Create your own board game

avatar

It's interesting that when you have so much to deal with, important things and when you really need to focus, other completely different and irrelevant activities come to your mind. Is it called procrastination?

I suppose.

However, I can blame Hive 😁 and the little inspiration I got from one post I saw the other day. It was a mom who posted about the activities her son was doing during the summer break. Games, puzzles, chess, crosswords... how cool is that when you are a child and can play like that...

Eureka! We can do it too!! Why not? Let's awaken the inner child within us and make something out of nothing. Maybe we need paper to write or draw, some pencils, colours, scissors, a piece of cardboard and transparent duct tape. That was the plan at the beginning, just use these things and avoid making a lot of mess...

IMG_20240725_154604.jpg

Hmmm... that part of avoiding making a lot of mess was messed up! 😂

I had a good time anyway although after I finished this little project I had to clean up the chaos. So, this afternoon, instead of doing all the other super-important stuff I let myself create a board game for my little students. Something like this:

IMG_20240229_215239.jpg

These were the previous board games that I drew for the little ones, the biggest one already several years ago. The goal is to have fun while learning music; you know, I also like to have fun while teaching so I often participate as a player in these handmade board games. 😆

So, the new one started as a piece of paper that I cut to the size of the yellow cardboard. The cardboard will be the base when I finish drawing the game on the paper.

IMG_20240725_155045.jpg

I didn't use any ruler to make these lines, it's all a freestyle thing 😁, although I used a small duck tape as a measure for the circles. They will mark the starting point and the end of the game.

IMG_20240725_155618.jpg

The lines were transformed into paths and little boxes with musical signs. Every box represents one measure of four beats which the players have to read correctly. We will have dice and game pawns to move on this board. In the starting box, I placed a little creature showing the time signature: 4/4.

IMG_20240725_160631.jpg

This is the moment I finished writing down the rhythm for each box (measure). The end is another little character holding a heart as it is glad we read the rhythmical patterns and arrived at the end successfully. 😇

IMG_20240725_185856.jpg

The board would not stay uncoloured, of course. I brought more colours, so the fun could start. You remember my first photo where I thought those colours would be enough? Well, this is the moment when everything went into chaos at the table!

IMG_20240725_161505.jpg

I started colouring the boxes but then I realized I should erase the written musical signs... The graphite from the pencil left a dirty mark in the bright colours. So, I erased each field, painted it, and then rewrote the rhythm that was written earlier. Fun, right? 😂

IMG_20240725_162548.jpg

Getting there slowly... It started looking better.

IMG_20240725_164417.jpg

And once it was finished, with every box coloured, and the characters also got their dresses, it looked like this:

IMG_20240725_171642.jpg

But wait, you need to see the mess around it! So, the complete picture would be something like the following scene. A real crime scene! Yeah, I had to clean it later.

IMG_20240725_195217.jpg

As the final step, I used a wide duct tape to stick together the paper with the yellow cardboard + to cover the whole game with it. I did it in parts, line by line until it got completely covered and protected. I took this photo just to show its shiny surface.

Any child around who would like to learn music during the summer break?

Here you go, this is a little idea you can vary as you want and make something for your children, or with them - together.

Your turn!

At a quavering pace I advance to the rhythm when on the way a pause stops me. It is possible to make it digital, that the card is magnetic and when passing through each square the player must play the rhythm by ear. I like it.

The combination of beats and pauses, pitch and harmony... the result is magic that we call music 🎶

I love board games, I think this is an excellent and fun way to learn, in this case music, but it can be used for any subject, it's really nice 😍

I'm still a kid with board games haha I have a collection (wink wink 😉) hehe

With didactic games, children learn easily. Excellent idea. Nice and very practical. Congratulations @mipiano 😘

That's why children learn quicker than we do, through playing their interest is higher. Thank you Mamani, may you have a nice day 😇

Así es :)

At first it looked similar to the snake board game but then I saw there are no stairs to get you back, it is just going on with sweet music...

Remember everyone has a child inside so age limit isn't necessary to learn music 😁

I guess it is indeed similar to a snake board game, though in a basic version, without stairs or ladders 🙂

What a great thing you’ve made there. I’m eager to teach our grandchildren music but they’re in good company as our kids, their parents both learnt music at school, took part in it outside of school too. Looking forward to the day we let them loose on our electric piano or one of my keyboards.

Hey @nicklewis

How cool that your children also learned music, music runs in the family many times as they say ;) The little ones like to explore the sound while trying out different keys and ways of playing them haha, I hope you will enjoy that stage and guide them a little bit too, their creativity + your guidance will bring happy musical moments :)))

I’m not officially qualified as a teacher or anything like that but know enough to get them going. They’ll learn at school and can later choose to with teachers who can educate them on different instruments.

You brought back so many memories today!!!! With my brother when we were kids we invented games, not with music but with cards and activities... those things and we had a lot of fun!!!! It was super cool!😍

You have been creative since an early age 😇, you see through playing and creating games for ourselves as children we also developed that artistic side in us. ✨

Wow, what an incredible work. I believe it's more fun and interesting having this handmade board game. Learning while having fun with everyone.

My little students simply love these handmade games, they prefer these to the ones everyone can buy. These are special, imperfect but made for them - it gives a different touch.

We all have a child inside and as the craftsman that I am, it is relaxing to make that mess to enjoy the making process. The important thing is to enjoy and have fun. Your game turned out beautifully, how nice that you did this for your students. Thank you for sharing your creative process and experience in the community. Greetings beautiful @mipiano 🥰

What we need many times is to do these things, to enjoy the process even if we later have to clean up the mess haha. Thank you @dayadam, the board game is now sleeping in the drawer until September when the school will start.

I remember a pianist who counted her steps (with measures from a Chopin etude) as she went to a place some Saturday evenings. She was younger in age, I think, but she is still young today, in fact she is a child, who likes to play with her little students. 😉😄

¡Qué bonito juego has hecho, genia! No entiendo mucho o casi nada.

Hola Nanixxx, cómo estás? These are already advanced studies about music haha. Sí, todo correcto. También tenemos aquí la negra con puntillo, y la blanca con puntillo y silencio de la negra y blanca... pero no hace falta saber la teoría, es mejor disfrutar de la música en la forma en la que llega 🎶
