Today I want to talk about one of my obsessions in terms of music: Joji. He is a Japanese artist who has greatly impressed his general public for several years. He started his career with a dark humor YouTube channel (Filthy Frank) that I quite liked, but little by little he transitioned into music and that's when I really fell in love with him. I fell in love with the art he creates. In this post I will give you my opinion on my favorite album so far,Nectar.A love and heartbreak story❤️
Es un álbum de lo que para mí es una mezcla de R&B y Lofi que es simplemente perfecta, tanto que los 53 minutos que dura me parecen bastante pocos. Por supuesto, les daré mi opinión sobre cada canción
Nectarwas one of the albums that saved me during the pandemic 😅 I think I had it on repeat for several months in a row since this album was released in 2020. The record label is88risingand the main producer is Joji himself together to other people and has collaborations from various artists on some songs.It's an album of what for me is a mixture of R&B and Lofi that is simply perfect, so much so that the 53 minutes it lasts seems quite short to me. Of course, I will give you my opinion on each song
1.- EW
Este álbum comienza fuerte, comienza súper dramático. Ew inicia con una melodía a piano preciosa acompañada con la voz suave de Joji. Luego toma más fuerza en una canción de R&B y soul con arreglos orquestales que son los que le aportan más emotividad. Y ni hablar de la letra que es despecho total que al final se convierte en un lamento acentuado por instrumentos a cuerdas (violines, si mi oído no se equivoca).
Esta es de mis canciones favoritas del álbum y del artista en general, es una joya. Puede hacer llorar a cualquiera y me parece un inicio épico.
Es que en realidad el álbum inicia con una despedida... «Me enseñaste a amar sólo para dejarme ir. No puedo creer que no soy suficiente. Y hasta luego, nadie estará aquí para salvarte y nadie estará aquí para hacerte saber que éste es tu mundo».
1.- EW
This album starts off strong, it starts off super dramatic. Ew opens with a lovely piano melody accompanied by Joji's soft voice. Then it takes more strength in an R&B and soul song with orchestral arrangements that are the ones that give it the most emotion. And not to mention the lyrics that are total spite that in the end becomes a lament accentuated by string instruments (violins, if my ear is not mistaken).
This is one of my favorite songs on the album and the artist in general, it's a treasure. It can make anyone cry and I think it's an epic start.
It's just that the album actually begins with a farewell... "Teach me to love just to let me go. I can't believe that I'm not enough. And so long, no one will be here to save you and no one will be here to let you know that this is your world"
2.- MODUS «MODO»
Otro inicio con melodía en piano pero esta vez menos dramático. Es más bien suave, relajante. Pero luego entra un beat más de R&B y soul así como la voz es un poco más animada, sin embargo la letra continúa siendo sentimental y en general triste.
Esta canción a mí me hace pensar en depresión, estar en esa constante búsqueda de algo que te haga sentir mejor y no como una máquina inanimada. Creo que lo entiendo así lo la letra que da esta idea con varias frases clave como por ejemplo: «No me siento de la forma en la que me programaron que debía sentir hoy. Algunas piezas se están cayendo de la cintura para arriba». Por programación entiendo a medicación para regular ese episodio de depresión. Quizá sea una depresión derivada de la ruptura amorosa o quizá sólo esté hablando de padecer este trastorno mental.
Esta es mi canción favorita del álbum por el tema de la letra que es tan triste y el contraste que tiene con el beat que es más animado. Además la voz se vuelve más expresiva por lo que queda genial en el tema. Para mí es de las mejores canciones.
2.- MODUS
Another start with a piano melody but this time less dramatic. It is rather soft, relaxing. But then one more R&B and soul beat comes in as well as the vocals being a bit more lively, yet the lyrics remain sentimental and generally sad.
This song makes me think of depression, being in that constant search for something that makes you feel better and not like an inanimate machine. I think I understand it that way because the lyrics give this idea with several key phrases such as: «I don't feel the way they programmed me to feel today. Some pieces are falling from the waist up." By programming I think about medication to regulate that episode of depression. Maybe it's a depression derived from the love breakup or maybe he's just talking about suffering from this mental disorder.
This is my favorite song on the album because of the lyrics that are so sad and the contrast it has with the music that is more upbeat. In addition, the voice becomes more expressive so it looks great on the subject. For me it is one of the best songs.
