[ENG] [ESP] Review: The Open Door, my favorite album || Reseña: La Puerta Abierta, mi álbum favorito

I'm Mandy and today I wanted to talk about my favorite album of all time from my favorite band, Evanescence. You probably heard about them before, especially their most famous song Bring Me to Life published in the early 2000's. It's an alternative goth metal band that got famous for their unique style at the time, the dark and mystical aura of their music and of course the absolute stunning and beautifully haunting voice of the frontwomam and singer, Amy Lee.
Soy Mandy y hoy quería hablar sobre mi álbum favorito de mi banda favorita, Evanescence. Probablemente has escuchado de ellos antes, especialmente su canción más famosa Bring Me to Life o Tráeme a la vida
Publicada en los principios de los 2000. Es una banda alternativa gótica de metal que logró ser famosa gracias a su estilo único para la época. El aura mística y oscura de su música y por supuesto la impresionante y hermosamente hipnótica voz de la líder y cantante, Amy Lee.
The band had a great success right when they started their career with various big hits widely awarded and even today they are a reference in the mainstream music industry and also in the rock/metal world. Nowadays they're still active putting out their work but it turns out obvious they're not as mainstream as they used to be (their pretty much underrated), although that hasn't stopped them to keep on making music that is honestly very well done and pleasant to listen to.
La banda tuvo un gran éxito apenas empezaron su carrera con varios grandes hits ampliamente premiados e incluso hoy en día son un gran referente dentro de la parte mainstream de la industria de la música y también del mundo del rock/metal. Actualmente siguen activos sacando trabajo epro resulta evidente que ya no son tan populares como solían ser (son bastante infravalorados), aunque eso no les ha impedido seguir haciendo música que honestamente está muy bien hecha y es un placer escuchar.
Ahora les daré entonces mi opinión sobre The Open Door (La Puerta Abierta), su segundo álbum de estudio publicado en 2006 con 13 canciones alcanzando una duración de 54:15 minutos, el cual a su vez logró llegar a ser certificado Platino x2 en EE.UU y Platino en Reino Unido. Este álbum es una mezcla de rock melodramático/gótico/industrial con un poco de progresivo y hermosos toques de música clásica. En general una preciosa sinfonía inquietante y mágica que voy a intentar deconstruir en la mejor manera posible para poder hablar de todo el trabajo hecho. ¡Aquí voy! 🖤

Track 1: SWEET SACRIFICE
With this song Evanescence gives us a strong, powerful beginning with a song about struggles in life and love and the sacrifices that sometimes we have to make in order to be set free. It talks about how fear can overcome us but also how it's simply in our heads and that we, as innocent creatures have to realize that we are the only one who can realease ourselves from fear and suffering. In the end you can be your own hero or your worst enemy.
Canción 1: SWEET SACRIFICE (DULCE SACRIFICIO)
Con esta canción Evanescence nos da un inicio fuerte y poderoso con una canción sobre las dificultades en la vida y en el amor y los sacrificios que en ocasiones debemos hacer para poder ser libres. Habla sobre cómo el miedo puede apoderarse de nosotros pero también sobre cómo este está simplemente en nuestras cabezas y nosotros, las criaturas inocentes, nos debemos dar cuenta de que somos los únicos que podemos liberarnos del miedo y sufrimiento. Al final puedes ser tu propio héroe o tu peor enemigo.
Track 2: CALL ME WHEN YOU'RE SOBER
Keep going with the powerful energy this song has a smooth beginning with a piano and Amy's vocals but after a few seconds it transform in a strong song that talks about breaking up with a toxic relationship. It is clearly shown with lyrics such as "Don't cry to me, if you loved me you would be here with me" or "you never call me when you're sober, you only want it 'cause it's over".
In the video as well with Amy singing this to a guy and her getting empowered and showing that she's the one in control is perfectly complementary to this song. She also openly admitted in later interviews that the song is about her ex-boyfriend also vocalist of the band Seether.
Canción 2: CALL ME WHEN YOU'RE SOBER (LLÁMAME CUANDO ESTÉS SOBRIO)
Siguiendo con la energía llena de poder está canción tiene un inicio suave con un piano y la voz de Amy pero después de unos segundos se convierte en una canción fuerte que habla sobre una ruptura de una relación tóxica. Es claramente demostrado en letras como "no llores por mí, si me amases estarías aquí conmigo" o "tú nunca me llamas cuando estás sobrio, sólo quieres esto porque sabes que se terminó".
