Battling the Bots: My Failed Attempt to Get Concert Tickets

Every parent knows that when your kid really wants to go to a concert, you’ll do just about anything to make it happen. So, when my daughter’s favorite artist announced a new tour, I made sure to do everything right this time: I joined the pre-sale list, updated all my account information, and logged in early to be ready when tickets went live.

Unfortunately, none of that mattered.

Despite following every step, I couldn’t get a single ticket. The site instantly showed long wait times, and within minutes, every show was marked “sold out.” It was deflating—especially after hearing so many others describe similar experiences over the past few years.

The Rise of the Bots

It’s no secret that ticket bots have made the concert-buying experience miserable for real fans. Even though major ticket platforms claim to use virtual queues and bot detection systems, it’s clear those protections aren’t working. Within minutes of the pre-sale ending, tens of thousands of tickets—many costing hundreds of dollars each—were gone.

And then, almost as quickly, they began popping up on resale sites for three times or more the original price. It’s infuriating to see, especially knowing that the people who truly want to be there—fans, parents, families—are getting locked out by automation and scalping software.

A Digital Age Problem Beyond Web3

I couldn’t help but notice the irony. I’ve seen bots and automation wreak havoc in Web3 economies and online marketplaces, but it’s wild to see the same problem persist in something as mainstream as concert tickets. Different technology, same issue: people gaming systems designed to be fair.

In the end, I didn’t buy any of the inflated resale tickets. I won’t support that kind of behavior or reward the scalping culture that’s taken over live events. My daughter will have to forgive me for missing this one, but hopefully, she’ll understand the principle behind it.

It’s sad that something as joyful as going to a concert has become a digital battleground between fans and bots. Until the ticketing industry finds a better way to ensure fairness, the experience will remain broken for those who just want to enjoy the music.

Maybe one day, technology will actually protect fans instead of working against them. But for now, I’ll take the loss—and keep my fingers crossed that next time, luck (and the queue) are on our side.
