Hacía muchísimo tiempo que no me emocionaba escuchar música mainstream, me parecía todo bastante básico y cada vez que salía un nuevo artista pop para mí era todo más de lo mismo. Sin embargo hace unos años esa perspectiva cambió totalmente cuando encontré por casualidad un día en Youtube un video de Billie Eilish que por fin me emocionó. Seguía siendo pop pero tenía cierto toque alternativo que realmente me encantó. Por eso en este post les hablaré de su álbum debut When we all fall asleep, where do we go? (“Cuando nos quedamos dormidos, ¿a dónde vamos?”)
It’s been a long time since I was excited to listen to mainstream music, it all seemed pretty basic to me and every time a new pop artist came out it was just more of the same to me. However, a few years ago that perspective changed completely when I found by chance one day on YouTube avideo by Billie Eilish that finally excited me. It was still pop but had a certain alternative feel that I really loved. That's why in this post I will tell you about her debut album When we all fall asleep, where do we go?
Este álbum es pop alternativo, también conocido como avant-pop por lo que tiene muchas influencias de distintos géneros como el hip-hop, electro, entre otros. La música de Billie es una fusión de varias cosas que no dejan de ser mainstream, pero por ser un popurrí de géneros suena tan distinto que es irremediablemente llamativo. A pesar de haber sido publicado en el 2019 este álbum estuvo en proceso durante varios años. Pero no te imagines un gran estudio con un grupo de productores profesionales, nada que ver. Fue grabado en la habitación del hermano de Billie, Finneas O’Connell quien es su productor. Ambos siendo básicamente unos niños (ella tenía unos 17 años, él unos 22) lograron aprender cómo crear y producir su propia música por lo que en conjunto escribieron este álbum.
This album is alternative pop, also known as avant-pop so it has many influences from different genres such as hip-hop, electro, among others. Billie's music is a fusion of several things that are still mainstream, but because it is a medley of genres it sounds so different that it is irredeemably striking. Despite having been published in 2019, this album was in the works for several years. But don't imagine a big studio with a group of professional producers, non of that. It was recorded in the room of Billie's brother, Finneas O'Connell, who is her producer. Both of them being basically children (she was about 17, he was around 22) managed to learn how to create and produce their own music, so together they wrote this album.
Billie ha dicho que está inspirado en sueños lúcidos y terrores nocturnos, y esto realmente se ve claramente en las letras de las canciones e incluso en la portada del álbum. Por supuesto, los temas son abordados desde una perspectiva de adolescentes y es evidente puesto que ellos eran unos adolescentes que expresaban sus ideas a través de su música. Así que no necesariamente esperes letras profundas, simplemente son emociones que son reales, que muchos adolescentes viven y que de alguna forma Billie y Finneas supieron convertir en algo de arte. Para mí son todas increíblemente buenas por lo que daré mi opinión de cada una
Billie has said that it is inspired by lucid dreams and night terrors, and this really comes across clearly in the lyrics of the songs and even on the album cover. Of course, the topics are approached from a teenage perspective and it is evident since they were teenagers who expressed their ideas through their music. So don't necessarily expect deep lyrics, they are simply emotions that are real, that many teenagers experience and that somehow Billie and Finneas knew how to turn into some kind of art. For me they are all incredibly good so I will give my opinion on each one.
1.- !!!!!!!
This is a kind of intro to the album. It's just Billie and Finneas talking and laughing. Honestly, I see this intro as quite unnecessary, but it is true that it is in line with the carefree tone of what is actually the first song on the album. Luckily this part was not integrated into that song because in my opinion it would have ruined it. At least they put it separately so I could skip it without problems.
1.- !!!!!!!
Esta es una especie de intro del álbum. Es simplemente Billie junto a Finneas hablando y riendo. Honestamente yo veo esta intro bastante innecesaria, pero sí es cierto que va acorde con el tono despreocupado de la que es en realidad la primera canción del álbum. Por suerte esta parte no fue integrada con esa canción porque en mi opinión la habría arruinado. Al menos la pusieron separada para así poder saltarla sin problemas.
