Keep calm and continue with the music... if you can!

We realized it too late. The smoke...

I was in the home of my student, giving him a piano lesson when he asked me did I smoke before the lesson or if maybe I was in the church as he smells something like a candle burning. I thought he was joking about the church thing, as I was coming directly from another lesson and he knew it. We stood up, left the piano and started checking his apartment to see if something is burning. The smell was getting stronger and then we also saw the smoke coming from the ceiling LED lamp. His phone rang at the same moment - it was the neighbour asking did he smell some smoke...

Seems that it was not just us who smelled it and apparently the fire was not coming from this apartment. It was not the piano that caught fire from being played 😂 though it would give the story a more interesting note. Imagine someone playing the piano with such a passion that flame comes out of the keys 😆. But he started recently, a few months ago so from those exercises and an easy version of Beethoven's Für Elise we don't have to be afraid of.

IMG_20230316_202759.jpg

The search didn't last for a long time, just a few seconds later we looked through the window and saw the police cars and the coming fire trucks. 😱 The building where I was giving the lesson is situated in the first line from the beach, on the promenade. There are two restaurants and one souvenir shop on the ground floor, facing the promenade. What you see here are the roofs of the restaurants' terraces and the palm trees (as they were here before those terraces were covered with the roof). One smaller fire truck, two police cars and two big fire trucks were arriving at that moment. We saw the smoke coming from the place where the white roof is, on the right.

IMG_20230316_201329.jpg

The lesson was doomed 😂
He was calling the neighbours to find out what is happening, was it the fireplace in the restaurant kitchen or the extractor hood or they just wanted to make a huge BBQ? (haha just joking about the BBQ). It turned out that the isolation that was put around the extractor hood of that restaurant caught fire.

What was good is that we took this situation with calm and had fun while inventing jokes. We also mentioned the movie Titanic and how the musicians played while the ship was sinking, so we should just calmly continue the lesson. But I was a bit worried... I have never been in a situation such as this, where there is a fire in the building and I stay inside... so we decided to stop the anyway interrupted lesson.

IMG_20230316_202130.jpg

The smoke was getting denser everywhere, in the apartment and in the hallway of the building too. We took the stairs (using the elevator in case of fire in a building is forbidden) but we were blocked. The firemen were preparing to break into the place where the kitchen extractor hoods from the restaurants are placed, between two floors in the building. They said us to go back to the apartment and wait until they let us know that it is safe to take the stairs. Safe in the apartment, full of smoke, right? Oh... well, we had to listen and go back.

IMG_20230316_202232.jpg

Then we again laughed a lot remembering the Titanic scene and as if nothing, we continued the lesson 🤣

Just one piece was played but then we stopped and opened everything as my eyes got irritated from the smoke... What could we do in this situation? The firemen were there, doing their job, we were supposed to survive and wait.

Music came, but not from the piano as we were breathing air close to the open window. My student is already retired and he likes old songs, so yeah, why not try to keep calm and continue with music? We listened to songs such as Mi Corazón es un Violín, La Flor de la Canela, Limelight etc...

The whole piano-fire-smoke-blocked path-jokes-old music session lasted for an hour or so, everything was under control and then I could take the stairs and go home.
I feel a bit weird now, I still "smell" the smoke in my nose so maybe I should just go and sleep - with or without music 😁

I can't be serious obviously if someone would remind me about Titanic during that happens, something that you express which really matching to the situation like the building and how closely and its apparence. To be honest If only stroll without reading I would end up emotional 😂. Those scene also remind me of how passion, and shocking at they same time, I think I would rewatching them again.

By the way, glad everyone safely!

😯 what a day you've had.... But I confess that from beginning to end I did nothing but laugh.... That's "muy bien" to draw from weird and traumatic things an entertaining post that is otherwise beautiful. Because one can choose not to dwell on the smoke that clouds the understanding, and learn things one didn't know, about unfinished tunes, historical mistakes or errors, a bit of the personal lives of great musicians and the history behind certain compositions. It's good therapy, better than taking painkillers.
Querida mipiano (🤣 you don't know how much this sentence makes me laugh... ) Well, what I'm getting at, of course you feel weird. I hope that tomorrow the smell of smoke will be gone from your nose, although if it's long like mine, it takes time.
I don't think you can sleep and live without music.

