The missing element

IMG_20240218_172317.jpg

What we mean by being kind may depend on our own perception and tolerance as well as how we actually express our kindness. We perceive affection depending on our set standards but the cultural background of each country also gets into the formula. Of course, common sense implies some basic universal social skills and those signs by which we let others know that we respect them.

Please and thank you are words that we parents teach our children, perhaps from the very beginning. I know that every time it was unpleasant for me if my son did not say thank you to a person who gave him something or said some nice words. This was due to shyness, and because children slowly acquire social skills and express them when they feel confident enough. But what about adults?

It goes without saying that we are educated and kind, each to his own extent, but I repeat that it also depends on other factors. I had the opportunity to meet so many different people and nationalities in the hotel where I have been playing the piano every Sunday morning for more than two years. Mainly European guests, I have to be honest, but sometimes I see Japanese people. Canadian and American guests also come to exchange a few words with me. Norwegian guests are educated but reserved; they enjoy the music and smile. Dutch, German and English guests many times come to chitchat a bit and thank for the music while they are having breakfast with those sunny views toward the sea.

IMG_20240218_172049.jpg

Spaniards are warm and open people and each time they stop to talk to me; they are very grateful. There were also times I got a flower or an invitation to a drink or cup of coffee, requests for a photo or a video while I played the piano or suggestions for songs. All of this is not because the music I play is out of this world or the way I play, but because people are showing a lot of kindness.

You see, those are indeed very nice moments accompanied by smiles and good vibes that for sure give me more satisfaction with what I do. But tell me, would you get up every Sunday at 7 am because you have to get ready for work? These little details help in the part of getting up early from bed on weekends.

IMG_20240218_172011.jpg

Other nice details were the roses and hearts in the hotel. Yes, because of the 14th of February (hmm, they should leave this decoration for the whole year in my opinion). I had a good time today too but there is one situation that made me write down this large introduction to the main point that I wanted to highlight. You guess - kindness. Or the lack of it.

I have no issues with playing a song that a guest asks for if I have it prepared. It doesn't happen often but why not if I am kindly asked? But... a man approached me and asked can I play the Rhapsody? Oh, I was so naive and thought it would be some of Franz Liszt's or Brahms' rhapsodies, but it was the Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, as it turned out. I don't play it as it needs to be a good arrangement to sound well played just on the piano.

I felt a bit (but just a bit) sorry for not fulfilling the musical wish of the guest until the moment he requested me to play anything by Queen, but oh... there was a missing ingredient in his appeal. I missed that element of kindness that would motivate me to play "anything" by Queen. And it almost sounded like an order!

So, you already suppose that there were no Queen songs today in my gig 😂 although I had there the scores of one nice piece I sometimes play, Love Of My Life. Maybe he just didn't see all those hearts and roses around. Who knows.

Yes It happens a lot that some people is so natural and have such a good vibes that you are very open to connect with them and please them in any way, but there are other people that think all the humans around them are their slaves and if they are in a position of doing some work or service they have the rights to treat you like they own you , they are just crazy people and really bad costumers

I don't think I will read a better story today. A musical post with many details of kindness, totally inspiring. I think your reaction to this fact is totally normal, every action between human beings works, better when respect is involved. Do not feel sorry for having thought of another musical work, that person should feel sorry for not knowing that this great hit in the world is called Bohemian Rhapsody, there is no mistake in requesting it if it is called by its name. I hope that among your scores there is something by Maestra Shakira, because in March it will be a very special request 🤭

It was just the way how he said later: Pues toca alguna otra de Queen which sounded to me almost like an order... and it made me wonder why he couldn't add a bit of amiability to the request ;)

Shakira hahaha! No me pidas esto, please 😂

No matter how rich or wealthy a human can be, please and thank you are words that such a person should be able to say
It helps to show that you are humble and in one way or the other, they are acts of kindness

I see that the hotel is adequately prepared for any fire situation, however this client may need glasses to be able to look around better.

Yes, there are those little fire extinguishers, but I think that they would not be enough in the case of a major fire 🔥

Glasses for the guest - 👓

No, it's not enough.

I love that view through the glass. Thank you.

That happens sometimes, not everyone is friendly although it is true here they are a lot. That person in his request could have added the word please, or just a different tone would have been enough.

Kindness and empathy are important and giving thanks is essential, but many people... don't know that.