2.- Bad Guy
Do you want catchy music? This is just the song you are looking for. From the beginning it makes you want to dance, even mumble its melody. It is happy, carefree, with production arrangements that are perfect to give it more color and accompany Billie's soft voice, apart from the bass that is there from the beginning ans it’s simply great. The lyrics speak as the name well says “a bad guy” who is bad only in appearance, so the lyrics is a kind of mockery to that person. It's really a nice song to listen to.
¿Quieres música pegajosa? Esta es justo la canción que buscas. Desde el inicio te hace querer bailar, incluso murmurar su melodía. Es alegre, despreocupada, con arreglos de producción que quedan perfectos para darle más color y acompañar la voz suave de Billie, aparte el bajo que está desde el inicio es simplemente genial. La letra habla como bien dice su nombre de “un chico malo” que de malo no tiene más que la apariencia, así que es una especie de mofa. Realmente es una canción agradable de escuchar.
3.- Xanny
Its name comes from an abbreviation or nickname of the drug Xanax which is a sedative drug used mainly to treat anxiety, but of course there are people who do not use it for that purpose. In this song Billie talks about drugs, about how there are people who are not able to have fun if there are no substances involved, which of course slowly destroys them. She wanted, as she commented in an interview, to sound soft, “like smoke,” and her voice achieves that perfectly by sounding almost like a whisper, which is the most characteristic thing about her style, but in this song it is accentuated. She sounds simply beautiful.
The video for this song is great because despite being quite simple, working mostly with the camera angles, it captures that feeling of calm even though the subject matter of the lyrics is actually quite sensitive. Something that is great about Billie's art is that she makes sure that the videos are in total harmony with the songs and this video of course achieves that
3.- Xanny
Su nombre viene de una abreviación o sobrenombre de la droga Xanax la cual es un fármaco sedante utilizado principalmente para tratar la ansiedad, pero por supuesto hay personas que no lo utilizan con ese fin. En esta canción Billie habla de drogas, de cómo hay personas que no son capaces de divertirse si no hay sustancias de por medio, lo cual por supuesto los va destruyendo lentamente. Ella quería según comentó en una entrevista sonar suave, “como el humo”, y su voz logra eso perfectamente al sonar casi como un susurro que es lo más característico de su estilo, pero en esta canción se ve acentuado. Suena simplemente hermosa.
El video de esta canción es genial porque a pesar de ser bastante sencillo trabajando más que nada los ángulos de la cámara, captura esa sensación de calma a pesar de que el tema de la letra es en realidad bastante delicado. Algo que es genial del arte de Billie es que se asegura que los videos vayan en total consonancia con las canciones y este video por supuesto lo logra
4.- You Should See Me in a Crown
This song has a mix between pop and trap with an alternative touch that is great. You can't really put it into a single genre. The lyrics talk about someone who is narcissistic, with a lot of ego, who believes he is the king of the world with or without a crown. I remember reading that Billie and Finneas were inspired by a scene in the Sherlock series where they say the phrase “honey, you should see me in a crown.” It was a challenging and cynical phrase so they developed the rest from that idea. I think the trap vibe turned out great for it.
Apart from that, the video where Billie appears with a crown and a tarantula coming out of her mouth is simply brilliant.
4.- You Should See Me in a Crown “Deberías verme con una corona”
Esta canción tiene mezcla entre pop y trap con un toque alternativo que es genial. Realmente no la puedes encasillar en un género. La letra habla de alguien narcisista, con mucho ego que se cree el rey del mundo con corona o sin ella. Recuerdo haber leído que Billie y Finneas se inspiraron en una escena de la serie Sherlock donde dicen la frase “cariño, deberías verme con una corona”. Era una frase retadora y cínica por lo que a partir de esa idea desarrollaron el resto. Creo que con la vibra de trap les quedó genial.
Aparte el video donde aparece Billie con una corona y una tarantula saliendo de su boca es simplemente genial.
