From Latch to Promises: My Sam Smith Essentials [Eng/Esp]

I haven't been here in a while, but today I felt like writing to you because I started listening to some songs by an artist who, in my opinion, has an incredible voice and a talent that moves me. I'm talking about Sam Smith.

Tenía un ratito sin pasar por acá, pero hoy me dieron ganas de escribirles porque me puse a escuchar unas canciones de un artista que, para mí, tiene una voz increíble y un talento que emociona. Se trata de Sam Smith.

It's funny, because when I was little I used to sing his songs without having any idea who he was. I just knew that I loved that voice. Now, however, it's impossible not to recognize him as soon as he sings in any song.

So today I want to share some of my favorite songs by this artist with you.

Es curioso, porque cuando era pequeña solía cantar sus canciones sin tener idea de quién era. Solo sabía que esa voz me encantaba. Ahora, en cambio, es imposible no reconocerla apenas suena en cualquier canción.

Así que hoy quiero compartirles algunas de mis canciones favoritas de este artista.

🎧 Latch

Although technically not a Sam Smith song (it's by the duo Disclosure, the geniuses behind the beat), his voice is what gives the whole song its soul. Back then (2012), Sam wasn't that well known yet, but Latch was a turning point.

The lyrics talk about that magical moment when you're falling madly in love. That intense, almost electric moment when you feel like you need to cling to that person so you don't fly away. Literally, latch on, ha ha ha.

Aunque técnicamente no es una canción de Sam Smith (es del dúo Disclosure, los genios detrás del beat), su voz es la que le da alma a toda la canción. En ese entonces (2012), Sam aún no era tan conocido, pero Latch fue un antes y un después.

La letra habla de ese instante mágico en el que te estás enamorando perdidamente. Ese momento intenso y casi eléctrico en el que sientes que necesitas aferrarte a esa persona para no salir volando. Literalmente, latch on jasjaja.

🎧 Dancing With a Stranger

A collaboration with Normani (who at that time was formerly of Fifth Harmony), which I love for its soft and enveloping vibe.

The song talks about that emptiness that remains after a breakup, when you still haven't gotten over your ex, but you can't stand being alone with your thoughts either. It's that urge to go out, to distract yourself, to dance with a stranger just so you don't feel so broken inside.

And I like it so much because it has that R&B touch that makes it even more addictive.

Una colaboración con Normani (quien para ese momento era ex Fifth Harmony), que me encanta por su vibra suave y envolvente.

La canción habla de ese vacío que queda después de una ruptura, cuando aún no superas a tu ex, pero tampoco soportas quedarte solo con tus pensamientos. Es ese impulso de salir, de distraerte, de bailar con un extraño solo para no sentirte tan roto por dentro.

Y me gusta tanto porque tiene ese toque de R&B que la hace aún más adictiva.

🎧 I'm Not the Only One

I've always felt that this song hits you right in the heart, even if you've never been in that situation yourself.

It's about betrayal, that moment when you know (even if no one tells you) that the person you love is no longer fully with you.
The way Sam sings this story of infidelity is so honest, so heartbreaking, that it's impossible not to feel a lump in your throat.

Siempre he sentido que esta canción es un golpe directo al corazón, incluso si ni siquera has vivido esa situación.

Habla de la traición, de ese momento en que sabes (aunque nadie te lo diga) que la persona que amas ya no está contigo del todo.
La forma en que Sam canta esta historia de infidelidad es tan honesta, tan desgarradora, que es imposible no sentir un nudo en la garganta.

A collaboration with Calvin Harris that has a more electronic vibe. But if you pay attention to the lyrics, there's a hidden melancholy.

It talks about promises made in the middle of the night, when everything seems easier, but that may not be kept by dawn. It's a perfect mix of euphoria and vulnerability, and that's what makes it special.

Una colaboración con Calvin Harris que tiene un ritmo más electrónico. Pero si prestas atención a la letra, hay una melancolía escondida.

Habla de promesas que se hacen en medio de la noche, cuando todo parece más fácil, pero que tal vez no se cumplirán al amanecer. Es una mezcla perfecta entre euforia y vulnerabilidad, y eso la hace especial.
