Desde ese entonces he escuchado estaba banda alternativa/indie/pop/punk que sin duda se ganó mi corazón con aquella primera canción. Esa chica que cantaba con una voz impecable, rebelde y de cabellos de colores incluso hoy en día me parece una artista increíble.
Así que hoy les hablaré de ese álbum al cual pertenece esa primera canción que escuché, Brand New Eyes (Ojos Nuevos). Un éxito para la banda en 2009, con una gran cantidad de ventas y tours alrededor del mundo✨
Once upon a time there was a 13-year-old girl who was watching TV. It was a nowadays non-existent channel called Boomerang and they used to play music between the commercials. She was drawing and had the TV as background noise, she wasn't paying attention but suddenly a song started playing that made her look up. It talked about fairy tales, unreal worlds and how all of that was made up lies to evade reality… I immediately had to write down the name of the band. Paramore.Since then I have listened to this alternative/indie/pop/punk band that without a doubt won my heart with that first song. That girl who sang with an impeccable, rebellious voice and with colored hair even today is an incredible artist to me.
So today I'm gonna to talk about that album to which that first song I heard belongs, Brand New Eyes. A success for the band in 2009, with a large amount of sales and tours around the world✨
The album begins in the band's signature style, a mix of pop, alternative rock, and yes, quite a bit of emo. A song with a lot of energy but nothing of heavy rock which together with the lyrics conveys motivation to keep going. The lyrics invite you to achieve your dreams on your own when no one else is supporting you, even if that means you don't have to be as careful as you used to be.

Canción 1: CAREFUL (CUIDADOSA)
El álbum comienza con el estilo característico de la banda, una mezcla de pop, rock alternativo y sí, bastante emo. Una canción con mucha energía pero nada de rock pesado, que junto conla letra transmite motivación a seguir adelante. La letra te invita a conseguir tus sueños por tus propios medios cuando nadie más te está apoyando, incluso si eso significa que ya no debes ser tan cuidadosa como antes.
”La verdad nunca me liberó, así que lo haré yo misma”
“Where's your gavel? Your jury? What’s my offense this time? You’re not a judge but if you are gonna judge me, well sentence me to another life”
We continue with the energy but this time the lyrics are more aggressive. Talk about betrayal, disappointment, rancor and rebellion. It's facing that person who hurt us in some way and yelling at them that we don't care anymore. They can settle for being ignored.
The vocals and guitars get a lot more aggressive too, with louder distortion and Hayley almost angrily screaming the lyrics. One of the best songs on the album.
“You treat me like another stranger! Well, it’s nice to meet you, sir. I guess I'll go, I'll be best be on my way out”
Canción 2: IGNORANCE (IGNORANCIA)
”¿Dónde está tu mazo? ¿Y tu jurado? ¿Cuál es mi ofensa esta vez? No eres un juez pero si vas a juzgarme, sentenciame a otra vida”
Seguimos con la energía pero en esta ocasión la letra sí es más agresiva. Habla de traición, desengaño, rencor y rebelión. Es enfrentar a aquella persona que nos hirió de alguna forma y gritarle que ya no nos importa. Que pueden conformarse con ser ignorados.
La voz y las guitarras se tornan mucho más agresivas también, con distorsión más fuerte y Hayley casi gritando con rabia la letra. Una de las mejores canciones del álbum.
”¡Me tratas tal como a otra extraña! Bueno, es un placer conocerlo, señor. Supongo que me voy, estaré mejor camino a la salida”
Track 3: PLAYING GOD
This song has a good overall contrast with the other two and with itself. It is much slower than the others with a much poppier sound and softer vocals. But it plays an interesting contrast to the lyrics because the lyrics are still pretty aggressive.
It is a criticism of those people who believe they are God, perfect and holy without any type of mistake or flaws. Also those self-centered or narcissistic people who do not see beyond themselves. It's a fair and harsh criticism for how true it is, and the name represents it perfectly.
“Next time you point a finger I might have to bend it back or break it, break it off. Next time you point a finger, I'll point you to the mirror”
Canción 3: PLAYING GOD (JUGANDO A SER DIOS)
Esta canción tiene un buen contraste general con las otras dos y en sí misma. Es mucho más lenta que las otras, con un sonido mucho más pop y vocales más suaves. Pero juega un contraste interesante con la letra porque esta sigue siendo bastante agresiva.
Es una crítica a esas personas que se creen Dios, perfectas y santas sin ningún tipo de error o defecto. También esas personas egocéntricas o narcisistas que no ven más allá de sí mismos. Es una crítica justa y dura por lo cierta que es, y el nombre lo representa perfectamente.
