I recently got one of those surprises that brighten your day (and leave you thinking for a while). It turns out that Christopher Lee, yes, that same actor that many of us remember from The Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, also sang... rock metal! 🤘

And not only that: according to what I read, he once held the record of being the oldest metal singer in the world because he sang precisely the song that I was listening to when he had already turned 90 years old. Honestly, I didn't see it coming.👍

🎧 The discovery

While browsing a little, I came across a song called “Massacre Of The Saxons”, from the album Charlemagne: The Omens of Death (2013). And well… I gave it play without many expectations.

But what a surprise.

The song has a quite particular approach: it is as if Charlemagne was narrating the massacre of the Saxons in Verdun, all accompanied by quite powerful metal music. That is, history + metal + Christopher Lee… Unexpected combo!

And the best: sounds good. Pretty good, in fact.

🏰 An actor… with many lives

For me, Christopher Lee had always been that towering actor in many films over several decades, although in recent times he may be best remembered for two particular roles:

• Saruman in The Lord of the Rings

• Count Dooku in Star Wars

But of course, the man had a much more intense life than one imagines.

That famous anecdote always comes to mind during the filming of The Two Towers, in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The director was not convinced of what his scream sounded like when he was stabbed and asked him to repeat the scene several times.

Until Lee, already a little tired, said something like:

"Do you know what a man sounds like when he gets stabbed? Because I do."

That phrase… ugh. He has that air of someone who has experienced real things, possibly related to his military past (of which there is a lot of mystery). And yes, you feel that mix of experience, character, and an intimidating touch. All within the field of experience of a military veteran who has set foot in the field of war.

🤘 Bloody story 🩸… but good metal 🤘🎶

Back to the song: yes, the historical theme is quite raw. It's not exactly a light story. But even so, the way it is told, with that energy and theatricality, makes it very interesting.

I didn't expect to hear a British Sir singing epic metal about medieval massacres... but here we are 😅.

And the best: I enjoyed it quite a bit.

😲 Christopher Lee… ¿Cantando metal? Sí, y suena brutal.

Hace poco me llevé una de esas sorpresas que te alegran el día (y te dejan pensando un rato). Resulta que Christopher Lee, sí, ese mismo actor que muchos recordamos por El Señor de los Anillos o Star Wars, también cantaba… ¡Rock metal! 🤘

Y no solo eso: según leí, llegó a tener el récord de ser el cantante de metal más longevo del mundo, porque cantó justamente la canción que yo estaba escuchando cuando ya había cumplido sus 90 años de vida. Honestamente, no lo vi venir.

🎧 El descubrimiento

Curioseando un poco, me topé con una canción llamada “Massacre Of The Saxons”, del disco Charlemagne: The Omens of Death (2013). Y bueno… le di play sin muchas expectativas.

Pero vaya sorpresa.

La canción tiene un enfoque bastante particular: es como si Carlomagno estuviera narrando la masacre de los sajones en Verdún, todo acompañado de una base de metal bastante potente. O sea, historia + metal + Christopher Lee… ¡Combo inesperado!

Y lo mejor: suena bien. Bastante bien, de hecho.

🏰 Un actor… con muchas vidas

Para mí, Christopher Lee siempre había sido ese actor imponente de muchas películas durante varias décadas, aunque puede que en tiempos recientes se le recuerde más por dos papeles particulares:

• Saruman en El Señor de los Anillos

• Conde Dooku en Star Wars

Pero claro, el señor tenía una vida mucho más intensa de lo que uno imagina.

Siempre me viene a la mente esa famosa anécdota durante el rodaje de Las Dos Torres, en la trilogía de El Señor de los Anillos. El director no estaba convencido de cómo sonaba su grito al ser apuñalado, y le pidió repetir la escena varias veces.

Hasta que Lee, ya un poco cansado, le soltó algo como:

“¿Sabes cómo suena un hombre cuando lo apuñalan? Porque yo sí.”

Esa frase… uff. Tiene ese aire de alguien que ha vivido cosas reales, posiblemente relacionadas con su pasado militar (del cual hay bastante misterio). Y sí, se siente esa mezcla de experiencia, carácter y un toque intimidante. Todo dentro del campo de experiencia de un veterano militar que ha pisado campo de guerra.

🤘 Historia sangrienta… pero buen metal. 🤘

Volviendo a la canción: sí, el tema histórico es bastante crudo. No es precisamente una historia ligera. Pero aun así, la forma en que está contada, con esa energía y teatralidad, la hace muy interesante.

No esperaba escuchar a un Sir británico cantando metal épico sobre masacres medievales… pero aquí estamos 😅.

Y lo mejor: lo disfruté bastante.
