TuneIn Brings Free Music, Podcasts, and Live Radio to Discord
TuneIn is bringing live radio, music, podcasts, and more to Discord as a new Activity to enhance listening experiences, especially between friends. This collaboration is a big step for the platforms, as the integration will bring expansion for both.
TuneIn is the world's leader in live audio with 75 million monthly active users, and Discord is a social media voice, video, and tech app that's great for friends to hang out with 200 million monthly active users.
Discord introduced Activities in 2022, but this new feature with TuneIn is the first audio-only Activity. It is also the first time TuneIn is integrating with a social media platform, and it will provide users access to 100,000 local AM/FM radio stations, news, podcasts, and sports content.
The audio-only Activity features a specially curated selection of music - covering genres like K-pop, Lofi, and Indie - news, podcasts, and sports from TuneIn for experiences on Discord only.
"People come to Discord to talk and hang out around their favourite games, and app partnerships like TuneIn give users even more fun things to do together," Kelly Liang, SVP of Partnerships at Discord, says. "We are excited to work with TuneIn to showcase the creativity of partners and developers who build on our API to make our platform even better."
We've seen some Discord bots provide audio services from streaming platforms like Spotify before, but they don't provide what TuneIn is bringing, like live radio and music, as well as the well-oiled integration of such a service.
Using it so far, it's actually impressive how you can now actually do things like "Watch Together" on YouTube with TuneIn in conversations with friends on Discord. Like Kelly Liang said, it gives users more things to do together. There are currently 23 Activities available.
What this means for both platforms is that TuneIn will now have a lot more users enjoying their devices, increasing their numbers, and Discord can have people spend more time on their app/software.
Discord users can now use the TuneIn Activity by clicking on the rocket icon in voice channels. They'll find TuneIn among the Activities available on Discord. And from there, they can explore the available listening experiences, like I was listening to classical music while I wrote this.
"We’re thrilled to bring TuneIn to the millions of people who use Discord daily to connect and build friendships through audio,” said Rich Stern, CEO of TuneIn. “This launch underscores our commitment to provide listeners with access to high-quality audio content wherever they are. To be the first audio partner of this kind on the platform is a testament to our continued investment in innovation to power listening experiences everywhere.”
And Stern adds that the company is open to more collaborations with other social media platforms.
“Our mission is to bring radio everywhere our listeners are, and that includes more partnerships with smart home devices, social platforms, and automotive manufacturers to power the in-vehicle entertainment experience," Stern continues.
I have found one more thing to love about Discord. I get more audio services on the platform, and I can also share that with friends and have it in the background in conversations with them.