3.- TICK TOCK
Tick Tock pero como de un reloj, no otra cosa 😅. Esta canción continúa con el tema de la ruptura amorosa y la añoranza de esa persona, deseando que vuelva. Sin embargo, las manecillas del reloj siguen moviéndose, el tiempo sigue pasando aunque esa persona ya no esté. Desear algo a veces no es suficiente para que ocurra. El vídeo de esta canción en particular demuestra más claramente el mensaje de "te extraño pero sigo adelante", porque Joji se ve triste pero incluso así haciendo varias cosas. Siguiendo con su vida.
El estilo es una mezcla de R&B y Lofi totalmente genial y bastante pegadiza. Y la voz de Joji es simplemente hermosa, suave y relajante.
3.- TICK TOCK
Tick Tock but like a clock, nothing else 😅. This song continues with the theme of breakup and longing for that person, wishing they would come back. However, the hands of the clock continue to move, time continues to pass even if that person is no longer there. Wishing for something is sometimes not enough to make it happen. The video for this particular song more clearly demonstrates the "I miss you but I'm moving on" message, because Joji looks sad but still doing various things. Moving on with his life.
The style is a totally cool mix of R&B and Lofi and quite catchy. And Joji's voice is just beautiful, soft and soothing.
4.- DAYLIGHT «LUZ DEL DÍA» ft. Diplo
El tema es constante en el álbum, es amor pero más que nada desamor. Sin embargo creo que le otorga diferentes perspectivas en cada canción y en este caso habla de que le cuesta mucho trabajo enfrentarse a cada día nuevo pero que sabe que esa otra persona está siguiendo adelante tranquilamente.
Lo interesante está en el contraste de la letra con la música. Es algo más de pop con R&B que en realidad transmite una sensación relajada y de cierta alegría o buena vibra, pero la letra es deprimente. Me parece una mezcla curiosa e interesante además de que es pegadiza.
The theme is constant on the album, it is love but more than anything heartbreak. However, I think it gives him different perspectives on each song and in this case he talks about how hard it is for him to face each new day but that he knows that that other person is calmly moving on.
The interesting thing is in the contrast of the lyrics with the music. It's more of a pop R&B thing that actually has a laid back feel and a certain joy or good vibe, but the lyrics are depressing. It seems to me a curious and interesting mix and besides that it is catchy.
5.- UPGRADE «MEJORA»
Esta canción me parece más una especie de interludio. Es bastante corta y la letra no dice mucho aunque con pocas palabras habla de mejorar y no perder tu esencia por alguien más, incluso si duele.
Me gusta que la canción suena como una mezcla entre sonidos modernos y algo más indie de otros años, por supuesto con un toque de Lofi característico de Joji que hace de este tema algo muy relajante y agradable. Pero también por un motivo que no sé explicar me genera cierta nostalgia.
5.- UPGRADE
This song seems more like an interlude to me. It's quite short and the lyrics don't say much although with few words it talks about getting better and not losing your essence for someone else, even if it hurts.
I like that the song sounds like a mix between modern sounds and something more indie from other times, of course with a touch of Joji's characteristic Lofi that makes this song very relaxing and pleasant. But also for a reason that I can't explain, it makes me feel a little nostalgic.
El título es romántico y la canción lo es también pero de una forma muy nostálgica. Es una persona herida que todo lo que desea es amor, incluso después del tie!lo que ha pasado y todo el sufrimiento, porque «todo el mundo está buscando a alguien a quien tener pero yo no puedo dejarte ir...»
Continúa con la mezcla de sonidos modernos, otros más viejos e indie, con soul y R&B, así crea un aura de nostalgia pura que te engancha a la canción que es muy emotiva. Más de una vez me ha hecho llorar de lo tristemente hermosa que es. Todo el mundo debería escucharla al menos una vez.
6.- GIMME LOVE
The title is romantic and the song is romantic too, but in a very nostalgic way. He is a hurt person who all he wants is love, even after all the time that has passed and all the suffering, because "everyone is looking for someone to have but I can't let you go..."
It continues with the mixture of modern sounds, other older and indie, with soul and R&B, thus creating an aura of pure nostalgia that hooks you to the song that is very emotional. More than once it has made me cry because of how sadly beautiful it is. Everyone should listen to it at least once.
7.- RUN «CORRE»
Volvemos al drama parecido al de la primera canción. Se continúa perdiendo en la tristeza que lo lleva a los excesos y comportamientos que sólo lo hacen estar más en la miseria, constantemente lamentando que la otra persona ya no está enamorada y él fue sólo un tonto.
Él sabe que ya no hay amor, él sólo quiere correr.
