As the Deer (cover) - VIBES Week 1
As the deer panteth for the water is a very beautiful song the origins of which are rather obscure. However, it is known to have originated from old religious texts, specifically from Psalm 42:1. The text arrangement which I use is attributed to the 19th century minister, Robert Murray M'Cheyne. The melody which I present is composed by Martin J. Nystrom in 1984.
I love this song so much because it talks about my deep yearning for God whom I hope to see some day. The writer uses the analogy of a deer and the running stream to express our desire or quest to drink from the infinite fountain of the divine. Our souls at times can be so thirsty and weary and desirous of refreshment. It is a song of love and deep yearning for our maker and Father.
But apart from that, I find the melody, lyrics and progression really touching. The musicality of the song alone is perhaps enough for me to love it. It is very calm, soothing and warm and I tried to present it as best as I could. I feel so grateful to be able to play this song on the piano and sing it as well. It is as though the writer of the melody tailored it to sooth 'my' own desires and personal way of expression.
I chose this song because I think it will resonate with many people. If not by its lyrics and content, then just by the calmness of the music. I hope people find peace in it.
