Hi, dear Hive users!✨
¡Hola, queridos usuarios de Hive!✨
Inevitably I had to talk about Måneskin because it's an Italian rock band and it's mainstream. Yes, that kind of music that is heard on the radio. How is it possible that a band where the main language is Italian and the genre is so unpopular, have reached the big stages? Quite simple, their music is spectacular.
Damiano David, Thomas Raggi, Victoria De Angelis and Ethan Torchio are the members of this band. Between the four of them they compose the songs and write the lyrics since they were quite young (they still are), they all pursued that dream of dedicating to music and they achieved it in a fairly short time. Participating in shows such as The X Factor, festivals such as the Sanremo Song Festival 2020 and the renowned Eurovision in 2021, where they were the winners with their song Zitti e buoni . Måneskin clearly managed to stand out for their mix of genres between hard rock, pop rock and alternative, as well as their glam rock style and incredible stage presence. They were already rockstars before they really got be ones.
Måneskin (from Danish, meaning “moonlight”) has several great albums, but in this post I will focus on my favorite of all so far: Teatro d'ira: Vol. I («Theatre of anger: Volume I») and of course, it begins with that iconic Eurovision song:
1.- ZITTI E BUONI («CALLADOS Y TRANQUILOS»)
1.- ZITTI E BUONI ("CALM AND QUIET")
Hard rock at its best. Maximum energy that fully expresses the message of the lyrics, and that is that one of the things that stands out about this band are their lyrics that are carefully written and spectacular.
This song is basically a criticism of society and its system, where instead of being "quiet and calm" it is better to shout your opinion, making a scandal if necessary but not stop telling the truth and how rotten the current world is. They will call you crazy, but at least you are different from the rest.
Damiano's voice, being so expressive, goes perfectly in line with the style of the band as well as the genre and message of this song that can undoubtedly offend more than one person. There's a little bass solo that I love because giving this instrument some prominence is rare. The drum also stands out quite a bit. Actually there is no doubt why this song won the Eurovision ✨
2.- CORALINE
2.- CORALINE
This is one of my favorite songs on the album, it's just beautiful. It has a slow start with voice, guitar and bass and then gradually gains strength until the drums begin to enter and finally the explosion of the entire band in the chorus. The rest of the song plays with this scheme, between slow and a bit more powerful that is characteristic of a hard rock ballad.
I think Damiano's voice is more expressive than ever and the lyrics are quite sentimental and raw, telling the story of Coraline, a girl who has grown up in a place full of traumas and who is now afraid of the world no matter how much she wants to get out to explore in its immensity. Not only does the voice highlight the drama of the lyrics, but the guitar solo also complements it perfectly, so much so that it feels exaggeratedly short.
3.- LIVIDI SUI GOMITI ("BRUISES ON ELBOWS")
They continue with hard rock with a touch of groove that even makes you want to dance. Although of course, little by little the energy grows until we close with a kind of solo where the main chords are repeated. It is pure energy that they complement with the lyrics that talks about daring to speak and be noticed after having endured the abuses and impositions of society. It talks about being brave since we grew up in a hostile place, so the stereotypes and prejudices of a decadent society no longer matter.
Although I love the lyrics, I must admit that the instrumental part is somewhat repetitive for me, so it is not one of the songs that I repeat frequently. It's not bad at all, it's just not one of my favorites.
4.- I WANNA BE YOUR SLAVE («QUIERO SER TU ESCLAVO»)
Yes, Måneskin also writes songs in English. On the other hand, it is already clear that the band is not at all politically correct and quite rebellious, so not all their songs have transcendental lyrics or with a significant message. Some are only to be enjoyed, danced to or to laugh with the lyrics and that is the case with I wanna be your slave.
Mixture of hard rock and pop rock that makes you want to dance because of its groove because obviously what stands out is the rhythmic part. It's cool and gives off a good mood, kind of carefree vibe; precisely the lyrics are more carefree, they talk about sex in the form of analogies, rebellion and with a touch of inconsistencies written on purpose just for the sake of it😅. That's Måneskin and I have to admit I love this song.