Esta canción es más rock alternativo con R&B, con bastante groove y un solo de guitarra espectacular que le da más drama a todo. En general, una canción increíble.
7.- RUN
We return to the drama similar to the first song. He continues to lose himself in sadness that leads to excesses and behaviors that only make him more miserable, constantly lamenting that the other person is no longer in love and he was just a fool.
He knows that there is no love anymore, he just wants to run.
This song is more alternative rock with R&B, with a lot of groove and a spectacular guitar solo that adds more drama to everything. Overall, an amazing song.
Similar a Gimme Love, con sonidos nuevos y viejos, R&B, soul y Lofi, «Sanctuary» es una joya de nostalgia y sentimientos genuinos. Inicia con lo que creo que es un sintetizador y la voz de Joji que suena muy clara, como muy limpia. En el coro es acompañada por varias voces más que hace que la canción sea hermosa.
La letra habla sobre el mismo protagonista diciéndole a la otra persona que no tiene porqué esperar a enamorase. Incluso él estaba «apuntando al cielo de allá arriba pero realmente un ángel no es lo que necesita». Es decir, la perfección no existe en el amor.
8.- SANCTUARY
Similar to Gimme Love, with sounds new and old, R&B, soul and Lofi, “Sanctuary” is a treasure of nostalgia and genuine feelings. It starts with what I think is a synth and Joji's voice sounds very clear, like very clean. In the chorus he is accompanied by several other voices that makes the song beautiful.
The lyrics talk about the same protagonist telling the other person that they don't have to wait to fall in love. Even he was "aiming to heaven above, an angel is not what he needs." That is to say, perfection does not exist in love.
9.- HIGH HOPES «ALTAS ESPERANZAS» ft. Omar Apollo
Esta es más mezcla de Lofi con R&B con cierta parte de trap por como es cantada por ambos artistas, y también tiene unos arreglos hermosos de violines. Para mí, una mezcla de elementos genial. Ambas voces, la de Joji y Omar también se complementan bastante bien con sus estilos únicos.
La letra habla de tener grandes esperanzas en una relación que lo más probable es que no funcione, no sólo eso puesto que también es algo bastante tóxico por ambas partes.
9.- HIGH HOPES ft. Omar Apollo
This is more of a mix of Lofi with R&B with a certain part of trap because of how it is sung by both artists, and it also has some beautiful violin arrangements. For me, a great mix of elements. Both Joji's and Omar's voices also complement each other quite well with their unique styles.
The lyrics talk about having high hopes in a relationship that most likely won't work out, not only that since it's also something quite toxic for both parties.
10.- NITROUS «NITROSO»
Habla de un estado de insensibilidad en que cae el protagonista ya que no sabe muy bien lo que siente. «El amor lo hace cantar pero el dolor lo hace pestañear» sin embargo, ya no siente nada. El nombre es perfecto ya que el «óxido nitroso» es un sedante, el famoso «gas de la risa» que ayuda a reducir la ansiedad y molestias.
Esta canción es más Lofi con pop que transmite buena vibra. Es bastante simple pero creo que a veces menos es más, es algo relajante y sencillo. Está complementada con bastante producción y la voz termina de hacer el trabajo. No es la mejor canción pero no está nada mal.
10.- NITROUS
It speaks of a state of numbness in which the protagonist falls since he does not know very well what he feels. "Love makes him sing but pain makes him blink" however, he no longer feels anything. The name is perfect since "nitrous oxide" is a sedative, the famous "laugh gas" that helps reduce anxiety and discomfort or pain.
This song is more Lofi with pop that gives off a good vibe. It's quite simple but I think sometimes less is more, it's something relaxing and simple. It is complemented with a lot of production and the voice finishes doing the job. It's not the best song but it's not bad at all.
11.- PRETTY BOY «NIÑO BONITO» ft. Lil Yachty
«Soy un niño bonito viviendo en el lado oeste. Viviendo tan ruidoso que nunca podrías escucharme llorar». Aquí el protagonista intenta ocultar su tristeza detrás pastillas y alcohol, detrás de una fachada con la que quiere aparentar que nada le importa cuando en realidad es todo lo contrario.
Sin embargo, la música va acorde con esa actitud despreocupada puesto que suena justamente así. Es la más lofi de todas, con uso de arreglos más alternativos y la voz también suena más relajada, sin la emotividad de antes. Por supuesto esto se nota más en el verso de Lil Yachty. La canción destaca porque realmente no suena triste y genera ese contraste con las otras que son lo opuesto. Sin embargo, puede que en este punto el protagonista finalmente esté aceptando lo ocurrido para seguir adelante.
