The Lyrical Imbalances In Modern Day Music
I can remember how I used to have a lyric book where I wrote Celine Dion, Boys II Men, West Life, Lauren Hill and many more musical artists. Their songs are written in such a way that it points to one aspect of life or the other. The truth today is that all that old fashioned way of life has been polluted by the many negative influenced songs on the rampage in this present period of time.
Today's songs mostly preach nudity. I wonder what has happened to censorship of music before they are released to the public. This is one aspect of the social and entertainment ministry that has lost it grip on what happens to the music we listen to today.
Another thing that is rampant in the music lyrics is money, money and money. All you will hear most entertainers say in their songs is how they wished they have more money and how they would ride the world if they did. This is exactly how music has shaped our society today. Most teenages and young adults are moved or pressured by the lyrics of negative songs such that they have become a menace to society.
The lyrics of most music nowadays encourage cybercrimes. It is so bad that every latest song talks about how to take advantage of the vulnerable in the social media or internet space.
Many Benefits of Song Lyrics of the '80
The 1980s had some of the most sociable humans on the surface of the earth. This can be accredited to the lyrics of songs they listened to.
Typical examples of songs that were of positive influence in the 1980s is Michael Jackson's We Are The World. This song spoke a lot about good neighborliness, humanity and tolerance.
You must have heard of Teddy Pendergrass, Lione Richie, Soul For Real, Sade Adu, and a host of other almost perfect song writers. They made the world so cool. But today, we seem to be too much in a rush these days. The song's lyrics are fast paced, depicting the nature of people who sang them. Everyone is in a rush to make a name or sing a song. Some don't even take time to peruse the weight of the lyrics before producing the song.
Artists of the 1989 era wrote songs that have a depth of live wordings and emotions. The lyrics can transport someone back to a moment in their lives. These songs resonate the listeners on a deep level of love, societal issues, or heartbreak.
At another level, songs written in the past dwelled on issues around hostility against nature, political unrest or embezzlement of public funds like in the case of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The songs acted like a protest to the government of the day and in most cases, the government either adjusted or fought back.
Having said this, one may not be able to deny the fact that some songs, though unpopular, are very good as they teach morals but quite a number of the songs written in this present age are full of exuberance and worldliness.
They have forgotten the fact that muses speak life to the world. We live by listening to the lyrics from songs. We learn primarily from most songs, but songs nowadays have become something so annoying.
I got stuck with Reggae and Fela's songs because of the message they pass to the world. Today's songs are mostly about money relationship in its crude form and money making ventures.
Exactly.
Sometimes, all you learn in the song
Of nowadays is new abuses and slangs of covering up evil.
Those artists that sing about money and promote cybercrimes in their videos do not know that they're also consciously encouraging the younger generation to commit crimes. That is how impactful music is.
That's why we should be careful of the kind of music we listen to or allow our children, siblings or relatives listen to.