Titanic... Hahaha, I laugh but it's serious. I don't know si te suena esto: Ви багато граєте на піаніно.

Nice dreams 💙

I am glad you laughed, that was the purpose of this post, to bring in a funny way the situation I have lived. ;) Maybe it was serious, maybe not that much, but we can turn it to smile. I hope you will be better today with your pain, I am in "tengo negro debajo de ojos" phase.

I hope that tomorrow the smell of smoke will be gone from your nose, although if it's long like mine, it takes time.

😂😂😂

Well, then the smell will remind with me for a very long time 😂 longer than it would stay with you 😉

Gracias @nanixxx 🌟

I am not getting better, pero me puse a escribir... well, at least here, in the piano section.

Ponte bien ya!

I can't concentrate thinking about the X marked on that music sheet (partitura).

Deporte, evento, concierto? Bueno, no me digas ahora, quizás lo vemos 😉

Joking and Laughing while the building is on Fire?!
...
ok
...
😆😆😆
...
my story (a small one & very much in summary mode): I never was in a building with something in the building on fire. I've experienced an explosion, a chemical tanker (a smallish one, for the rivers, 2500 tons load); From about 30 meters away. The only thing I lost was my eyebrows 👁
...
jerry lee lewis: didn't he set his piano on fire while on stage? as a matter of speaking as well as literally?
...

Yes, hahah, what else could we do?

Well, there were ideas to jump to the roof of one of the restaurants that is under his apartment. But that would not be suitable for my age anymore 😂

Your story - chemical tanker? Explosion? Ow, you were lucky to lose just your eyebrow. Seems you have been involved in some dangerous chemical adventures.

...

😂

Checked now Jerry Lee Lewis, but just quickly, Miss Migraine killed me yesterday (literally) and I am just getting back slowly to this world... so maybe he indeed did it, set on fire the piano. There are musicians of all kinds ;)

killed me yesterday (literally)

I want your method to re-emerge amongst us, the living souls. So far, I only saw in movies the possibility to become alive again after one died. But you seem to have a trick for this that works outside the movies.

Sooooo sorry for that joke, but you went extreme with combining the words 'killed' and 'literally' 😌

Jerry... well click me for instance. At the bottom the clip from the movies about his life. Didn't find an original image that quickly with his piano on fire though.

Owwww, an original recording of his 'Great Balls of Fire song. No fire in the literal sense though. But figurately, definitely FIRE 😉

😂

Don't be sorry for the joke, fun is needed!! And indeed, the literally word maybe came on purpose there as a mental exercise, to see where it can lead the conversation about dead and living people world ;). Perfect as it was approached with more jokes. Also, as you mentioned it with the piano in fire, so I used the word. But also, it wasn't that far from the truth, this episode was stronger than all those from the whole last year 😑 So, just believe me, compared to yesterday, even if I am still not at 100%, I definitely can feel that huge gap between dead - alive state. With or without movie tricks 😉

Read the article you left here, so seems that he did it indeed. Poor piano, damaging it because he was annoyed (as Chuck Berry was chosen to close the night’s show).
Also, here could come the video that I shared with you some time ago, of the guy who did that DIY thing with an old upright piano. Every played note resulted in giving a spark. 😆

Owwww 'the worst episode of last year' - did you change anything? Coffee drinking, albeit decaf? `writing less 'StV' posts perhaps? What can be the trigger... the search must be on 😉

could come the video

But it didn't? 😆😆😆

Coffee drinking, albeit decaf?

Yes, I am full back with regular coffee intake on daily basis 😔 + when headache I take pills instead of CBD/dark room/techniques of tunneling the pain away/sleeping methods. + I know I should have more water intake. + You have to publish hive posts more often ;D

A scary situation for sure. I'm not sure that I would have gone back to the apartment with the smell of smoke around, but things worked out. We just watched Titanic again, probably for the 6th time. Every time I see this movie I wonder how the musicians stayed so calm. I'm sure that not one of them survived.

We had no other option, and it is actually scary that there are no outside stairs in this building, in case of fire. Unbelievable.
How the musicians stayed calm - I think it goes with the profession. My teacher used to say to me that whatever happens if a fly comes to my nose while I play at a concert, or anything else, I have to continue without paying attention to the distractions 😆
