For some time now, I've been wanting to review this song by Olivia. It's a song that fits Lucy Gray's story perfectly. Olivia understood the assignment very well. I don't know if she read the book to get a broader view of Lucy Gray's story, or if she just watched the movie. In any case, the song is spectacular and accomplishes its task, fitting perfectly with her character's story.
Let's start off by saying that I'm actually excited to talk about this song. I also want to tell you that there are spoilers for The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, so if you haven't seen the movie and don't want to spoil it for yourself, be on your way.

Can't Catch Me Now is written from the point of view of our beloved protagonist of The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Lucy Gray. The story of this song is about how Lucy is finally free, and now she can't be caught. I will tell you a little bit about Lucy Gray's story, as everything in this song fits together perfectly. She was the chosen female tribute from district 12, then she meets Snow, her mentor and later her boyfriend. He helps her win the 10th Hunger Games. They were "in love," and one day they decided to run away together, but Snow missed a little detail that puts our protagonist on alert. She senses danger and tells him she's going to fetch Katniss, an aquatic plant that grows around District 12. She leaves, and Snow becomes very paranoid. In the end, Snow loses his mind and tries to murder her in the woods.
The movie and the book leave us with an open ending as to what may have happened to Lucy Gray. Some believe that Snow killed her in the forest, and others believe that she managed to escape. My theory is that he does manage to murder her, and this song is Lucy talking about how he can't catch her now and how he thinks it's all over because of that, but in reality it's not over because she torments him in his thoughts. He sees her in the trees, in the breeze, in his city, everywhere, and the end of the song tells us that it's not over yet. Connecting this song to the other movies is true; the last time Snow saw Lucy, she went to find Katniss (swamp potato), and 65 years later, she brings her, Katniss from district 12, who is the beginning of his end.
Overall, this is a song about freedom—what Lucy Gray had always wanted and arguably got, she is now far away from Snow's grasp, he can no longer catch her. Considering that Snow never really loved her (this is more noticeable in the book than in the movie), but rather saw her as an object to possess and use to his advantage, it is good that she is now free of him. But at the same time, she suffocates him with her memory, and no matter how hard he tried to bury all traces of her, nothing was enough to erase her from his memory.
In this song, several interesting details can be appreciated:
- Harmonies: The harmonies in the song are perfect and create a unique atmosphere that complements Olivia's lyrics and style.
- Olivia's breathing: Olivia has excellent control over her breathing. I love how, during the song, we can appreciate how she takes breaths. Everything in the song is intentional, and this detail with the breathing makes many comment that it's because Lucy ran in the woods and was out of breath. That's why Olivia sings many times as if she were short of breath. I think this detail is great.
- Haunting Lyrics: The song's lyrics are incredible and haunting, especially given the mystery surrounding Lucy Gray. Is she alive? Did she manage to escape? Did Snow kill her? We can only guess what her fate was.
- Olivia's voice: In my other writings, I've mentioned how good Olivia is at conveying feelings through her voice. She doesn't just sing; she feels the lyrics, and here you can appreciate how, as the song progresses, Olivia sings harder, and you feel the rage, especially in the bridge. You can feel Lucy Gray's rage.
