Between music and emotion: my trip to Brazil’s biggest city

19 hours of travel in total, 900 kilometers, and every second was worth it: I went to São Paulo.

This was my third time in Brazil’s largest city, but the first with the real intention of being a “tourist.” The main goal was to attend an amazing event that was happening: the Wanna Be Tour, which featured both national and international attractions (I’ll talk about that in more detail later).

And what caught my attention the most on this first impression of São Paulo? Well, the city is simply incredible. Every corner seems to fight for your attention. It’s beautiful in every way, and maybe on previous visits I hadn’t realized just how wonderful this place is. I left with a strong desire to return — maybe even to live there someday...

As I mentioned, it took a little over 8 hours of travel to get to São Paulo — a tiring journey. We left our city, Juiz de Fora, around 9 p.m. and arrived at 6 a.m. The São Paulo bus terminal is huge!

Essa foi a terceira vez que estive na maior cidade do Brasil, mas a primeira com a intenção de realmente “turistar”. O objetivo principal foi participar de um evento incrível que estava acontecendo: o Wanna Be Tour, que contava com atrações nacionais e internacionais (sobre o qual vou falar mais detalhadamente depois).

E o que mais me chamou a atenção nesse primeiro impacto de São Paulo? Bem, a cidade é simplesmente incrível. Cada canto parece querer disputar sua atenção. É linda em todos os aspectos e, talvez, nas vezes anteriores eu não tenha percebido o quanto esse lugar é maravilhoso. Saí de lá com vontade de voltar, quem sabe até morar ali um dia...

Como mencionei, foram pouco mais de 8 horas de viagem até chegar a São Paulo, uma jornada cansativa. Saímos da nossa cidade, Juiz de Fora, por volta das 9 horas da noite e chegamos às 6 da manhã. A rodoviária de São Paulo é enorme!

Right from the start, I was amazed by the urban scenery this place offers. I’m not using empty words when I say that every part of the city competes for your attention. Everything is impressive, and the urban organization is also surprising: the city is clean, at least in most of the areas I passed through. My impression was extremely positive within the very first minutes there.

Logo no início, fiquei maravilhado com o cenário urbano que esse lugar proporciona. Não estou usando palavras vazias quando digo que cada pedaço da cidade disputa sua atenção. Tudo é impressionante, e a organização urbana também surpreende: a cidade é limpa, pelo menos na maior parte por onde passei. A impressão foi extremamente positiva já nos primeiros minutos por ali.

This was the first time I ever set foot in a soccer stadium. It wasn’t the stadium of my favorite team, nor was it to watch a match, but even so, this first experience will be remembered fondly. The event was well organized, and there were no negative points worth mentioning — the overall impression was completely positive.

Essa foi a primeira vez que pisei em um estádio de futebol. Não foi o estádio do meu time do coração, nem para assistir a uma partida, mas, ainda assim, essa primeira experiência ficará guardada com carinho. O evento foi bem organizado e não houve pontos negativos que mereçam ser mencionados — a impressão foi totalmente positiva.

So, once we were settled in our seats, we had 13 hours of shows ahead of us, with a total of 12 bands. Many of them are part of my current playlist, and several were a big part of my emo teenage years. Among the international acts were Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard, Story Of The Year, The Maine, The Veronicas, and Neck Deep. The Brazilian bands included Fresno, Forfun, Dead Fish, Gloria, and Fake Number.

Então, já acomodados em nossos assentos, tínhamos pela frente 13 horas de shows, com um total de 12 bandas. Muitas delas fazem parte da minha playlist atual, e várias marcaram minha adolescência emo. Entre as atrações internacionais estavam Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard, Story Of The Year, The Maine, The Veronicas e Neck Deep. Já as bandas brasileiras incluíam Fresno, Forfun, Dead Fish, Gloria e Fake Number.

It was incredible!

This was a gift from me to my girlfriend: on that stage, her favorite band played — one that hadn’t been to Brazil in 25 years. Good Charlotte, a band I also like a lot, was by far the best show of the event. And, as they themselves said during the performance: “This was the best show of my entire life.” Yes, Joel Madden, we shared that same feeling.

Foi incrível!

Esse foi um presente meu para minha namorada: nesse palco tocou a banda favorita dela, que não vinha ao Brasil há 25 anos. Good Charlotte, uma banda que eu também gosto muito, foi disparadamente o melhor show do evento. E, como eles mesmos disseram durante a apresentação: “Esse foi o melhor show de toda a minha vida”. Sim, Joel Madden, nós também compartilhamos desse sentimento.

The feeling that remained? A sense of fulfillment and an immense desire to return. One of the best memories I will carry with me for the rest of my life — it was incredible!
