Por ser una celebración que combina la fe católica con costumbres paganas, así como podemos escuchar canciones que son rezos al santo, igual podemos escuchar el retumbe de los tambores mientras la gente comienza a danzar afiebradamente, moviendo las caderas y el cuerpo. Uno de los rituales más populares es el que se hace con la clara de un huevo en un vaso con agua. La idea es hacer una pregunta mientras viertes la clara y luego, interpretar la imagen que se formará en el agua.

Otro de los rituales es saltar el fuego. La idea es crear una hoguera y luego saltarla tantas veces como deseos pidas. Mientras saltas, se le puede pedir a San Juan Bautista: dinero, matrimonio, embarazo, viajes. Esta segunda pieza musical, que descubrí por casualidad y que es de una artista joven, describe todo el sincretismo de esta celebración.

La última pieza es del famoso cantante venezolano "El pollo Brito", el cual es considerado como el rey midas de los últimos años, y el tercer ritual que compartiré con ustedes se hace con agua de mar. Recuerden que el agua de mar sirve para sanar, limpiar y activar energías, por lo que se dice que se pueden meter en el mar y mientras te bañas, pedirle, mentalmente, a San Juan todo lo que quieres. Recuerda que, si San Juan te lo tiene, San Juan te lo da.

In some Venezuelan towns, especially those on the coast, the day of St. John the Baptist is celebrated with great joy. The eve of the 24th and the day itself lend themselves for the people to take to the streets, in procession with the Saint, to the sound of drums, mixing prayers with songs, dancing, praying, but also performing incantations and rituals. Today I would like to share with you three pieces that serve to celebrate this feast of Afro-descendant roots and three rituals that are customary on the night of the 23rd.
Being a celebration that combines the Catholic faith with pagan customs, just as we can hear songs that are prayers to the saint, we can also hear the rumbling of the drums as people begin to dance feverishly, moving their hips and bodies. One of the most popular rituals is the one done with the white of an egg in a glass of water. The idea is to ask a question while pouring the egg white and then, interpret the image that will form in the water.
Another ritual is to jump over the fire. The idea is to create a bonfire and then jump over it as many times as you ask for wishes. As you jump, you ask San Juan Bautista for money, marriage, pregnancy, travel. This second piece of music, which I discovered by chance and which is by a young artist, describes all the syncretism of this celebration.
The last piece is by the famous Venezuelan singer “El pollo Brito”, who is considered the king midas of the last years, and the third ritual that I will share with you is done with sea water. Remember that sea water is used to heal, cleanse and activate energies, so it is said that you can get into the sea and while you bathe, mentally ask San Juan for everything you want. Remember that if San Juan has it for you, San Juan gives it to you.
Finally, let's remember that these celebrations are part of the folklore of the people and even if we do not agree with these celebrations, we must respect those beliefs. For my part, I hope to travel this year to Choroní and dance the drums until my body gets tired.
