With Arms Wide Open by Creed (Video Review) ESP/ENG
Hello friends, today I want to do something I haven't done for a long time, I mean a review of a music video, this time I chose With Arms Wide Open released in 2000, by the band Creed, I remember that at the time I used to watch it on MTV and recently I came across it again through youtube. It is a song with a lot of strength not only on a musical level but it is loaded with a powerful message of hope, while the music video perfectly accompanies the concept through a succession of thought-provoking images.
Hola amigos, hoy quiero hacer algo que no hacía desde hace mucho, me refiero a una review de un video musical, en esta ocasión escogí With Arms Wide Open estrenado en el año 2000, de la banda Creed, recuerdo que en su momento yo solía verlo en MTV y recientemente me encontré de nuevo con él a través de youtube. Es una canción con mucha fuerza no solo a nivel musical sino que está cargada con un poderoso mensaje de esperanza, mientras que el video musical acompaña perfectamente el concepto a través de una sucesión de imágenes que invitan a la reflexión.
The video starts with the vocalist of the band sitting on a stump while looking around, the landscape is completely empty, there are no trees, only grass, apart from the singer of the band we notice that the main protagonist of this video is the cinematography, obviously all this was generated by CGI but the effect worked quite well for the ambience, on the other hand we notice a grey tone in the filters they used, this with the motive of generating a depressive atmosphere that helps us to have empathy with what we see on screen, and as icing on the cake we have a shot that shows us the lightning in the sky, which in turn tells us that soon there will be a storm.
El video inicia con el vocalista de la banda sentado en un tocón mientras mira a su alrededor, el paisaje está completamente vacío, no hay árboles, solo pasto, a parte del cantante de la banda notamos que la principal protagonista de este video es la fotografía, obviamente todo esto fue generado por CGI pero el efecto funcionó bastante bien para la ambientación, por otra parte notamos un tono gris en los filtros que usaron, esto con el motivo de generar una atmósfera depresiva que nos ayude a tener empatía con lo que vemos en pantalla, y como guinda del pastel tenemos un plano que nos muestra los relámpagos en el cielo, lo que a su vez nos indica que pronto habrá una tormenta.
Scott Stapp (the vocalist) extends his arms to the sky because that is where his only hope lies, he knows that it is right there where the change he wants for his life will come from, but he also knows that it won't be easy, that's why you can perceive a bit of fear in his attitude, but also resignation, his life is not good, it could be better, it's true, but many times to be able to generate a change it is necessary to touch bottom, and that is what we begin to see next, because a kind of meteorite begins to fall from the sky, devastating everything around him, it is not water that falls from the sky, (what we all expected) but fire, something much worse, however fire not only has the capacity to destroy, but it is also synonymous with purification.
Scott Stapp (el vocalista) extiende los brazos al cielo porque es donde se encuentra su única esperanza, sabe que es justo desde allí donde vendrá el cambio que desea para su vida, pero también sabe que no será fácil, por eso se percibe un poco de miedo en su actitud, aunque también resignación, su vida no está bien, podría estar mejor, es cierto, pero muchas veces para poder generar un cambio es necesario tocar fondo, y es lo que comenzamos a ver a continuación, pues una especie de meteoritos comienza a caer del cielo, devastando todo a su alrededor, no es agua lo que cae del cielo, (lo que todos esperábamos) sino fuego, algo mucho peor, sin embargo el fuego no solo tiene la capacidad de destruir, sino que también es sinónimo de purificación.
Later our protagonist arrives at a tower that seems to be a place solid enough to take refuge from disaster, I think this could have many connotations, perhaps we can associate this refuge to God, or to our inner strength, whatever it is, it is a place to stay safe despite the inclemency of the external attack, then I notice that the cinematography of the video maintains its oppressive filters and opaque colours, because although the character has found hope, he is still accompanied by uncertainty.
Posteriormente nuestro protagonista llega hacia una torre que parece ser un lugar lo suficientemente sólido como para refugiarse del desastre, pienso que esto podría tener muchas connotaciones, tal vez podemos asociar este refugio a Dios, o a nuestra fuerza interna, sea lo que sea es un lugar para mantenerse a salvo a pesar de la inclemencia del ataque externo, entonces noto que la fotografía del video mantiene sus filtros opresivos y colores opacos, porque a pesar de que el personaje ha encontrado una esperanza, no deja de acompañarle la incertidumbre.
