Daily sound experiments - 17th March 2025
Sometimes an idea comes together quickly and since recording this and gathering these notes together, the project has evolved a bit more, so a follow-up post, or perhaps an edit is for definite.
Here is an overview of the whole project in AUM. I have written about AUM in the past, as an incredibly powerful app on iOS, it forms the basis of most projects.
Synthmaster 2 is like Serum for the iPad in my opinion, it’s an advanced synthesizer with a lot of features, I feel that I should give it a bigger write up in the fullness of time. It’s the main instrument for this project.
jAmp's latest app called Percussive, is a physical modelling drum synth and it is quite unique in it's own right because it just doesn't look like a regular drum machine and that for me is an instant win. It sounds very good too! I am running the demo version though, so quite comically the app cuts out from time to time which makes it sound like I was actually constructing musical phrases and rests - I wasn't!!
MidiStep by developer 4-pockets is hugely versatile, when it comes to sequencing... anything, be it synths, drums or whatever. Once again, deserves a deeper exploration at some point because there is a lot it can do.
The track features a mix bus, into which all other channels are fed. I always add a limiter here and sometimes also on other channels, this prevents any audio from spiking, or clipping. This protects my ears from damage, especially sudden unexpected loud noises, which can happen very easily when working with different instruments, some might be louder or an added effect my push things a bit too much. A good safety net to have in place.
Punchlab is an audio compressor, designed to give instrument tracks, especially drums, a little more presence in the mix. This is a favourite of mine.
Finally let’s have a listen to the piece. I have set this as private on Soundcloud, please let me know if it doesn't work. Come to think of it I should perhaps set it as public.

I have copied the link for this post and pasted into the track description on Soundcloud, in order to encourage people to visit the post on Hive and maybe join us here!
You have taught me much in this article. I am not a sound engineer, but I can see the process and catch some point here and there. Nice production though
Thank you for this informative article

Thanks, you are very welcome. I want to go into more detail on these tools and help promote iPad music making along the way.