11.- PRETTY BOY ft. Lil Yachty
"I'm a pretty boy living on the west side. Living so loud you could never hear me cry." Here the protagonist tries to hide his sadness behind pills and alcohol, behind a facade with which he wants to pretend that nothing matters to him when in reality it is the opposite.
However, the music is in keeping up with that carefree attitude since it sounds just like that. It is the most lofi of all, with the use of more alternative arrangements and the voice also sounds more relaxed, without the emotionality from before. Of course this is most noticeable in Lil Yachty's verse. The song stands out because it doesn't really sound sad and creates that contrast with the others that are the opposite. However, at this point the protagonist may finally be accepting what happened to therefore finally start to move on.
12.- NORMAL PEOPLE «GENTE NORMAL» ft. Rei Brown
Y sí, está saliendo adelante. En esta canción demuestra que aunque la otra persona tenga intención de volver, él ya no está dispuesto. Está en «un nuevo planeta» y apesar de lo que fue plantado antes que puede recordarse en ocasiones, es momento de buscar nuevas personas.
Esta es más R&B y soul con un groove genial y pegadizo, también ambas voces quedan genial juntas puesto que el estilo es bastante similar.
12.- NORMAL PEOPLE ft. Rei Brown
And yes, he is finally moving on. In this song he shows that even if the other person intends to return, he is no longer willing to. He is on "a new planet" and despite what was planted before that can be remembered at times, it is time to look for new people.
This is more R&B and soul with a great catchy groove, also both voices go great together since the style is quite similar.
13.- AFTERTHOUGHT «IDEA TARDÍA» ft. Benee
Continuando con el R&B lento, en esta canción definitivamente se deja claro que la relación ha terminado así como también está terminando el dolor pero eso sí, hay bastante arrepentimiento. Por supuesto ideas llegan en momentos de reflexión y es entonces cuando se desearía no olvidar a la otra persona, pero las cosas han cambiado.
La combinación de las voces de Joji y Benee es preciosa, se complementan perfectamente y creo que en la canción perfecta considerando la letra.
Continuing with the slow R&B, this song definitely makes it clear that the relationship is over as well as the pain is ending but yes, there is a lot of regret. Of course ideas come in moments of reflection and that is when you would like not to forget the other person, but things have changed.
The combination of Joji and Benee's voices is beautiful, they complement each other perfectly and I think it's the perfect song considering the lyrics.
14.- MR. HOLLYWOOD «SR. HOLLYWOOD»
Personas nuevas entran puesto que es imposible que no pase. Tal parece que esta vez todo está bien porque se acepta desde un principio que no todo estará bien siempre. Alguien le pide al señor Hollywood que vuelva pronto, asegurando que «no tienen porqué amarse bien, solo tienen que pasar la noche».
R&B de nuevo pero lo que destaca es las armonías constantes de la voz que suena totalmente preciosa. La voz de Joji tiene algo que mueve emocionalmente cuando canta este tipo de canciones.
14.- MR. HOLLYWOOD
New people come around since it is impossible for it not to happen. It seems that everything is fine this time because it is accepted from the beginning that not everything will always be fine. Someone asks Mr. Hollywood to come back soon, assuring that "they don't have to love each other right, they just have to make it through the night."
R&B again but what stands out is the constant harmonies of the voice that sounds absolutely gorgeous. Joji's voice has something that moves me emotionally when he sings these kinds of songs.
15.- 777
Es una canción sobre una vida sin frenos ni compromisos, el protagonista es un tanto egocéntrico y muy despreocupado. Quiere vivir la vida libre, rápido, sin preocupaciones así que «no lo molestes».
Es más soul y R&B, me recuerda un poco a canciones de los 80's por los sonidos y el aura general que tiene. Es pegadiza además transmite buen humor.
15.- 777
It is a song about a life without rules or compromises, the protagonist is somewhat self-centered and very carefree. He wants to live life free, fast and wild so "don't annoy him."
It's more soulful and R&B, it reminds me a bit of songs from the 80's because of the sounds and the general aura it has. It is catchy and also conveys good humor.
16.- REANIMATOR «REANIMADOR» ft. Yves Tumor
Esta canción es R&B y soul alternativo. Invita a bailar por el sonido en general y su ritmo, es una composición bastante interesante. Lo único que podría criticar es que es bastante lenta en llegar a ese punto bailable, después justo cuando se comienza a disfrutar la canción termina. Queda cortada de forma abrupta.
