The members of SMO are studying diligently (and having fun) in Altenhausen (Germany) this week

SMO - states for Sinfonische Musikschulorchester des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt, but if you are not familiar with the German language here comes the translation to English: Symphonic Music School Orchestra of the state of Saxony-Anhalt.

This is a wonderful project that apart from gathering young musicians from more than 20 music schools in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, welcomes also Spanish students since last autumn. I wrote about it here when my son participated in that one-week-long experience with German musicians. They worked hard and had two concerts in the end, but most importantly they met a different method of practising, of rehearsals, and they learned about the language and cultures of each other. It was a great feeling and after the concert, the organizer invited the Spanish students to this new encounter, which is happening right now in Altenhausen (Germany).

Our son wanted to go and work again with them so we didn't think twice. The secretary of the conservatory where my son studies the violin was the one who would take them to Germany. His wife also signed up and six students in total. We bought together the plane tickets and sorted out all the necessary documentation that our children needed (international health care cards, authorizations, transportation etc). So we had two adults to take care of six teenagers during the travel and the stay in Altenhausen. (Good luck to them 😁)

The day of travel came. Actually, night. We had to get up at 2:55 a.m. this Sunday, after a few hours of "sleep". You can guess that it was a very weak sleeping time though, I felt I was awake for the whole time but tried to have my eyes closed at least.

My son packed the previous night. The suitcase was already full and the backpack was half-empty at the moment this photo was taken, but later it was also filled with stuff!

IMG_20240203_204446.jpg

That night we went to pick up one of my son's friends, so not all the parents had to drive to the airport. We were waiting for her. Do you see the time? ... the clock in the car shows 3:27. We agreed to meet at 3:25 but two minutes of delay in nothing here in Spain. The good thing is that in these hours there was no one on the roads and even the highway was empty. No traffic jams so the trip was smooth and quick.

IMG_20240204_032738.jpg

We met all the other travellers (two adults and the rest of the students - my son's classmates from the music conservatory) at the airport of Alicante-Elche. The flight was already announced for 6:00 but they had plenty of time to pass the control and wait in the terminal. Yay, I didn't cry when we said goodbye hahaha. My baby is growing up - he will know how to take care of himself.

A little detail from the airport before my husband and I went for the car and headed home. This is a replica of a famous sculpture, Dama de Elche. This lady is an Iberian artefact from the 4th century BC, that was found close to Elche. The original sculpture can be found in the National Archaeological Museum of Spain in Madrid.

From the moment we said goodbye to our son, we are waiting for every message he is sending us.

Here our baby was flying above the clouds and the sun was coming out. What is happening with the horizon? Is it crooked? Is it leaking to one side? 😂

The flight was good, they arrived at Berlin airport with a few minutes of delay because of the wind but everything else was good. From the airport, they took a bus and this is the moment they arrived at Altenhausen. Students from other places were arriving too.

I know they were excited but tired, as no one slept on the plane!

So where are my son, his friends, and the rest of the students now?

As I wrote, they are in a tiny village called Altenhausen, in the middle of fields. There is almost nothing around! That is what I saw on the map and what my son also confirmed to me when we talked yesterday. But the very nice thing is that they are based here. Isn't it like in a fairytale?

This is the castle where they sleep, and have all the food (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks) and the rehearsals.

This is the third day they are there. Or is it the fourth day already? Oh, I can't count anymore. But this is what they do, basically for the whole day - studying the orchestra repertory. With some little breaks, of course!

IMG-20240205-WA0010.jpg

The secretary of the music conservatory sent me this photo

Between all those hours of music, they are allowed and probably encouraged to walk a bit around in the break after lunch. The weather is not perfect, I mean it is not sunny but at least it is not freezing. He took a lot of warm clothes but in the end, he said that would not use them. No need.

Yesterday evening they had great fun. I received a bunch of videos, where these around 90 students were jumping, dancing, singing (oh, it was more screaming than singing hahaha) traditional Valencian medieval songs, played on two dulzainas! 😂

My reaction was bursting out of laughter!!

But so good to see them enjoying themselves and mixing different traditions and cultures.

I am wondering what this little creature thinks about all that music that is coming from the castle these days... Is he confused?

Oh, right now while I am writing these lines, I got new messages from him! They are visiting the city of Magdeburg! In the afternoon they will be back, and they will continue with the practicing hours until late in the evening!

I will be still waiting for more updates from them, day by day... This Sunday they will be flying back and then he will be able to tell us everything with more details and what this intensive musical experience of one week meant to him.

What a lovely place your son went to! I love it and I'm glad he decided to participate. I bet he's glad too 😛

I want to be there too hahaha. We talked now, it was cold when they went to Magdeburg this afternoon. They had an activity to learn about the organ in a huge church (or a cathedral) and they froze down there 😂

How exciting! These meetings are fabulous for young people, for their personal and professional growth....

Indeed. It is also a challenge, to be able to follow this heavy rhythm of work and all the activities + the different climate, and the different language etc... but a point from one can grow, that is true ;)

What a wonderful experience your son is having. Those exchange programs are fabulous, so many teenagers from different cultures, traditions, ways of thinking, but all speaking the same language...the language of music.

What great captures by Mipiano junior, that sunrise is beautiful. And the place they are in looks like something out of a fairy tale.

