UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF DRUMMING

I use to make one silly mistake which everyone makes then. “Drum” is different from “drumming”.

I use to make the mistake of saying, “Drums has become part of me”, that statement is wrong. Drums and drumming are two different terminologies that means different things entirely. A drums is the short way of saying drum set and it is the instrument you play while drumming is the skill or talent itself.

Before venturing into drumming properly, you need to understand the concept of drumming so as not to encounter problem while trying to be an advance drummer. There are things you need to do and know and those things you need to do and know are the concepts I am talking about.

A lot of drummers are struggling to improve because they have failed to understand that this drumming has principle/concept that must be
followed.

What are these concepts?
They include:

1. THE BASICS/FOUNDATION OF DRUMMING

2. PRACTICING

3. CONSISTENCY

4. THE BASICS/FOUNDATION OF DRUMMING:

Before you can be able to read and write properly, you were thought ABCD to Z and incorporation of sentence right? The same way you have ABCD in English language as the basics of it and that is the same way drumming has its own ABCD.

You can actually do without the ABCD of drumming, but drumming will be so tiring and frustrating for you.

A lot of people have said they don’t know the ABCD of drumming but they can play the drums without it. I believe that anything you find yourself doing make sure you try doing it well.

You spend 10 years playing the drums without the ABCD and you are still proudly saying that you can play the drums well without the ABCD; you think that is a gift? That is pure foolishness and ignorance; you are doing road side drumming not the real drumming.

You know drumming has it ABCD and you have been playing the drums without the ABCD but you still neglect it, which makes it foolishness. You don’t know that drumming has it ABCD and you have been playing the drums without the ABCD that is ignorance.

The ABCD of drumming is the basics or foundation of drumming; it is the ground at which
your improvement depends on. When the ground is faulty, anything that will be built on it will crumble and won’t stay. That is why whenever I see someone that has been struggling to improve for long and isn’t improving; the first prescription I give to that drummer is, “telling him to go back to learning the basics of drumming”.

The basics of drumming are so important
that if you skip it, any other thing that you will be learning will become very complicated to
learn.

So the first thing you should look at when you finally decide to become a drummer is knowing the basics, you need to have a good foundation before anything else.

Here are some of the basics you need to master immediately you become a drummer:

1. Drums, Cymbals, and Sticks(knowing the part of the drum kit, knowing the cymbals, and
   knowing the kind of stick to buy)
2. Gripping the Stick technique
3. Stroke Technique.
4. Basic Drum Beat
5. Independence
6. Rudiments and Note Value
7. Hi-Hat Technique
8. Cymbals Technique.
9. Kick Technique
10. Sitting Posture
11. Drum Theories

All what I just listed above are things that if you neglect you will keep getting it wrong in your drumming.

Enough of doing road side drumming. This things I mentioned are the cement, and blocks you need to build a solid foundation in drumming for yourself,and the water you need to finalize everything is practicing consistently.
