My Grandfather's Clock - A moving song about a clock in sync with a grandfather's whole life

The song
My Grandfather's Clock is a song written in 1876 by Henry Clay Work,
The song, told from a grandchild's point of view, is about
a clock bought on the morning of a grandfather's birth and works perfectly for 90 years,
The clock seems to know the good and bad events in the grandfather's life; it rings 24 chimes when the grandfather brings his bride into his house, and near his death it rings an alarm, which the family recognizes to mean that the grandfather is near death and gathers by his bed. After the grandfather dies, the clock stops, and never works again. Johnny Cash made a great version of this song and I hope i have done it justice

Here are the lyrics:
My grandfather's clock was too large for the shelf
So it stood ninety years on the floor
It was taller by half than the old man himself
Though it weighed not a pennyweight more
It was bought on the morn of the day that he was born
And was always his treasure and pride
But it stopped, short never to go again
When the old man died
Ninety years without slumbering
His life seconds numbering
It stopped, short never to go again
When the old man died
My grandfather said that of those he could hire
Not a servant so faithful he found
For it wasted no time and had but one desire
At the close of each week to be wound
And it kept in its place, not a frown upon its face
And its hands never hung by its side
But it stopped short, never to go again
When the old man died
It rang and alarmed in the dead of the night
An alarm that for years had been dumb
And we knew that his spirit was pluming for flight
That his hour for departure had come
Still the clock kept the time with a soft and muffled chime
As we silently stood by his side
But it stopped short, never to go again
When the old man died
Ninety years without slumbering
His life seconds numbering
It stopped short, never to go again
When the old man died

There's one I remember from my childhood, but I don't know whose version that was. It's great that some old songs get passed down the generations. They could certainly write a good one back then.

Tick tock....

This is such a wonderful song with its perfect combination of metaphor and narration. Always a favourite as it's one of the first songs I remember as a kid.
Perhaps like me, @steevc is thinking of the gentle and melancholic Burl Ives version which featured on an album of children's songs he released back in the day.

Great voice fella and great production. Best wishes.