En la letra pudiera interpretarse que el protagonista le dice a esa persona que está corriendo un riesgo estando con él pero que a él no le molesta seguir con lo que tienen, todo depende de ella. «No depende de mí pero está bien si te hace sentir bien»
16.- REANIMATOR ft. Yves Tumor
This song is R&B and alternative soul. It invites you to dance due to the sound in general and its rhythm, it is a quite interesting composition. The only thing I could criticize is that it's quite slow to reach that danceable point, then just when you start to enjoy the song it suddenly ends. It is cut off abruptly.
In the lyrics, it could be interpreted that the protagonist tells that new person that he is taking a risk by being with her but that he doesn't mind continuing with what they have, it all depends on her. "It's not up to me but it's alright if it makes you feel good"
17.- LIKE YOU DO «COMO TÚ LO HACES»
Una balada R&B y soul totalmente preciosa. Los instrumentos principales son un piano y la voz que generan un sonido suave, melodioso que acompañado con la letra te hace sentir enamorado incluso si no lo estás. La letra habla del protagonista que finalmente se da cuenta que está enamorado (de nuevo) y que a pesar de que «el camino los pueda llevar por varias fases», nadie lo ama como ella. Acepta tomar el riesgo del amor nuevamente.
Esta canción es para llorar cada vez que se escucha. Queda perfecto como parte del cierre del álbum puesto que luego de tanta tristeza hay amor nuevamente.
17.- LIKE YOU DO
A totally gorgeous R&B and soul ballad. The main instruments are a piano and the voice that generate a soft, melodious sound that accompanied by the lyrics makes you feel in love even if you are not. The lyrics talk about the protagonist who finally realizes that he is in love (again) and that despite the fact that "the road can take them on different phases", no one loves him like she does. He agrees to take the risk of love again.
This song will make you cry every time you hear it. It is perfect as part of the closing of the album since after so much sadness there is love again.
18.- YOUR MAN «TU HOMBRE»
Acompañando a la canción anterior así como finalizando el álbum, «Your Man» es pop alternativo con R&B bastante alegre y un tanto rápida que genera un contraste total con el resto del álbum. Ya no hay tristeza ni dolor, sino que el protagonista se ha dado cuenta que no importa cuántas veces se ame, siempre vale la pena tomar ese riesgo. Joji termina hablando de creer en el amor una vez más.

18.- YOUR MAN
Accompanying the previous song as well as ending the album, "Your Man" is alternative pop with rather upbeat and somewhat fast R&B that makes for a complete contrast to the rest of the album. There is no longer sadness or pain, but the protagonist has realized that no matter how many times he feels love, it is always worth taking that risk. Joji ends up talking about believing in love once again.
"Don't be down when it's over, baby. I'll be your man"
Aunque mis favoritos son los de «Gimme Love», «Sanctuary» y del resto de canciones, como «Ew» donde usaron tomas de lava que con su movimiento hace que sea relajante, y con el color potente entre rojo, amarillo y naranja va acorde con la canción. En el caso de «Modus» es una especie de máquina donde pueden verse todos sus engranajes. Joji puede usar los recursos más curiosos y convertirlos en arte.
As for the visual part, the music videos are great as well as a perfect complement to each song. Those of "Tick Tock, Upgrade, Gimme Love, Run, Sanctuary, Pretty Boy and Your Man" are the ones starring Joji and they are amazing. Really well produced with a very interesting as well as alternative way of telling the story. Some look more indie, like from the 00's, others more modern and incredible.Although my favorites are those of «Gimme Love», «Sanctuary» and the rest of the songs, like «Ew» where they used shots of lava that with its movement makes it relaxing, and with the powerful color between red, yellow and orange it goes according to the song. In the case of "Modus" it is a kind of machine where all its gears can be seen. Joji can take the most curious resources and turn them into art.
Regarding the design of the album, it is quite simple but well done. The cover art is a headshot of Joji with a dramatic scale of red tones appropriate to the theme. In the interior it uses again the resources of organic materials. An interesting and striking decision.

This album makes you cry for heartbreak or it makes you cry for love, but what is sure is that it will make you cry 😅. Although of course that's not a bad thing, for me music that is capable of generating strong feelings in you is beautifully well made music that is worth listening to. Music is a reflection of what you carry inside.I 100% recommend this album as well as all of Joji's music. There is no more to say, he is simply a spectacular artist