5.- All The Good Girls Go To Hell
”My Lucifer is lonely”...
Obviously the theme is religion, the message is basically that it doesn't matter if you are good or bad, if hell exists we will all go there because "there is nothing to save." It is as if God has given up trying to lead his creation on the right path, so he abandons us to our fate. It is an atheist or rather agnostic point of view and what I love the most is the carefree tone of the lyrics, voice and production, as if they were laughing at a joke. The bass is great, the melody is super catchy and it has a very nice groove.
The video is evidently in line and, in fact, is quite creepy. So you wanna know what I mean, you have to watch it.
5.- All The Good Girls Go To Hell “Todas las chicas buenas van al infierno”
”Mi Lucifer está solitario”...
Evidentemente la temática es religión, el mensaje es básicamente que no importa si eres bueno o malo, si el infierno existe todos iremos allá porque “no hay nada que salvar”. Es como si Dios se hubiera rendido intentando llevar a su creación por el buen camino, por lo cual los abandona a su suerte. Es un punto de vista ateo o más bien agnóstico y lo que me encanta es el tono despreocupado de la letra, voz y producción,como si se estuvieran riendo de un chiste. El bajo es genial, la melodía súper pegajosa y tiene un groove muy agradable.
El video evidentemente va en consonancia y de hecho, es bastante espeluznante. Para que sepas a que me refiero, tienes que verlo
It's a more pop and R&B song, super simple and catchy. However, at the time it was quite controversial because of its lyrics since some people thought it was homophobic. But Billie explained that it was quite the opposite, one of the lines even says so (“I just kinda wish you were gay to spare my pride”). The singer's intention was to express that when a boy rejected her, she would have liked him to be gay and that would have been the reason for his rejection and not the fact that he simply did not like her. The truth is that the controversy was quite silly but honestly the lyrics are too. I don't know who told Billie that was a clever analogy but it's not lol.
Of course, it's still a super catchy song that I like to hum now and then.
6.- Wish You Were Gay “Desearía que fueras gay”
Es una canción más pop y R&B, súper sencilla y pegajosa. Sin embargo, en el momento fue bastante controversial por su letra puesto que algunas personas pensaron que era homófoba. Pero Billie explicó que era más bien todo lo contrario, incluso una de las frases lo dice (“medio desearía que fueras gay para compartir mi orgullo”). La intención de la cantante era expresar que ante el rechazo de un chico le hubiera gustado que fuera gay y ese hubiera sido el motivo del rechazo y no el hecho de que simplemente no gustaba de ella. La verdad la controversia fue bastante tonta pero honestamente la letra también lo es. No sé quién le dijo a Billie que era una analogía inteligente pero no lo es jajaja.
Eso sí, igual sigue siendo una canción súper pegajosa que me encanta tararear.
It is a soft and sad song. It talks about a broken heart that did everything possible for a love that was not reciprocated. It's basically a ballad that with Billie's whispering voice is really beautiful, to the point of being able to make you cry. The production also helps make it great as it arranges vocals that are beautiful, building up the strength of the lead vocal but not making it sound too loud. It's a great song that has an equally good video as a complement.
7.-When the Party’s Over “Cuando se termina la fiesta”
Es una canción suave y triste. Habla de un corazón roto que hizo todo lo posible por un amor que no fue correspondido. Es básicamente una ballada que con la voz susurrante de Billie queda realmente hermosa, al punto de poder hacerte llorar. La producción también ayuda a que sea genial puesto que hace arreglos con voces que son hermosos, aumentando la fuerza de la voz principal pero sin que suene demasiado alta. Es una canción genial que tiene como complemento un video igual de bueno.
8.- “8”
“Wait a minute, let me finish. I know you don’t care but can you listen?”
It is a last plea or rather an emotional release from that heartbroken person who tries to make the other understand how his rejection felt and how she prefers to walk away because she simply does not know how to please him. It is quite catchy due to its almost childish melody, in fact the production makes the first verse of the voice sound like a little girl. It is a fairly simple song with that touch of alternative pop that is quite pleasant to listen to even though the lyrics are sad.