”La próxima vez que señales con tu dedo tendré que doblarlo hacia atrás o quebrártelo. La próxima vez que señales, te señalaré al espejo”
Track 4: BRICK BY BORING BRICK
Well this is that first song that won my heart. Energetic, alternative and quite emo, it tells the story about a girl who saw everything rosy and pretended to live in a fantasy but soon discovers that behind that perfect and unreal world there is also a latent harsh reality. Sometimes we use fantasies as coping mechanisms trying to escape from our harsh reality but this is not healthy either since we live deceiving ourselves.
The lyrics and melodies are very, very catchy making this song a total hit. Of course the music video is perfectly set in a fairy tale.
”Go get your shovel! And we’ll dig a deep hole to bury the castle.”
Canción 4: BRICK BY BORING BRICK (LADRILLO POR LADRILLO ABURRIDO
Pues esta es aquella primera canción que se ganó mi corazón. Enérgica, alternativa y bastante emo, narra la historia de una niña que veía todo color de rosa y pretendía vivir una fantasía, pero pronto descubre que detrás de ese mundo perfecto e irreal también hay una realidad cruda latente. A veces usamos las fantasías como mecanismos de defensa, intentando escapar de nuestra dura realidad, pero esto tampoco es sano ya que vivimos engañándonos a nosotros mismos.
La letra y melodías son muy, muy pegajosas, haciendo de esta canción un hit total. Por supuesto el video musical está perfectamente ambientado en un cuento de hadas.
”¡Ve a buscar tu pala! Y cavaremos un hoyo profundo para enterrar el castillo”
It's still an energetic style but this song is a little softer, as it talks about false beliefs, broken illusions and efforts in vain. Sometimes no matter how hard we try, the results are not what we expect. And that is quite usual.
At the end it talks about accepting this reality and turning off our pride... Again.
Canción 5: TURN IT OFF (APÁGALO)
Continúa siendo un estilo enérgico pero esta canción es un poco más suave, ya que habla de falsas creencias, ilusiones rotas y esfuerzos en vano. En ocasiones por mucho que nos esforcemos los resultados no son los que esperamos. Y eso es bastante usual.
Al final habla de aceptar esta realidad y apagar nuestro orgullo… Otra vez.
At this point it is a pretty clear break in the rebellious and energetic theme of the album. This could be a flaw in the album since it doesn't fit overall, but the song is so good that it's not noticeable lol.
It is a very romantic and beautiful rock ballad, where they sing to us about letting our guard down and daring to fall in love. The chorus is repetitive but catchy and Hayley's voice after all the aggression becomes so sweet that it helps the song to be like a little break.
Canción 6: THE ONLY EXCEPTION (LA ÚNICA EXCEPCIÓN)
En este punto sí es un corte bastante claro en la temática rebelde y enérgica del álbum. Esto pudiera ser una falla en el álbum ya que no cuadra en general, pero la canción es tan buena que no se nota jajaja.
Es una balada rock muy romántica y bonita, donde nos cantan sobre bajar la guardia y atrevernos a enamorarnos. El coro es repetitivo pero pegajoso y la voz de Hayley después de toda la agresividad se vuelve tan dulce que ayuda a que la canción sea como una especie de break, un pequeño descanso.
We are slowly picking up speed. The energy and rebellion returns speaking of traitors and their lies, as we no longer have time to feel sorry. The mix of the instrumental and the lyrics I consider to be perfect.
”All the best lies, they are told with fingers tied, so cross them tight. Won’t me tonight.”
Canción 7: FEELING SORRY (SINTIENDO LÁSTIMA)
Vamos recuperando la velocidad lentamente. Vuelve la energía y rebeldía, hablando de traidores y sus mentiras, como ya no tenemos tiempo para sentir lástima. La mezcla de la instrumental y la letra considero que es perfecta.
”Todas las mejores mentiras son contadas con los dedos atados, así que crúzalos con fuerza. No me hagas promesas esta noche.”
Energetic but this time there is no anger, but happiness because finally the view is changing. The lyrics talk about how just before throwing in the towel and giving up, things can improve if we keep striving and doing what is necessary to achieve our goals.
The change towards joy is at the right and necessary moment on the album to provide it with dynamic.
Canción 8: LOOKING UP (MEJORANDO)
Energía pero en esta ocasión no hay rabia sino felicidad porque finalmente el panorama está cambiando. La letra habla de como justo antes de tirar la toalla las cosas pueden mejorar si nos seguimos esforzando y haciendo lo necesario por alcanzar nuestras metas.
El cambio hacia la alegría queda en el momento justo y necesario en el álbum para aportarle dinámica.