En el video también, con Amy cantando esta letra a un chico y ella siendo empoderada y demostrando que es ella quien tiene el control y es perfectamente complementario con esta canción. Después ella también admitió abiertamente en entrevistas posteriores que la canción es acerca de su ex novio y también vocalista de la banda Seether.
Track 3: WEIGHT OF THE WORLD
A heavy rock song with symphonic touches that talks about feeling crushed by the pressure of the struggles in life and how you need to break free from that infinite weight of sadness and suffering that's pushing you down and making you feel over. One of the heaviest song in the album along with smooth vocals in actually a hit song.
Canción 3: WEIGHT OF THE WORLD (EL PESO DEL MUNDO)
Una canción de rock pesado con toques sinfónicos que habla sobre ser aplastado por la presión de las dificultades de la vida y cómo se necesita ser libre de ese peso infinito de la tristeza y sufrimiento que te empuja hacia abajo y te hace sentir acabado. Una de las canciones más pesadas del álbum con la voz suave es un hit.
Track 4: LITHIUM
One of the best songs in the album, it describes the duality between feeling good and bad about a certain situation. It can be a relationship, a sickness, or actually anything that make you feel divided. The ambiguous lyrics leaves open to interpretation to what can possibly make you feel mixed emotions. It's a song about feeling both sadness and joy and how toxic that can be, so you probably need medicine to help you out. That can be interpreted by the name of the song because lithium is actually a mood stabilizer for maniac episodes presented in the bipolar disorder.
About the music the track also is a mixe of hard metal in the choures with soft melodic rock in the verses. The bridge and the last choures is a mix between both, with hard instrumental but a soft vocal and piano that is simply epic. The music video for this song is dark and beautiful in a good goth style.
Canción 4: LITHIUM (LITIO)
Una de las mejores canciones del álbum, describe la dualidad de sentirse bien y a la vez mal respecto a determinada situación. Puede ser una relación, una enfermedad, o realmente cualquier cosa que te haga sentir dividido. La letra ambigua deja libre a interpretación sobre lo que posiblemente pueda hacerte sentir sentimientos encontrados. Es una canción sobre sentir tristeza y alegría y cuan tóxico puede ser eso, así que probablemente necesites una medicina que te ayude. Eso puede interpretarse por el nombre de la canción porque el litio es de hecho un estabilizador emocional para los episodios maníacos presentados en el trastorno bipolar.
Respecto a la parte musical la canción es también una mezcla de metal pesado en los coros con rock melódico y suave en las estrofas. El puente y el último coro es un amezcla entre ambos con una instrumental fuerte pero un piano y voz dulce es simplemente épico. El vídeo musical de esta canción es oscuro y hermoso con un buen estilo gótico.

Track 5: CLOUD NINE
One of the most underrated songs from the album, it talks about how extremely happy you feel after you realise that there are things you can't change nor control, that anything should stop you and that you don't need to fear anything, not even dead, so in that way you can enjoy the ride of life alone. But of course this reckless state of mind can be dangerous. The sound is very sensual as Amy describes it herself. It's a seductive hard metal song and suits well to the lyrics.
Canción 5: CLOUD NINE (NUBE NUEVE)
Una de las canciones más infravaloradas del álbum, habla sobre lo increíblemente feliz que te sientes después de darte cuenta de que hay cosas que no puedes controlar ni cambiar, que nada deberías detenerte y que no necesitas temerle a nada, ni siquiera a la muerte, entonces así puedes disfrutar el paseo por la vida solo. Pero por supuesto este estado mental rebelde puede ser peligroso. El sonido es muy sensual, como la misma Amy lo describe. Es una seductora canción de metal pesado y le queda perfecta a la letra.
Track 6: SNOW WHITE QUEEN
Narrates the story about a stalker and his victim through both points of view. The stalker being disgustingly obsessed with his victim, idolizing her, and the victim being completely terrified and unsafe. It is based on a real life experience lived by Amy herself and the describes how she felt when it happened to her.
Of course it's a creepy song, the atmosphere that it sets is very dark, mixing haunting and smooth vocals along with creepy musical arrangements in the verses which are the victim point of view and suddenly they become powerful and heavy in the choures for the stalker point of view. Simply an amazing way to tell this story.
Track 6: SNOW WHITE QUEEN(REINA BLANCA NIEVES)
Narra la historia sobre un acosador y su víctima a través de ambos puntos de vista. El acosador estando desagradablemente obsesionado con su víctima, idolatrándola, y la víctima estando completamente aterrorizada e insegura. Está basada en una experiencia real vivida por la misma Amy y describe cómo ella se sintió cuando esto le pasó.
