emotions until she was dry enough.
However, in the midst of everything the king did, the queen was still supporting the king, guiding the throne for him from outer enemies, supporting the princes and guarding them to succeed their father in the midst of her pain and agony. She still loved the king and honoured him secretly and publicly.
When the king later realised his mistakes and wanted to love and appreciate the queen for everything she had done for him, it was too late for him as the queen has a diseases that can't be cured and this lead to her death.
REVIEW AND RATINGS
I really enjoyed the way the casts especially the main actors, they really did a great job acting their roles. The movie ancient settings, their outfits and behaviour really depicts their various roles and I must commend them for that. The painful scenes actually made me cry and I love their public display of love, even the king the way he acted in his old age because of the boil he had was very funny and commendable by me
No matter how good the movie was, was still some short comings I would like to state:
I do not commend the naked scenes of the movie where they had to show us how they had sex, made love, took their births and all wasn't actually necessary to me. I think no matter the role Korean movies are always mindful of their nakedness but this movie show us another side entirely. I also didn't like the fact that the king had to go to the extent of killing the queen's brothers, it was so extreme for me. The change in time for young age to old age wasn't really stated and it happened all of a sudden, at least there should be something to let us now the transition in seasons and times
However the short comings, I will still be rating this movie 7 out of 10
