Do you know the origin of the mandolin? 🎵 [ES/EN]
Después de mi primera taza de café a las 04:00 de la madrugada. Me puse a pensar en lo precioso que se escucha la interpretación del Pisa Peines en un instrumento cordófono como el que se suele interpretar en ésta región del país.
Luego de un par de segundos analizando ésta música noté que no sabía la procedencia de éste instrumento en particular...
¿De dónde viene la mandolina?.
Ésta duda surgió en mí porque no estoy tan familiarizado con la transcendencia de los instrumentos criollos que nos acompañan día a día en nuestro folclore.
Pero pensándolo bien, una mandolina no tiene nada parecido a un cuatro, un arpa o una maraca, claro comparte con las primeras dos opciones su estructura de cuerda pulsada. Pero...
Había algo que se me escapaba; recuerdo ver en algunas películas asiáticas algunos instrumentos parecidos a la mandolina. Luego también vino a mí un instrumento particular que también había conocido por algunas películas pero éstas eran americanas.
Éstos dos instrumentos son el Laúd y el Banjo, que son semejantes pero distintos. Indagando un poco no fue difícil reconocer que la mandolina es hija del Laúd instrumento árabe.
instrumento de cuerda pulsada, cuyo origen se remonta a la Edad Media y cuya introducción a Europa se dio por medio de la España islámica (Al-Ándalus). Fue muy utilizado entre los siglos XIV y XVIII, y ha resurgido en el siglo XX.
Entonces pensándolo un poco las cosas empiezan a conectar, el Laúd se hizo parte de Europa, pero Europa lo evolucionó un poco más. Formándose entonces en Italia, la mandolina. instrumento de la familia del laúd, con el mástil corto, caja de resonancia en forma de almendra, con el fondo convexo o plano, que se toca con plectro'; y esta, a su vez, del italiano mandolino.
Aunque me estoy remontando a tiempos posteriores, porque la mandolina tuvo un precursor que fue La Mandola. Ahora para no hacerles el cuento muy largo, una Mandola es a una Mandolina lo que una Viola es al Violín, que a simple vistas parecen iguales (solo que una es un poco más grande que la otra), pero la mandola y la viola tienen una sonoridad más grave que la mandolina y el violín.
Y un dato muy curioso de las mandolinas y los violines, es que tienen la misma afinación, ambos instrumentos utilizan la misma tesitura: G, D, A, E. Las únicas diferencias que tienen es que el violín es un instrumento de cuerda frotada y posee cuatro cuerdas, mientras que la mandolina es un instrumento de cuerda percutida y para tener mayor agilidad en su "staccatto" cuenta con ocho cuerdas. Son cuatro conjuntos de cuerdas con su par a unos milímetros de distancia.
Después de toda ésta mezcla de culturas que hubo en la colonización no está demás saber que la mandolina pudo haber aterrizado en Venezuela desapercibida hasta estar en nuestras manos en éste siglo XXI.
Sin embargo he de mencionar que así como Italia pudo hacer una versión del Laúd, Venezuela no quedó atrás. La Bandola Venezolana, que aunque con algunas diferencias, tenemos cosas muy similares en sonido, y en estructura.
La mandolina (de 8 cuerdas), la bandola andina (de 12 cuerdas) y la bandolina (de 16 cuerdas), son instrumentos musicales distintos, por sonido, forma y número de cuerdas; pero de forma general se tiende a confundirlos entre ellos, en su nombre o denominación.
Sin más que decir amigos, espero hayan aprendido algo nuevo hoy. Algo que yo tampoco sabía, pero que me di la tarea de investigarlo por curiosidad. Saludos a todos!!!

After my first cup of coffee at 04:00 in the morning. I started to think about how beautiful the interpretation of the Pisa Peines in a chordophone instrument like the one that is usually played in this region of the country.
After a couple of seconds analyzing this music I noticed that I didn't know the origin of this particular instrument....
Where does the mandolin come from?
This doubt arose in me because I am not so familiar with the transcendence of the Creole instruments that accompany us day by day in our folklore.
But thinking about it, a mandolin has nothing similar to a cuatro, a harp or a maraca, of course it shares with the first two options its plucked string structure. But...
There was something that escaped me; I remember seeing in some Asian movies some mandolin-like instruments. Then also came to me a particular instrument that I had also known from some movies but these were American.
These two instruments are the Laud and the Banjo, which are similar but different. It was not difficult to recognize that the mandolin is the daughter of the Lute, an Arab instrument.
It is a plucked string instrument, whose origin dates back to the Middle Ages and whose introduction to Europe was through Islamic Spain (Al-Andalus). It was widely used between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries, and has re-emerged in the twentieth century.
So thinking about it a little bit, things start to connect, the lute became part of Europe, but Europe evolved it a little bit more. The mandolin was then formed in Italy, an instrument of the lute family, with a short neck, almond-shaped soundboard, with a convex or flat bottom, played with a plectrum'; and this, in turn, from the Italian mandolino.
Although I am going back to later times, because the mandolin had a precursor which was The Mandola. Now to not make the story too long, a Mandola is to a Mandolin what a Viola is to the Violin, which at first glance seem the same (only that one is a little bigger than the other), but the mandola and the viola have a deeper sonority than the mandolin and the violin.
And a very curious fact about mandolins and violins, is that they have the same tuning, both instruments use the same tessitura: G, D, A, A, E. The only differences they have is that the violin is a fretted string instrument and has four strings, while the mandolin is a plucked string instrument and to have more agility in its "staccatto " has eight strings. There are four sets of strings with their pair a few millimeters apart.
After all this mixture of cultures that took place in the colonization, it is not superfluous to know that the mandolin could have landed in Venezuela unnoticed until being in our hands in this century XXI..
However, I must mention that just as Italy was able to make a version of the lute, Venezuela was not left behind. The Venezuelan Bandola, that although with some differences, we have very similar things in sound, and structure.
The mandolin (with 8 strings), the Andean bandola (with 12 strings) and the bandolina (with 16 strings), are different musical instruments, by sound, shape and number of strings; but in general they tend to be confused with each other, in their name or denomination.

Siempre había tenido la duda sobre la procedencia de la mandolina, porque siempre escuchaba que los instrumentos del folklore venezolano son arpa, cuatro y maracas, pero veía a mi abuelo materno tocar mandolina mientras otro amigo lo acompañaba con el cuatro y creía que ambos instrumentos procedían de nuestra cultura. Me encanta el sonido de la mandolina y disfruto mucho escuchar a los músicos que tocan ese instrumento con tanta destreza y belleza. ❤️

Así es, ha sido de mucha ayuda y como lo has dicho, la destreza para tocar un instrumento como la mandolina es admirable, al igual que aquéllos que tocan el arpa. Hay que sentir una gran pasión por el instrumento para dedicar el tiempo necesario para aprender a tocarlo y que la gente disfrute al escucharlo.
