Thanks to my student we can now swim with Iris Hond...

Teaching piano (or any other subject) is not just exclusively reserved for passing your knowledge to the students. It is a natural interaction between the teacher and student, and if you are getting well along, then it is an enjoyable activity for both parties. The teacher can even learn something from the students or learn about some new trends that they (mostly teenagers) talk about. Or just meet the names of the new singers, bands and artists they like (and dislike). A sort of this happened today. {at the time I finished and published this in post, it became yesterday}

So, I have that Dutch student who is a real chatterbox. I guess our piano lessons are also a kind of therapy, so I let her (though I have to cut her so many times and kindly remind her why she is coming to the lesson... hmm, to play the piano :D ). In one of her rants about the school, she explained to me the project she has to do, to pick a famous person and do a presentation. She didn't know actually how to do it. I gave her some tips, like structuring the presentation, doing a list of things she would like to talk about etc. The famous person she chose for that presentation is a Dutch pianist, Iris Hond.

I haven't heard about that piano lady, but my student told me a few words about her. That it is the favourite pianist of her grandparents... that the pianist, Iris, likes to play without shoes... and what her surname (Hond) means. Pause. A long one. I guess she will have to do a bit of research to be ready for the project and know more things about Iris, so I did it too when I finished the lesson. No, not big research but I searched for the name, found her Spotify and YouTube channel and gave it a try. I couldn't even do a more detailed search in this short time from learning the name of the pianist until now, however, I can say that I probably like what I hear right now while writing these lines. I am listening to the track Quiet. Let's watch the video together if you like.

video source - YouTube

Sound of the waves, dawn... we hear the first sounds of the piano and strings. Very calm. Classical piano scores flow in the water. More strings and the cello very slowly bring the music closer. We see a young lady swimming in a white dress. Did she escape from her wedding? From a concert? From an important thing and found the means to escape in the sea? Oh, when the piano starts it brings a bit darker note. Why the poor piano is also in the water? 😱 Isn't it difficult to swim in a long dress? I would maybe freak out a bit, as I have the feeling that my legs would get tangled in that long dress. Just when I am thinking about this difficulty seems that she is taking it down. The music got more dramatic and changed the rhythm. Yes, finally, she won't drown, the long white dress is just a matter of the past, she can swim now freely, what a relief! Hmm, maybe she is just dreaming or having an inspirational moment as we see her playing the piano, but not under the water. She found some trousers and a white tank top in the meantime, got dressed and took one part of the piano to the shore. The end.

The music we heard is a very nicely balanced piece, structurally. Also, the choice of instruments (piano, just a few strings) is simple but beautiful. In those more dramatic parts, Iris plays a few passages that resemble a bit oriental, with the ornaments she uses. (the right-hand part). If we talk about the calm parts, we can say that it is quite minimalistic, and the combination of the randomly played notes on the piano (but they are not random after all) with the cello and violins makes a super nice musical composition. And together with the dream-like video, I see it as a pleasant audio-visual candy for our mind. Well done, Iris Hond.

I think this one song I saw from her will make me dig through her other works. This piece, Quiet, made some positive impressions on me. Thanks to the fact that sometimes teachers can learn about other artists from their students.

Today is a new teaching day, the last one actually in this term. Let's see what new I will learn today from the classroom before the school break starts :))

It's good to remember our learning moments as well as our teaching moments. This was a little bit of both. Your students seem to want to open up to you. That's a good sign. And she shared this beautiful piece with you. I saw a bit of the video on the train home but I'm not ready to say much about except that I didn't know anything about Iris Hond before this post.

Many of my students actually have that feeling that can share with me their thoughts, problems, happy moments, issues, discoveries etc. Even showing me their TikTok dancing videos (happened also yesterday 😂)

Hey, but what a nice picture.
Teachers learn from their students and I like the Hond too. I think the water thing is a sensual thing, it's not that it drowns it's that it flows.
Pienso que la Hond es bastante Honda. Yo también voy a explorar en esas aguas profundas.
Gracias.

The picture is taken in the town of Calpe, one early morning, and the rock you see is called Peñón de Ifach. Yes, I can agree with you, the water in this video indeed has a sensual meaning, but still, I saw the feet and legs being trapped by the dress. Que disfrutes de la exploración de las aguas profundas 😉

Teaching is such a wonderful thing to do and I really enjoy the experience everytime especially with my musical children. It gives me joy that people are able to understand what I say to them and are able to replicate it. Among many other beautiful things such as simplicity and purity of heart found among children, I have also been able to learn lots of nursery rhymes from the children I interact with.

Thanks so much @mipiano for sharing this with us. ONE LOVE 😍 ♥

You are doing a wonderful job @onos-f with your students!! You are transmitting them not just musical knowledge but respect, patience, love... And we know that it is not always easy to teach, right? But at the same time, it is so rewarding, when the little ones, the pure-hearted ones learn with eager :))

That's one of the advantages of teaching, teaching while we also learn from the person we are teaching.. learning never ends.

Well, one could derive a lot of meaning from the video and sound of piano , as she swim above the water , the sound the volume increases, showing how relive one could be when listening to sweet melody from the piano.

The video is bad,and the solemn sound is enough to lift one's spirit.

Have a nice day😊!

