We are a group of hip hop and rap music producers based in Queens, New York. It is made up of two members, Juju and Psycho Les. The first is called Jerry Tineo and was born in December 1968. He is from the Dominican Republic and Psycho's original name is Les Lester Fernandez and he was born in Colombia in 1972. Originally part of the Kool Fashion trio, he later adopted the name. Al'Tariq, but he remained with the group for a short time to begin a solo career.

They were part of the Native Tongues collective, which also includes Jungle Brothers, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Common, Talib Kweli, J Dilla and Dj Red Alert. The Beatnuts member was the only South American member of the group. Although he was not the most influential member of the group, Q-Tip respected and supported them, and later collaborated with them on several songs.

Juju and Psycho Les grew up in different communities in Queens, New York (the former in Corona, the latter in Jackson Heights) and began performing and DJing at the age of 15 under the name Dj Les Jams. The two met at Flushing High School in Queens, where they met Afrika Bambaataa and were introduced to the Mother Tongue Collective. At this time they will improve their DJ work. They formed a duo and adopted the name Beat Kings, but chose the name The Beatnuts due to their comedic nature.

They entered the recording industry in 1990 and released several songs for the British electro dance group Stereo Mc's. They later laid the groundwork for other rappers such as Common, Pete Nice and Kurious, and in 1992, they were solely responsible for the release of rapper Chi-Ali's album, The Fabulous Chi-Ali. They remixed songs by MC Lyte, Da Lench Mob, Naughty by Nature or Jomanda and continued producing songs for the rappers who worked with them and specialized in the art of remixes.
