DnB, Safety Pins & Charging Ports

Well well well, I've been getting pretty vexed recently with bigger picture stuff, but all it took was a safety pin and a dusty charging port to bring a smile to my face today!

For the last few months, probably 6 or more, my phone charging cable kept pinging out and would only charge if I managed to get it in, like, the PERFECT position.

I've had this phone for about 7 years, it's served me well, traveled around the world with it and the phone itself works perfectly well. No way I'm forking out money to buy a new smartphone.

But that charging cable situation was starting to irk me so I did something I should have done many months ago - done a google search to see if anyone else had the same problem.

Lo and behold, there's a thread where people have recommended getting a pin/toothpick and really clean out the charging slot/port, like, DEEPLY.

So I got a safety pin and thought I'd give it a go, if nothing else, it might solve the problem, if not, I'd already accepted the worst.

First bit of digging around and there's an eruption of dust, dirt and fluff from the charging port and I was like, "What the actual f***"!!

There's probably 7 years worth of dust and fluffy crap that's accumulated, compacted over time with each charge up (i.e. daily) so I spent about 30 minutes cleaning this bad boy out with each poke around bringing out more fluff until I could see no more in there.

Then the moment of truth, will the charging cable work properly? Or have I just wasted time fishing out years of fluff?

Not only has the charging cable gone in, it's stayed in AND it's actually clicked in place like it used to!

Ahhh, I really should clean things more often, maybe annually at least lol. I won't be leaving it 7 years until the next clean anyway!

Let's celebrate this with some dnb :D

Haha, that sounds like a helluva lotta goop, but awesome you got it figured out. I suppose the phone is a bit before wireless charging, otherwise you could be lazy that way.

Haha! Oh yes, wireless charging isn't something that this phone has and I do enjoy the laziness side but I don't think that wireless charging is quite enough for me to splash out on a new phone yet! Now that I have sorted the cable port problem, I can ride this phone for another few years - I was so annoyed that I shut my other phone in a door and totally smashed the screen, it was flawless before that - had that one for about 5 years too lol

LoL that's quite a lot of crap buildup XD I'm hoping to not have quite that much as I use a wireless charging pad and have a fyn-proof case over my phone (which I do need to take off and clean because some crap has managed to get in as I do need to open the access hatch over the charging port every so often because sometimes I need to charge off my battery and offload photos to the small rig).

Could imagine you doing Eye of the Tiger or something while cleaning out the crap and then this as the victory music when everything started working again XD

Haha oh yes, it felt immense when the USB-C cable clicked in to place, felt like a boss!

It seems wireless charging is a newer technology with phones than the one I have. I am clearly missing out on the time saving to be had there! Although I now have the same problem as you with the phone case. The one I have is actually falling apart and not really serving its purpose as a cover any more :D

Unless your phone is prehistoric there will still be cases for it online somewhere XD