8.- “8”
“Espera un momento, déjame terminar. Sé que no te importa pero ¿puedes escucharme?”
Es una última súplica o más bien una descarga emocional de esa persona con el corazón roto que intenta hacerle entender al otro cómo se sintió su rechazo y como prefiere alejarse porque sencillamente no sabe cómo complacerlo. Es bastante pegajosa por su melodía casi infantil, de hecho la producción hace que el primer verso la voz suene como la de una niña pequeña. Es una canción bastante sencilla con ese toque de pop alternativo bastante agradable de escuchar a pesar de que la letra sea triste.
It talks about being obsessed with a person to the point that that platonic love has become a toxic addiction, almost like a poison. I love the song because despite touching on a sensitive topic because it is obviously a behavior that is wrong, the carefree way it sounds, that danceable and catchy rhythm is totally great. Even at the production level it has added audio parts from bits of conversations from a series (I think The Office), musical details that simply make it a very good song. It's one of my favorites on this album.
9.- My Strange Adicction “Mi extraña adicción”
Habla de estar obsesionado con una persona, al punto de que ese amor platónico se ha convertido en una tóxica adicción, casi como un veneno. Me encanta canción porque a pesar de tocar un tema delicado porque evidentemente es un comportamiento que está mal, la forma despreocupada con que suena, ese ritmo bailable y pegajoso, es totalmente genial. Incluso a nivel de producción tiene partes de audios agregados de series (creo que The Office), detalles musicales que simplemente la hacen una muy buena canción. Es de mis favoritas en este álbum.
10.- Bury a Friend
It's the darkest song, and you'll say dark pop? Well yes. I don't know how but Billie and Finneas managed to make this song sound almost like a nightmare even though the vocals are so sweet. It has arrangements that are more of a horror movie even including distorted vocals and heavy bass, but it's still pop. The lyrics are also a bit creepy since they talk about a kind of monster hidden under the bed, which is actually an analogy to the depression and anxiety that many people have to battle with but that can become your worst nightmare.
The video is precisely a totally nightmare scenario, with horror movie scenes that are wonderful.
10.- Bury a Friend “Entierra a un amigo”
Es la canción más oscura, y dirás ¿pop oscuro? Pues sí. No sé cómo pero Billie y Finneas lograron que esta canción sonara casi como una pesadilla a pesar de que la voz sea tan dulce. Tiene arreglos que son más bien de una película de terror incluso incluyendo voces distorsionadas y bajos fuertes, pero sigue siendo pop. La letra también es un tanto tenebrosa puesto que habla de una especie de monstruo escondido debajo de la cama, que en realidad es una analogía a la depresión y ansiedad con la que muchas personas deben batallar pero que puede convertirse en tu peor pesadilla.
El video es precisamente un escenario totalmente de pesadilla, con escenas de película de terror que es maravilloso.
11.- Ilomilo
It continues with that mysterious aura since the lyrics talk about someone who wants the company and protection of someone else, expressing that she is worried because she does not have that other person nearby. It has an almost childlike melody that sounds very delicate in the mix, with Billie's soft almost pleading voice and the bass that I really love on this and all the songs. By the way, “Ilomilo” is simply the name of a video game that Billie really liked.
11.- Ilomilo
Continúa con esa aura misteriosa puesto que la letra habla de alguien que desea la compañía y protección de alguien más, expresando que está preocupada porque no tiene a esa otra persona cerca. Tiene una melodía casi infantil que suena muy delicada en la mezcla, con la voz suave de Billie casi a modo de súplica y el bajo que realmente me encanta en esta y todas las canciones. Por cierto, “Ilomilo” es simplemente el nombre de un videojuego que le gustaba mucho a Billie.
