These early days of the year put Mind to remembering the slow climb of the roller coaster. The wooden ones. Before they were as “safe” as they are today. You were strapped in with a belt - not even as thick as the one’s that hold up your pants. Then they put this bar across your lap. It started with a jerk. Whiplash. There was this “clackity-clack” sound as a chain pulled you high into the sky. Then at the highest point — like a judo flip — there’s the drop. When you are in the first “car” you can’t see the tracks in front of you and it’s all trust that you are not going to drop into oblivion. It’s a shaky, twisting ride of 45 degree angles, jerky turns and for your boy — the one with the innate sense of doom — what if something breaks?
And then it’s over. For this vessel — everything inside is still moving when the underpaid and exploited carneys snatch you out of the car for that quick flip so the next twenty “victims” can be shaken up and scared to death. [Some of them love it and stand in line for hours.]
For yours truly that climb usually lasts until the Spring Equinox. The ascent into the heavens … then the fall. Then the wild ride. But we maintain.