A big hug @mipiano ❤️

Exactly, just a different tone and it would make a difference 😊

But generally, we have to say that people here in Spain are kind and friendly, at least that is what I noticed ;)

Have a great week, @avdesing 🌻

I wish I could mitigate your frustration, if it can be called that. Don't think you did wrong, it was just a defensive reaction. There are people like to say, mean spirited, and lacking in sensitivity. I know what you are like even though I don't know you in person. Kind, sensitive, dutiful and responsible. Don't pay too much attention and don't let it get to you. An experience like that is a lesson. Beautiful that hotel those beautiful floral decorations. How not to see the truly beautiful including the music.Bonita semana y adelante.🤗🥰♥️

It didn't affect me in the way of getting frustrated. More like it was an observation that everything is better with amiability and that a pianist is not always supposed to fulfil all the musical wishes of the guests 😁
The decoration was nice for this week, but I suppose they will remove it. In any case, the views from the windows are so nice that we don't need much more!
Thank you for your always kind words and may you have a successful and happy week 🌼

It is a shame that things like this happen. Bad education abounds in all geographies and has no borders, but fortunately there are still many who show education and transmit good vibes.

Good thing your day was not clouded by the arrogant and rude behavior of that person, allá él...se lo perdió 😒.

I'm not one for hearts and roses, but I loved the decor of the hotel, and the light coming through those glass windows is heaven. I wouldn't mind getting up early on Sundays to go to work in a place like that. Al menos 2 o 3 domingos 🤭😁.

allá él...se lo perdió

Well yes, that's the thing haha. And this is just a small example; what about all the other, more serious situations when just a little smile could change things for the better?

Jaja, al menos 2 o 3 domingos... eso sí. Aunque es un trabajo que me gusta, es gratificante. 😇

Hola Mipiano, I hope your aphonia is gone and you got rid of the annoying cough.

...what about all the other, more serious situations when just a little smile could change things for the better?

The magic of a smile can change everything, but...stubbornness and human arrogance, sometimes, have no limits.

Aunque es un trabajo que me gusta, es gratificante. 😇

Eso es lo importante, si te hace feliz, no importa cuando ni donde.

Feliz semana para toda la familia. 🤗

Kindness should be spread around the world, coz some people forgot what kindness is sometimes, even just a little kindness would be big enough already, be appreciative, learn to say thank you. Well, I'm saying this but I'm also guilty at this. Though my reason is more like my shyness and my low voice is always on the way. 😫

Shyness is one thing, and also, there are differences in cultures etc. It is not the same when someone thinks that others have to fulfil their wishes as default. 😅

Oh my God, I didn't expect someone to approach you asking for that "rhapsody" hahaha. No way! just out of curiosity, do you remember what piece you were playing just before that curious request?.
Children are often more attentive in such situations.
Solo puedo pensar en la cara que se te habrá quedado en ese momento xD.

That rhapsody would not be a problem, I like the song but I am not Freddie Mercury to know how to sing while playing the piano hahaha. I need just a piano arrangement, a good one, para que no sea cutre 😆
Oh, the one I was playing just before the request. I think this one as it was the block of soundtracks I was playing then. Esta queda muy chula en piano 😇

By going to a place with a natural view, in the same way we get a lot of peace and things look beautiful with the decoration and here again a person sits for a long time and his mind releases the tension by looking at the natural things.

Wow! Pretty on point. Really, this is the heart beat of everyone and the reason to always stay abreast, motivated and enthusiastic in the phase of anything. I believe the magic words did not only end in sorry and please but little display of love can go a long way also. However, I sincerely subscribe and also respect our human differences but your guest would have showed some love as you suggested smiles and never envisioning you to have been Jack of all harmonies, giving him those symphonic vibes from Queens imprumptuly. Emphatically, I would conclude that kindness can open doors our imaginations may not fathom, bye.

Much agree, that kindness can open many doors, so would happen in this case too if just a bit different vibe was shown

Ah... what a pity he missed that 😔

That's a beautiful tune. In fact... I'm going to play it right this very minute

I'd love to hear you play it!

And I hear you. I used to give folks discounts when I traded/sold clothing that were entirely dependent on how they asked 😆

If they were disrespectful or rude - sorry. No discount and probably not even any service.

One of the perks of being your own boss. ;)