I completely agree, learning never ends. A famous Spanish cellist used to practice his musical instrument even though he was already around 90 years old... He believed that we can improve every day and that there is no limit to improving the skills.

The teacher is the second parent to them, because the presence of a teacher by their side it makes them know the world better, and I really like the beach, when I am on the beach and bathing together,as if the world is ours,,
The music and piano complete your post, I am very happy with this type of music.

A teacher as a second parent... Must agree with this :)
It actually happened several times the students accidentally called me mom 😂
Thank you for reading, I am glad you liked the music 🎶🎶

Wow!... You are a piano teacher!... Great!... (My mother is a retired school teacher, I know a lot about how difficult it can be to teach others, but I also know how rewarding it can be).. As always, reading your posts is a delight because of the sublime way you have to express yourself writing... And additionally, I've been working for a while listening to Iris Hond, very relaxing by the way!... Thank you very much for this readable, thoughtful and interesting post...

PS: Great photo of the "Peñón de Ifach" wow!...

Your mother was a teacher? Oh, I see, that's why you are so educated :D

Now seriously, being a teacher is a great and challenging thing at the same time, when the little monsters... I mean, when the little angels receive with interest the knowledge, it's a great feeling. Thank you for reading my posts always @jlinaresp, I am glad you think that way, but when not, please also let me know :))

Ha ha ha... Thank you very much! ;)... My mother is almost 80 years old and a couple of weeks ago we were having breakfast together and an obscene word escaped me... And... PAFFF!!!!... An inclement smack on the head and a spiel about table manners!... Evidently she has methods that are a bit archaic, but she keeps practicing them!... She's an "old school" teacher!... haaaa haaa haaa :)

I love how you write, I like to write (I think it should be noticed) and I recognize when someone writes with the naturalness typical of those who have that talent... Always keep writing, it's a pleasure to read you!... I send a lot of hugs and good wishes for you and your nearby people!!!... And... Please be patient with the little monsters/angels, they will always appreciate what you teach them!... (My mother has a true "followers club" from former students in many parts of the world after 30 years teaching)... And this despite her occasionally smacking them on the head!... :))

I really liked it!
I read the post before the video and interrupted reading to watch it so that what you wrote next would not affect my perception.
I continued reading after watching.

And here is my perception:
The girl was in disarray, she was overwhelmed with conflicting feelings that it was difficult for her to cope with, and in the water she seemed to have "cleared" undressing, this release in my opinion.
And the way she throws the broken piano out of the sea to the shore, I perceive as an unnecessary load she has thrown behind her.
She left relaxed and happy!

Your perception and resume are great!! You analyzed her possible feelings and yeah, you are right, water also makes things clear... maybe her thoughts became clear. I know, I am biased, I can't see the piano as a load hahahaha, even if it is broken, but once again maybe you are right, as she throws it and walks away happy... 😃

What you say is totally true, teachers or instructors can learn many things from their students, since many times they come from different realities and varied tastes. This makes us get out of our comfort zone and delve into new areas, which ends up being very enriching.

I loved Iris Hond's music and video.

The video is fascinating and at the same time disturbing because of the darkness of the sea at that moment; I also think that she was running away from something she didn't want and totally detached herself from it, she was going to get married and preferred bachelorhood 😅😁😋!!!

I loved how you described the piece, really the way she balanced the strings with the piano was quite accurate to achieve a perfect balance of sounds 🙌😀💛!!!!

The experience with your student was great, we know that as teachers there will always be vicarious learning, as Albert Bandura said, and this happens in both directions, if we apply it to the educational context: teacher-student, student-teacher... knowledge will always be infinite 🔥🔥🔥!!!!

Hey, I could feel your pain with the piano in the water hahaha, the truth is that the video was very cool 👍!!!

It was a pleasure to visit you dear @mipiano, I hope you can soon rest from this school period and spend a well deserved family vacation..... You Rockkk!!! 👍😉🔥🎙️🎸🎹🎶❤️🌟🥂💥💫💯

That was my first impression too, that she was escaping from her wedding hahaha
But what is the story behind the video, everyone can have their own version. Iris in her mind maybe had a completely different scenery, and that is cool we can all see it from our perspective. The common thing is that we all feel that this music is beautiful. 💙🎶

if we apply it to the educational context: teacher-student, student-teacher... knowledge will always be infinite

Indeed. Knowledge, experience, thoughts, or influence... and can go in both directions :)
Thank you, I will definitely try to enjoy the school break as much as possible 😇😎🙂 Today is already my first day... which I spent cleaning the home 😂
Hahhaha, it was very needed already :)

That Iris, she is amazing but she had an affair with the fallen Dutch Singer Marco Borsato while he was still married. Glad to read this because in the Netherlands she is famous for being his fling.

And the Dutch are just very talkative 😂

Well, you see that my student didn't know many things to say about her (or she didn't want to 😂) and for me, it was just the music that I went for 😉
I don't even know who that singer is and it will stay that way lol, but I am glad that I could listen to her music, once again thanks to the talkative Dutch girl :))

Wow! Her music felt like dramatic, melancholic at times but there is this feeling of inner happiness, like inner freedom. I loved her music.
I think teaching really is a two way process. The students learn from the teacher and vice versa.