Then comes the best part, we see that suddenly a light illuminates the protagonist from above and immediately a rope falls that seems to be his only salvation, but just when you start to believe that he must climb up it, a bell falls from above, breaking the ground, creating a hole through which Scott must descend, which I interpret as, sometimes, in order to find a way out, This can be intimidating, because we often perceive ourselves in a different way to how we really are and when we discover who we are or how others perceive us we might be frightened, that's why the setting is cavernous, dark and gloomy.
Entonces llega la mejor parte, vemos que de pronto una luz ilumina al protagonista desde arriba e inmediatamente cae una soga que parece ser su única salvación, pero justo cuando comienzas a creer que él debe trepar por ella, una campana se precipita desde lo alto, rompiendo el suelo, creando un agujero a través del cual Scott deberá bajar, lo que interpreto como que, a veces, para encontrar una salida, el ser humano debe entrar a las profundidades de su alma para intentar entenderse a si mismo, para poder sanar internamente y poder proyectar esa fuerza al exterior, esto puede resultar intimidante, porque muchas veces nos percibimos de una forma diferente a como somos realmente y cuando descubrimos quienes somos o como nos perciben los demás podríamos asustarnos, por eso la ambientación es cavernosa, oscura y lúgubre.
Suddenly the light emerges that promises to get Scott out of that dark place, so he dives into the well to reach the exit, then is when he can finally admire the fruit of his effort, the exterior landscape changes completely, we see in the background the rising sun that welcomes him to a new world, only when you learn to know yourself and to forgive yourself you will be ready for change, you will receive it with arms wide open and everything will improve. This is reflected in the images we see in the video, the empty landscape changes to the sea as a synonym of freedom and fullness, the lighting also changes, we see golden tones that transmit security, warmth and confidence.
De pronto surge la luz que promete sacar a Scott de ese tenebroso lugar, así que se sumerge en el pozo para poder alcanzar la salida, entonces es cuando puede admirar finalmente el fruto de su esfuerzo, el paisaje exterior cambia por completo, vemos de fondo el sol naciente que le da la bienvenida a un mundo nuevo, solo cuando aprendes a conocerte y a perdonarte estarás listo para el cambio, lo recibirás con los brazos abiertos y todo mejorará. Esto se ve reflejado en las imágenes que vemos en el video, el paisaje vacío cambia por el mar como un sinónimo de libertad y plenitud, además también cambia la iluminación, vemos tonos dorados que transmiten seguridad, calidez y confianza.
It is one of the music videos that I liked the most because the audiovisual work accompanies the lyrics of the song very well, it perfectly represents the message that the band wanted to convey, in my opinion it is the best representation of human emotions. Es uno de los videos musicales que más me han gustado pues el trabajo audiovisual acompaña muy bien la letra de la canción, representa perfectamente el mensaje que la banda quiso transmitir, en mi opinión es la mejor representación de las emociones humanas. Este video para mí es Remember de Remember. Una canción que guardo con mucho cariño en mi corazón. Fue la primera canción que escuché de ellos y no sabía que el nombre de la agrupación significaba Credo, por eso llegué a pensar que podía ser un grupo religioso, ya sea católico o cristiano pero no. Aún así tiene canciones muy buenas con mensajes interesantes. Excelente post, gracias por hacerme recordar buenos tiempos.

Hacía mucho que no veía este tipo de contenido en la plataforma. Conocí a Creed con la canción Higher e inmediatamente me compré el disco Human Clay, uno de mis favoritos hasta hoy (volví a escucharlo hace poco) y cuando escuché With arms wide open por primera vez tuve la sensación de que había dado con un disco, una banda y un tema muy míos. Así que vi este video infinidad de veces y estoy de acuerdo con tu análisis e interpretación de los símbolos, las secuencias y la relación entre el video y la letra de la canción.

Muchas gracias, me alegra que te haya gustado, yo adoré el video en cuanto lo vi, al igual que My Sacrifice, sin embargo en su época With Arms Wide Open fue objeto de muchas críticas supuestamente por lo dramático del video y la "mala" dicción de Scott pero honestamente yo no le encuentro nada malo, para mi es un 10 de 10.