12.- Listen Before I Go
For me it is the saddest song on the album since it talks about a person who is in a serious depressive state, so this is a kind of farewell where she asks for forgiveness from all those people she loves but can't help but leave. It is a very hard subject to touch on that is not meant to be heard by everyone but is really projected very well in this song. This song made me cry, it's just sad and beautiful.
12.- Listen Before I Go “Escucha antes de que me vaya”
Para mí es la canción más triste del álbum puesto que habla de una persona que se encuentra en un estado depresivo grave, por lo que esta es una especie de despedida donde pide perdón a todas aquellas personas que quiere pero que no puede evitar irse. Es un tema muy fuerte que no es para ser escuchado por todo el mundo pero que realmente es proyectado de forma muy buena en esta canción. Esta canción me hizo llorar, es simplemente triste y hermosa.
13.- I Love You
It is a ballad that only has the voice and an acoustic guitar. It's slow and beautiful, the voice sounds absolutely sweet and the scale reminds me of the verses of Hallelujah but obviously with its original touch. It is part of the previous farewell, full of regrets and things that one wishes they had done or said. Another song that makes me cry hahaha
13.- I Love You “Te amo”
Es una balada que sólo tiene la voz y una guitarra acústica. Es lenta y preciosa, la voz suena absolutamente dulce y la escala me recuerda a las estrofas de Hallelujah pero evidentemente con su toque original. Es parte de la despedida anterior, llena de arrepentimientos y cosas que se desearían haber hecho o dicho. Otra canción que me hace llorar jajaja
14.- Goodbye
The final farewell, a last goodbye. The album closes with a medley of phrases from all the previous songs as a kind of summary. It's an interesting concept as the closing of the album since it maintains the same alternative vibe in general, but honestly the same thing happens to me as with the first "song", I find it unnecessary. It's not something I've seen before but I honestly don't think it adds much to the album that could have ended with “I love you”. However, it's not that bad.
14.- Goodbye “Adiós”
La despedida final, un último adiós. El álbum cierra con un popurrí de frases de todas las canciones anteriores, como una especie de resumen. Es un concepto interesante como cierre del álbum puesto que mantiene la misma vibra alternativa en general, pero honestamente me ocurre lo mismo que con la primera “canción”, lo veo innecesario. No es algo que haya visto que hicieran antes pero la verdad no creo que aporte demasiado al álbum que pudo haber terminado con “I love you”. Sin embargo, no está tan mal.
Es más que evidente el impacto que tuvo Billie por ser algo nuevo, fuera de lo común en lo mainstream. Fue refrescante que alguien decidiera ponerle su propio toque a un género que ya se estaba tornando aburrido de escuchar. La música, las letras, los videos, incluso la presentación de la portada del álbum con su estética misteriosa y las presentaciones en vivo de la artista. Todo es alternativo y genial.
Aunque debo admitir que la mayor parte del éxito de Billie se debe al increíble talento de Finneas para la producción. Si él no supiera como trabajar la voz de ella ljunto a los demás arreglos instrumentales realmente no sería lo mismo. Puesto que la voz por sí sola es muy bonita pero después de escucharla mucho tiempo se vuelve monótona. Finneas hace magia con la producción y es gracias a él que Billie es la artista que es hoy en día.
It is more than evident the impact that Billie had for being something new, out of the ordinary in the mainstream. It was refreshing that someone decided to put her own spin on a genre that was already becoming boring to listen to. The music, the lyrics, the videos, even the presentation of the album cover with her mysterious aesthetic and the artist's live performances. Everything is alternative and great.Although I must admit that most of Billie's success is due to Finneas' incredible talent for production. If he didn't know how to work her voice along with the other instrumental arrangements it really wouldn't be the same. Since her voice alone is very beautiful but after listening to it for a long time it becomes monotonous. Finneas makes magic with the production and it is thanks to him that Billie is the artist she is today.

So if you want to listen to something different but still within the most popular genres of our time, Billie Eilish is an artist who undoubtedly marked the music industry and even though she is an international artist, she has a much bigger career ahead of her. This album is just the first small sample of that.