Por supuesto es una canción siniestra, la atmósfera que impone es bastante oscura mezclada con voces encantadoras y suaves junto a arreglos musicales tenebrosos en los versos en los cuales se describe el punto de vista de la víctima; después de forma repentina se torna poderosa y pesada en los coros para el punto de vista del acosador. Simplemente una increíble forma de contar esta historia.
Track 7: LACRYMOSA
The hard goth metal version of the famous Lacrimosa by Mozart. A powerful, epic, symphonic, classical and rock masterpiece of the album shows the unique Evanescence's style. The lyrics are about mourning, solitude, guilt and finally letting all go is like a cry for that thing we have lost forever. Simply my favorite song from this album and you all should listen to at least once (with headphones for a better experience!)✨
Canción 7: LACRYMOSA
La versión gótica de metal pesado de la famosa Lacrimosa de Mozart. Una pieza maestra poderosa, épica, sinfónica, clásica y de rock para este álbum que demuestra el estilo único de Evanescence. La letra es sobre luto, soledad, culpa y finalmente dejar ir todo eso, es como un llanto por aquello que hemos perdido para siempre. Simplemente mi canción favorita de este álbum y que todos deberían escuchar al menos una vez (¡con auriculares para una mejor experiencia!)✨
Track 8: LIKE YOU
Following the same theme of Lacrymosa, this song is like sharing one last tear for that person or that thing that are the reason to our grief. It's finally accepting that we lost that beloved person forever and even if it hurts so much, there's nothing else we can do expected for waiting to dead to come so we can join that person.
Again a very creepy song, one of the most soft and melodic ones with a piano as the main instrument along with the beautiful and heartbreaking vocals. Amy said the lyrics are inspired on the process of grief she lived when she lost one of her sisters due to a rare disease at a very young age. Although its a very dark way to represent her emotions you can't deny how incredibly deep and private are the emotions she shared here.
Canción 8: LIKE YOU (COMO TÚ)
Siguiendo la temática de Lacrymosa, esta canción es como derramar una última lágrima por esa persona o aquella cosa que es la razón de nuestro lamento. Es aceptar finalmente que hemos perdido a ese ser querido para siempre e incluso si duele tanto no hay nada más que podamos hacer excepto esperar la muerte para poder encontrarnos con esa persona nuevamente.
Una vez más una canción bastante tenebrosa, un de las más melódicas con un piano como instrumento principal junto con la voz hermosa y desgarradora. Amy dijo ir la letra está inspirada en el proceso de luto que ella vivió cuando perdió a una de sus hermanas a una edad bastante joven debido a una rara enfermedad. Aunque sea una forma oscura de representar sus emociones no se puede negar lo increíblemente profundas y privadas que son las emociones que ella compartió aquí.
Track 9: LOSE CONTROL
Again, another underrated song. With also a seductive and haunting aura it's a song about letting yourself go and be completely reckless. I believe I've read somewhere that Amy said in a interview that this song is about having an affair or seducing someone who is already taken. If it's not and she didn't said anything alike (sorry) at least it's what the song transmit to me. The music is hard goth rock again mixed with soft arrangements.
Canción 9: LOSE CONTROL (PERDER EL CONTROL)
Nuevamente una canción infravalorada. También con un aura encantadora y seductora es una canción sobre dejarte llevar y ser completamente rebelde. Creo haber leído en alguna parte que Amy dijo en una entrevista que esta canción es sobre tener una aventura amorosa o sobre seducir a alguien que ya tiene un compromiso. Si no lo es y ella no dijo nada parecido (lo siento) al menos es lo que esta canción me transmite. La música es otra vez rock gótico pesado con una mezcla de arreglos suaves.
Track 10: THE ONLY ONE
This song is also a heavy one but the meaning is more hopeful. It talks about overcoming our suffering and realising that we are not the only one who is suffering and in pain. We're constantly seeking for a new hope. It has strong guitars, drums, bass and vocals. It's like an anthem for the brokenhearted that want to be restored.
Canción 10: THE ONLY ONE (EL ÚNICO)
Esta es una canción bastante pesada pero el significado es más esperanzador. Habla sobre superar nuestro sufrimiento y darnos cuenta de que no somos los únicos que sufrimos y sentimos dolor. Estamos constantemente buscando un nueva esperanza. Tiene unas guitarras fuertes, batería, bajo y voz. Es como un himno para los corazones rotos que desean recuperarse.
Track 11: YOUR STAR
A gorgeous song but also a very sad one. It talks about the loneliness you can feel when you don't have your loved ones around and you're not at home. It's about missing someone or something. It's also a dark music, mixed with soft and heavy sounds but especially with an absolutely gorgeous and hypnotizing piano solo that simply traps you in the song.