5.- IN NOME DEL PADRE ("IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER")
Hard rock again with quite a lot of energy from the first second, even the voice sounds aggressive. This is because the lyrics tell us about someone who stopped trying to fit in with social standards, thus accepting his true self, so now the rest of the world must see what he really is without meddling in his business. It also deludes religion (as seen in the name) so it can easily offend believers, but for those with different opinions it's spectacular.
Halfway through the song there is a rhythmic bridge that highlights the bass and where the climax of the lyrics occurs, to end with a guitar solo that is totally epic. Another wonderful song.
6.- FOR YOUR LOVE («POR TU AMOR»)
6.- FOR YOUR LOVE
A peculiarly "romantic" song. The lyrics speak more of a lustful love but hey! It says "I'll do whatever you want for your love", so it's kind of romantic, isn't it? 😂 Obviously not, but it's a fun and great song as it's a bit heavier pop rock that also has its groove touches. Even the voice encourages that at the same time that it is very consistent with the theme.
Besides the guitar solo is sublime. Thomas Raggi is a talented and exceptional guitarist.
7.- LA PAURA DEL BUIO («EL MIEDO A LA OSCURIDAD»)
Otra de mis favoritas. Es completamente espectacular, todo destaca. Instrumental, voz y letra. Invita a bailarla toda.
7.- LA PAURA DEL BUIO ("FEAR OF THE DARK")
Another one of my favourites. It is completely spectacular, everything stands out. Instrumental, voice and lyrics. It has a lot of groove, I think the one that has it the most since even the voice contributes that, it is also maintained throughout the entire song. Invite everyone to dance. Particularly despite not dedicating myself to music so I don't know much about it, it seems to me that the bass is the instrument with the greatest prominence. It is the most listened to among all and that is rare, at least for me.
And what does the lyrics talk about? Well, of courage that to a certain point becomes indifference. It talks about a person who has been hurt so many times that now he feels that he is not afraid of anything, not even the dark, so that the rest of the people can do whatever, he does not care at all. It no longer matters, the only thing that is certain is that all those who hurt him will return repentant.
In the end we are left only with Damiano's incredible voice, which is so expressive that it provides a spectacular dramatic ending✨
8.- VENT'ANNI ("TWENTY YEARS")
After so much energy they close the album with a ballad, which I consider to be the perfect ending. Since despite the fact that the main theme of the album is anger, it is evidently accompanied by a certain sadness due to all that has been suffered and all that has been lost. In the lyrics, an attempt is made to give a certain explanation to anger where it is reflected that it is one of the many mistakes that some kids who "are only twenty years old" have, for which they apologize for their drama and the things that they have done and also things that are to be done.
What we hear in this song is soft and sad, even the voice sounds sweeter. All the instrumentals and the voice generate an atmosphere of melancholy and farewell that is highlighted by a guitar solo in the good style of old rock ballads. It's the kind of songs where in a concert you would see the audience turning on lighters or the lights on their phones holding them up and moving their arms slowly while singing at the top of their lungs 🌠
The reflection is that the path of life, especially for today's youth, is uncertain and ambiguous, so they try to do the best they can, prioritizing what is truly important, so they do not have to give too many explanations. Although it seems that a young person is a nobody and that can hurt, if you stay different from others then you will be someone... But you are only in your twenties.
I think this album is the perfect way to rise to fame. It is not the first of the band but it is the one that would be published after winning Eurovision and with it they not only won several awards, nominations and international recognition, but they perfectly demonstrated who they are and their particular style, which is refreshing considering what is considered popular nowadays.Honestly I can't find any flaw in this album apart from the fact that it is very short. 29 minutes is not enough for me😅 luckily there are more albums to enjoy.
I love the chosen aesthetic and concept, since "the theater" represents the way they provide art to the listener, however theaters tend to be considered a peaceful place so they decide to break that stereotype by creating art that is more of a burst of energy than a peaceful and common creation. The band's live performances can also be described in exactly the same way. In general, they always take care of adequately representing their style, from the way they dress, act, play and compose.Even in the photo sessions and the presentation of the physical album there is that touch of rebellion and the marked influence of alternative and classic hard rock.
Finally I just have to say that Måneskin was an absolutely great discovery for me and that it is a band that I recommend 100%. Even if you don't understand Italian like me, they are so tremendously good that understanding what they say will be the least important thing. They are a phenomenal band that everyone should listen to.
