Krakow's churches no.8 – Basilica of Holy Trinity

I hadn't finished visiting churches in Krakow's Kazimierz district yet, and I already had a big dilemma as to what key to follow when choosing which temples to visit. Just like before, visiting subsequent districts more and more distant from my place of residence, or maybe choosing the most attractive ones and starting from them, ending with those not very attractive buildings erected only a few dozen years ago. I don't know, I still haven't found the key, so the further order is still unknown, but since the period of Lent has come in the liturgical calendar, and with it the season for Lent retreats has begun, it was for this purpose that I decided to visit my favorite temple in Krakow, the Church of St. Trinity, colloquially called the Dominicans, as it is the main seat of this order in Krakow. I most often went to the Dominican Monastery during my studies, when Father Adam Szustak, a popular YouTuber, was still conducting academic chaplaincy there. Moreover, the last unvisited church in Kazimierz is also the church of the Holy Trinity, but belonging to the Brothers Hospitallers.
The Dominicans appeared in Krakow thanks to Saint Hyacinth in 1222 and they came here from Bologna, Italy. Initially, their seat was located in a brick and wooden temple which, unfortunately, did not survive the Tartar invasion of 1241. The new temple, which was originally a three-nave hall, was rebuilt into a basilica church at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, the shape of which can still be admired in an almost identical form to this day. . The main difference is the lack of a characteristic bell tower which was located in front of the temple until 1850. Unfortunately, in 1850, a fire broke out, completely destroying the tower, and numerous fragments of the temple walls lost their load-bearing capacity and, as a result, had to be partially dismantled and partially reinforced to save the structure. Many years of reconstruction were completed in 1884 and the temples were then consecrated again.
The temple is full of historical monuments which can now be admired in the Dominican museum. The collections include, among others: portraits of bishops from the Dominican Order, paintings by Thomas Dolabella from the beginning of the 17th century, an alabaster Gothic sculpture of the Virgin Mary and Child, a reliquary for the head of St. Jacek, baroque liturgical paraments, decorative incunabula, old prints and even manuscripts from the 13th century.
In addition to the church at Stolarska 12, you can also admire the adjacent monastery with historic cloisters, numerous monuments, tombstones and epitaph plaques built into the walls. The cross-ribbed vault dates back to the 14th century, and the tombstones and epitaph plaques mostly date back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

Jeszcze nie skończyłem odwiedzania kościołów na Krakowskim Kazimierzu, a już miałem spory dylemat jakim kluczem kierować się przy wyborze kolejnych świątyń do odwiedzenia. Tak jak do tej pory odwiedzać kolejne dzielnice coraz bardziej odległe od mojego miejsca zamieszkania, czy może wybierać te najbardziej atrakcyjne i od nich zacząć, kończąc na tych niezbyt atrakcyjnych budowlach wzniesionych zaledwie kilkadziesiąt lat temu. Nie wiem, klucza nadal nie znalazłem, wiec dalsza kolejność wciąż pozostaje nieznana, ale że w kalendarzu liturgicznym nastał okres wielkiego postu, a wraz z nim rozpoczął się sezon na rekolekcje wielkopostne to właśnie w takim celu postanowiłem odwiedzić moją ulubiona krakowska świątynie, czyli Kościół Świętej Trójcy, potocznie nazywany Dominikanami, jako że to właśnie główna krakowska siedziba tego zakonu. Do Dominikanów najczęściej chodziłem w trakcie studiów, gdy jeszcze duszpasterstwo akademickie prowadził tam popularny obecnie youtuber ojciec Adam Szustak. Poza tym ostatni nie odwiedzony kościół na Kazimierzu to również kościół pod wezwaniem Świętej Trójcy, tyle że należący do Bonifratrów.
Dominikanie w Krakowie pojawili się za sprawą św Jacka w roku 1222 i przybyli oni tutaj z Włoskiej Bolonii. Początkowo ich siedziba mieściła się w murowano-drewnianej świątyni która niestety nie przetrwała najazdu Tatarów z roku 1241. Nowa świątynia, która pierwotnie była trójnawową halą na przełomie XIV i XV wieku została przebudowana na kościół bazylikowy, którego kształt w niemal identycznej formie możemy podziwiać do dzisiaj. Główną różnica jest brak charakterystycznej wieży dzwonniczej która do roku 1850 znajdowała się przed świątynią. Niestety w 1850 roku wybuchł pożar, który doszczętnie zniszczył wieżę, a liczne fragmenty murów świątyni utraciły swoją nośność i w efekcie celem ratowania konstrukcji musiały zostać częściowo rozebrane, oraz częściowo wzmocnione. Wieloletnia odbudowę zakończono w roku 1884 i wówczas świątynie ponownie konsekrowano.
Świątynia pełna jest historycznych zabytków które teraz można podziwiać w muzeum dominikanów. Zbiory obejmują m.in. portrety biskupów z zakonu dominikanów, obrazy Tomasza Dolabelli z początku XVII wieku, alabastrową gotycką rzeźbę Matka Boska z Dzieciątkiem, relikwiarz na głowę św. Jacka, barokowe paramenty liturgiczne, ozdobne inkunabuły, starodruki i nawet rękopisy z XIII wieku.
Poza kościołem pod adresem Stolarska 12 można podziwiać również przyległy klasztor z zabytkowymi krużgankami znajdują się w nich liczne pomniki, nagrobki i tablice epitafijne wmurowane w ściany. Krzyżowo-żebrowe sklepienie pochodzi z XIV wieku, a nagrobki i tablice epitafijne w większości z XVI i XVII wieku.