Canción 11: YOUR STAR (TU ESTRELLA)
Una canción preciosa pero también bastante triste. Habla sobre la soledad que puedes sentir cuando no tienes a tus seres queridos cerca y tú tampoco estás en casa. Es sobre extrañar a alguien o a algo. La música también es oscura mezclada con sonidos suaves y otros pesados pero principalmente con un solo de piano absolutamente precioso e hipnotizante que simplemente te atrapa dentro de la canción.
Track 12: ALL THAT I'M LIVING FOR
Written by Amy and John LeCompt the guitarist, this song as its name says is about the process of overcoming all the hard and horrible things that we have to go through but also growing from those experience. Again a mix of heavy, dark and creepy sounds with hard metal drums, guitars and bass and haunting vocals. The perfect mix. It has an acoustic version that to me sounds like a dark lullaby. Amazing.
Canción 12: ALL THAT I'M LIVING FOR (TODO LO QUE ESTOY VIVIENDO)
Escrita por Amy y John LeCompt el guitarrista, está canción tal como su nombre indica es sobre el proceso de superar las cosas difíciles y horribles que tenemos que atravesar pero también crecer gracias a esas experiencias. Otra vez una mezcla de sonidos pesados, siniestros y oscuros con batería, guitarras y bajo de metal pesado y una voz encantadora. La mezcla perfecta. Tiene también una versión acústica que para mí suena como una canción de cuna oscura. Increíble.
Track 13: GOOD ENOUGH
The perfect melodramatic end for a very dramatic album. Good enough talks about love and feeling like you are worth to be loved and enough to love someone with all your heart and soul. The lyrics describe someone madly in love that will give everything for his lover. It's a piano/voice duo along with strings that simply keeps you captive to the music and its overwhelming beauty. And the music video... You gotta watch it to understand how great it is.
Canción 13: GOOD ENOUGH (SUFICIENTEMENTE BUENA)
El perfecto final melodramático para un álbum bastante dramático. Good enough (suficientemente buena) habla sobre el amor y sentir que vale la pena ser amado y ser suficiente para amar a alguien más con toda tu alma y corazón. La letra describe a alguien locamente enamorado que daría todo por su amante. Es un duo de piano y voz junto a instrumentos de cuerdas que te mantiene cautivo a la música y su belleza abrumante. Y el vídeo musical... Tienes que verlo para entender lo genial que es.
Posteriormente la banda publicó tres canciones que fueron incluidas como B-sides ("Cara B", quiere decir canciones secundarias), no incluidas en la versión final inicial por considerar que no encajaban bien con el resto de las canciones. "Together Again" (Juntos otra vez) sonaba mucho más oscura, "If you Don't Mind" (Si no te importa) era más rock pesado y no realmente gótica, y "The Last Song I'm Wasting on You" (La última canción que desperdiciaré en ti" es de hecho una que yo considero que era buena de incluir, una canción bastante triste y dramática, pero supongo que para la banda esto no era suficiente... ¿Quién sabe? De todas formas estas canciones están disponibles para escucharlas y disfrutarlas.
Aparte de las canciones asombrosas este álbum también tiene un arte realmente genial y bien hecho, con una portada diseñada por Amy, quien luego en línea compartió el boceto, el arte del disco en sí siendo una constelación con los nombres de las canciones en los bordes, el logo de la banda en la parte de atrás, y también el folleto tiene dibujos alusivos a las letras de cada canción.

For example, in the page for Your Star we can see a telescope, the instrument use to see stars and planets. The allusion is obvious. For All that I'm living for we can see a key, allusive to the lyric "lock the last open door".
For Sweet Sacrifice there's a butterfly. In psychology of dreams this insect represent freedom and along with the lyrics you can see how it represents the verses "you poor sweet innocent thing" as well as "now that I'm unchained". It's also a symbol of the soul.
Por ejemplo, en la página de Your Star (Tu Estrella) podemos ver un telescopio, la herramienta usada para ver las estrellas y planetas. La alusión es obvia. Para All That I'm living for (Todo lo que estoy viviendo) podemos ver una llave alusiva a la letra "cierra la última puerta abierta".
Para Sweet Sacrifice (dulce sacrificio) está una mariposa. En la psicología de los sueños este insecto representa la libertad y en las letras puedes ver cómo ésta representa los versos "tú, pobre y dulce cosa inocente" así como "ahora que estoy sin cadenas". También es un símbolo del alma.