The experience must be unique though! So many things to work on and practice, and on Saturday they will have the concert. 🎶 :)

Saturday's concert is sure to be a great success.

How beautiful is the sculpture of the Lady of Elche!
It is super beautiful the place where your son is, he is going to enjoy a lot this experience! The landscapes are beautiful and all of them gathered there, I thrilled you, didn't I?

What a wonderful experience. Thank you @mipiano!😀

For sure it is a great experience, and enjoyment but hard work too. They practice every day between 6 and 8 hours and don't sleep a lot haha, but this is one week, and then on Sunday afternoon we will see him again 😇

He will be so happy that he won't even notice that he doesn't sleep much, when you love what you do, the rest doesn't matter. The reunion will be beautiful!

Yes, and you know how Germans work! No time to be lazy :D

Today they went to a huge church in Magdeburg and learned about the organ, it was explained and they could try it. Also, they listened to a concert with the same organ player and froze down because it was so cold 😁

I was hoping to see your son and I meet... a goat! 🤣🤣

Seriously, what a beautiful experience. That musical castle is like a fairy tale. I'm sure he's enjoying it very much and so are you, a couple again for a little. 😁😘

Haha, yeah, a goat. He says that this goat and one rabbit are the only living creatures around there 😂
But he is there, in that photo where they have a rehearsal ;)

Yes - the parents enjoy hahaha and we are also happy for him and the opportunity to live this!

Ay mipiano, I can imagine that feeling of waiting for every message from your boy. But he's happy doing what he loves and yes, that musical castle is like something out of a fairy tale. Undoubtedly this will be a great experience in his life and yours too as his parents.
Tell him to take lots of pictures so that through you he can tell us about his visits.
I wish your son a lot of success and may he grow in every way.
The little goat has a face 😵... hahaha

We also talked and got more updates, about the escape from his previous room during the last night 😂 (ahora él y un otro amigo están compartiendo la habitación con sus amigas de Altea. Tiene mi autorización jajaja) about freezing down in the church where they were today, about the wind, work, hunger haha (they get the dinner at 18:00 but it happens that the Spaniards are used to eat late in the evening so the teachers bring them snacks from a supermarket haha)
And we also got a new bunch of photos!

But yes, it is true that this experience is unique! I would love to have the same opportunity like this at his age, or even now, I would not mind.

The goat 😂

I wish your son a lot of success and may he grow in every way.

Thank you! 😊

🤣

They seem to be very well looked after, so nothing to worry about. Snacks, walks... fun.

And when is this concert they are rehearsing for?

It means two and a half days more of 6-8 hours of rehearsals per day :D

I like the photos of the building. It looks to me like Hodward Colledge, in Harry Potter's movies. It is an ancient place!Any way, there must be Magic too wherever exist Children or teenagers who play music.

Yeah, the castle is of that kind, like from Harry Potter. And those young musicians indeed make magic with their music! :))🎶

Our children get big in the blink of an eye. But they are still our babies. What beautiful places and I imagine how happy your son must be. It's important already. How happy you must be and worried at the same time. Everything will be fine and he has your support, it's important. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful Thursday.❤️🥰

Yes, our children, even when they are not small anymore will always remain our "babies".

They are having a good time. Today the TV came a recorded a part of the rehearsal - they must feel famous now 😁 and in the evening (now) it is snowing in Germany, so they made a snowman :))
Thank you and may you have a nice Thursday too Mamani!

OMG your son is so lucky, that looks crazy awesome, although maybe you don't see that at his age. But it almost makes me wanna go to Germany again....but I prefer a bit more sun and less Bratwurst so I keep aiming for America Latina for now.

And it is awesome, they really got it super well organized and the castle is just amazing, we are getting every day more and more photos and videos. A lot of work, that is true, but also good time. It snowing there right now so imagine the excitement of the Spanish students haha. My son sent me this haha

{not my kid so I put a sticker on the face of that boy}

Son and Adultery! You'll be enjoying sooo much relaxing time, when your husband allows that of course 😆

two minutes of delay in nothing here in Spain

😆😆😆

What is happening with the horizon? Is it crooked? Is it leaking to one side?

that one deserves three 😆😆😆

NJOY to no-son-at-home time

ps just a beautiful room they are practising in! 🥰

hahaha

Well, I am waiting for you to take him to H., but then I also have to send my son again for an intensive violin course for that time haha. :D

Yeah, so beautiful is the place and that huge hall where they practice. Though they also have smaller rehearsals like here

IMG_20240208_225639.jpg

Then running down the stairs

IMG-20240208-WA0028.jpg

as it is snowing outside!!!

I guess so indeed being 17 again would be kick ass! but time travelling is not possible as of yet, so we can just try and NJOY the age we are at. that said, join your Husband to H and we'll behave like being 17 yrs old for a few days. like skipping out of the conference whenever we like. making amok in the streets. perhaps even damage something and run away.

trying to book my train to H already for days, but Deutsche Bahn doesn't allow me to login. Days out of service. will try again this weekend.

You son is having a great time there obviously. He would be proud of having a supporting mom. I love the castle and the environment. I am sure that the pictures and videos represents just a small fraction of his experience. He will have a lot more to narrate when he returns.
