I almost didn't make it again this week. Today is Tuesday and as we all already know, Tuesdays there is music on Hive.
I had been thinking about this post since January 1st, but a thousand things made me postpone it, but as my grandmother used to say: “It's never too late when it's too late”. ;)
I want to dedicate this post to one of the legends of Latin American music, the incomparable Argentine singer Leo Dan, who passed away at the age of 82 this January 1st.
More than talking about his artistic and musical life, I want to remember him in this post based on my experiences, my memories, how an idol is seen through the eyes of children, youth and adults, and how it is true that music has no age or era.
Before I start, I want to say that I grew up, like many Venezuelans who were born in the 70's and 80's, listening to Leo Dan. My mother was a fan of this Argentinean singer and like most Venezuelan mothers, every time she did the housework, she listened to music and it was normal that Leo Dan was the one that sounded the most.
“Mary es mi amor” is one of Leo Dan's most popular songs and one of the most beautiful. I had an aunt whose name was Mary and she had a boyfriend, who had a motorcycle, who sang this song to her. And even though my Aunt Mary never got anywhere with that boy, I remember as a child I thought it was great that there was a song with your name on it.
“Esa pared”, is another of Leo Dan's best known musical pieces. In my family, this piece became the soundtrack of an anecdote of my parents. Dad used to have drinks on the weekends, but on a certain Saturday, my mother got upset with him because she heard some rumors. When my father arrived that Saturday night, my mother had moved all the objects in the room (she had done it on purpose) and my father, in the dark of the night, bumped into a wall: “But that wall wasn't there”, was the excuse for such a blow. From then on, when he moved the furniture, we would say to mom: “That wall”.
I want to close this post with “Cómo te extraño mi amor”, not only because in this concert, which was one of the singer's last, Leo Dan sings this piece as a duet with Rubén Albarrán, the brilliant vocalist of Café Tacvba, but also because this song represents the love of my parents.
Before my parents could live together, they had to overcome certain vicissitudes, vicissitudes in life. The distance, more than forgetfulness brought estrangement and hope. “Turn up the volume,” my mother would tell me when this song started to play on our music player. And more than pain for the experiences lived, my mother sang happily because they had overcome all the trials.
As I close this post, I have two great certainties. The first is that if you are Venezuelan and grew up in the 80's, Leo Dan's music is surely part of the soundtrack of your life and the other is that the musical legacy of this great singer will remain alive in our hearts and musical memory.