Track 9: WHERE THE LINES OVERLAP
This is probably my least favorite song on the album. Although the positive thing is that it continues to talk about joy and hope, dreams fulfilled and to be fulfilled, it seems to me a much more pop song that doesn't fit very well into the general theme, at least in my opinion.
So for me it's a bit boring song although it's not too bad itself. It only seems to me to be the weak point of the album.
Canción 9: WHERE THE LINES OVERLAP (DONDE LAS LÍNEAS COINCIDEN)
Probablemente esta es la canción que menos me gusta del álbum. Aunque lo positivo es que continúa hablando de alegría y esperanza, sueños cumplidos y por cumplir, me parece una canción mucho más pop que no encaja muy bien en la temática general, al menos en mi opinión.
Por lo tanto para mí es una canción un poco aburrida aunque no es mala como tal. Sólo me parece el punto flojo del álbum.
Change again. From the previous joy we went to sadness. This song talks about losing your way but keep moving forward, perhaps out of inertia. We move forward but without conviction, without knowing where we will end up or why we are moving. Wandering around like ghosts.
The change is also noticeable in the instrumental as they switch from full rock band to just two acoustic guitars and Hayley's beautiful voice. It is a soft and sad song.
This is one of my favorites from the album and the band in general, it is super nice.
Canción 10: MISGUIDED GHOSTS (FANTASMAS SIN RUMBO)
Cambio nuevamente. De la alegría anterior pasamos a tristeza. Esta canción habla de perder el rumbo pero seguir avanzando, quizá por inercia. Avanzamos pero sin convicción, sin saber a donde llegaremos ni porqué nos movemos. Deambulando como fantasmas.
El cambio también se nota en la instrumental ya que cambian de la banda de rock completa a solo dos guitarras acústicas y la hermosa voz de Hayley. Es una canción suave y triste.
Esta es de mis favoritas del álbum y la banda en general, es súper bonita.
This is an interesting song. In general it is slow and speaks of demotivation and a certain sadness, a kind of reluctance plus spite because it speaks of someone who seems to be gone. A person or perhaps that energy that kept us strong.
But the slowness is only in the verses, since the chorus, although it is a simple phrase, Hayley shouts at the top of her lungs with incredible vocals. It is not enough to describe that voice, you have to listen to it. It is a spectacular song.
Canción 11: ALL I WANTED (TODO LO QUE QUERÍA)
Esta es una canción interesante. En general es lenta y habla de desmotivación y cierta tristeza, una especie de desgana más despecho porque habla de alguien que parece ya no estar. Una persona o quizá aquella energía que nos mantenía con fuerza.
Pero la lentitud está sólo en las estrofas, ya que el coro aunque es una simple frase, Hayley la grita a todo pulmón con unas vocales increíbles. No basta con describir esa voz, tienes que escucharla. Es una canción espectacular.
Song that was created for a soundtrack of a movie that love it or hate it, was a success and marked a time in the lives of many people. Decode is a song that I heard for the first time when I saw Twilight. I loved the super dark emo voice and song, but I didn't knew who it was until I bought this album.
It's a totally great song since considering that it was made specifically for that soundtrack, the lyrics describe the story of the book/movie in a more poetic way, in addition to that dark aura of the instrumental is perfect.

Canción Extra: DECODE (DESCIFRAR)
Canción que fue creada para una banda sonora de una película que ames o odies, fue un éxito y marcó una época de la vida de muchas personas. Decode es una canción que escuché por primera vez cuando vi Crepúsculo. Adoraba la voz y la canción súper emo y oscura, pero no supe de quién era hasta que compré este álbum.
Es una canción totalmente genial, ya que considerando que fue hecha específicamente para esa banda sonora, la letra describe de una forma más poética la historia del libro/película además de que esa aura oscura de la instrumental queda perfecta.

En cuanto a la estética es bastante limpia y alternativa, con una mariposa real muerta como portada. Dato curioso, esa portada fue totalmente improvisada.
Hayley encontró esa mariposa muerta fuera de su casa y le llamo la atención. Pensó que era bonita por lo que decidió que esa sería la portada del álbum. De resto en el folleto vemos fotos de la propia casa de la cantante así como de la banda. Sencillo pero bueno.
Overall this is a good album. My only criticism is that the rebellious theme gets lost in some songs making it a bit inconsistent, but the songs are so well done that it doesn't show too much.Aesthetically it's pretty clean and alternative, with a real dead butterfly as the cover. Fun fact, that cover was totally improvised.
Hayley found that dead butterfly outside her house and it caught her eye. She thought it was pretty so she decided that would be the album cover. The rest in the brochure we see photos of the singer's own house as well as her band. Simple but good.
