Music Is A Demon ~ Hive Naija Prompt #11

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. ~ Plato

Music could be a good or very bad residue that possesses a man. The kind of music you listen to determines what behaviour you put out. Hence, it may not be wrong to say music is a demon. It is an instrument to create a better society or to destroy the heritage of the society.

The world is indeed changing and people are changing with it. The world is still the same space, only people change. It has not stopped raining nor has the sun stopped shining. Talking about the changing state of music around the world or in Nigeria, I would say that we have had it rather bad today than it was in the past.

Many people may not seem to understand what transpired in the 80s or the 90s because they were not born then but the record about what transpired in the music world is scattered everywhere on the internet and around libraries.

Going back to the days when the internet was not as popular as it is today, we would have to buy lyric books to learn some songs. Those songs were very useful. They could be used to inspire or motivate an individual, devoid of nudity and shameful acts of smoking and lavishly advertising money. That wasn't the reason for producing songs in the 80s and 90s.

Fast forward to the present day, the music that we listen to is outright a misdemeanor to societal growth. The painful aspect is that the worst kind of songs are the most patronized.

Propagating Love For Worldliness

I would like to say that when we do a particular thing because we want to make money from it, we may be called to do it to earn money.
Many music artists have left their first genre of music and have clinched something more acceptable to a corrupt world. Though these guys make the fame they have always dreamed of but have left an indelible negative impact on society.

New Dirty Slang

Some songs are not worth making a reference to the coming generation and we have quite a number of such music flying freely around our space. Soapy is one such dirty slang. This slang as typical about the Nigerian musician name Naira Marley, a name synonymous to Marijuana. The slang promoted masturbation among the very young and innocent children even. It was that bad. Other artists who are known for dirty language in their songs include Bode Blaq, Reminisce, Olamide…….

We Can Go Back In Time

Someone said that this generation should be pitied for the kind of songs they listen to. I bet you, we are leaving a dangerous legacy for the next generation.
It is however not too late to reconsider the music we are keeping in archives. It is also not too late to take some steps back to campaign against bad music.
The big question here is what happened to the music censorship board? Do we have one or are we in a free production mode for musicians?
Some thirty years ago, there were songs that spoke against ills in society but today, music is speaking ills into society.
I would really like to see a world where my children and their children will sit and listen to Dolly Parton, Celine Dion, Boys II Men, Style Plus, Plantations Boys, Soul For Real, Destiny's Child, Craig David, Oboli Omoni, Buju Banti, and so many other evergreen music that will never go into extinction.

Some of Our Music Are Not Bad

Having said the above, we have produced some very good music from the shores of Nigeria that are now making waves across the globe.

It is an unfortunate occurrence to see people listening to some kind of music or for even music producers or songwriters to stoop so low with corrupt lyrics in the name of making music.

I will not lie. I get disappointed when I hear certain music. Lol. Naira Marley was something else. Personally, I try to avoid demeaning these artist but I avoid their songs. This is why I am more drawn to songs with more of life and reality to it.

True how these songs have promoted all sorts of mindsets and shit like that. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I laugh when I hear these boys (mostly boys who like to justify themselves) defend these songs tooth and nail. Like I said, I wouldn’t go as far as trash talk because it is still walk and I don’t know these people but you won’t catch me listening to them on my own. Impossicant!😂

Thank you @deraaa for this critique. The truth still remains that society can be better if our voices are heard through articles like this.

Even though these songs make waves, the content or lyrics in the songs leave a lot to behoove.

For trashing the persons, that shouldn't the a big deal. As much you and I do not listen to those songs, our children may become influenced, so our relatives and before you would say, Jack Robinson, the world would get polluted the more.

We can’t stop the world from getting polluted honestly. It will one way or the other. The best is to teach when we can.

Personally I try as much as possible to filter my playlist. I don't just jump on music trends because music is like a food to our souls.
Our generation really have a lot of work to do, it breaks my heart watching kids sing songs that have nasty lyrics.

Correct.
We should have a choice and not allow every kind of music paraded around to be part of us.

Our personality is somewhat designed by the kind of music we listen to.
