Hello friends, it's been a long time since I last wrote something in this community but I really felt inspired after listening to several playlists of the best songs that marked my childhood and pre-adolescence, songs that came to stay in the subconscious and hearts of a generation that today remembers them with nostalgia. Join me on this train of memories in which we will take a walk through the best songs of the 90s in English and Spanish.

Hola amigos, hace mucho tiempo que no escribo algo en esta comunidad pero realmente me sentí inspirada luego de escuchar varias listas de reproducciones de las mejores canciones que marcaron mi infancia y preadolescencia, canciones que llegaron para quedarse en el subconsciente y los corazones de una generación que hoy en día las recuerda con nostalgia. Acompáñenme a abordar este tren de recuerdos en el que nos pasearemos través de las mejores canciones de los 90 en inglés y en español.

"Matador"

Matador is a song by the Argentinean band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs and was released in 1993. I remember like it was yesterday the times I listened to this song on the radio or when I watched the music video on the local channel called NC, which was always broadcasting the music videos of the most popular songs in the middle of the night. I liked this song for its catchy rhythm, those drums that incite to dance, although the lyrics talk about a murderer, at least that's the impression you get when you hear it, but as time went by I decided to investigate and I realised that in reality it's about a Chilean revolutionary, Victor Jara, who died at the hands of the police, that's why one of the verses says "my words are bullets of freedom and justice".

Matador es una canción de la banda argentina Los Fabulosos Cadillacs y fue lanzado en 1993,recuerdo como si fuera ayer las veces que escuché este tema por la radio o cuando veía el video musical en el canal local que se llamaba NC, más o menos a media noche siempre transmitían los videos musicales de las canciones más populares. Este tema me gustaba por su ritmo pegajoso, esos tambores que incitan al baile, aunque la letra habla de un asesino, al menos esa es la impresión que te da al oírla, pero con el paso del tiempo me propuse investigar y me di cuenta de que en realidad se trata de un revolucionario chileno, Víctor Jara, que murió a manos de la policía, por eso una de las estrofas dice "mis palabras son balas de libertad y justicia"

"Párate Y mira"

The following year, that is, in 1994 another Argentinian Reggae band called "Los Pericos" released their song "Párate y Mira" (Get up and Look) I remember that this was a boom in all the parties you attended at that time, that Caribbean rhythm accompanied by the Jamaican essence was the best, this made everyone want to dance, it was impossible not to think of beaches and fun, the drums and trumpets woke anyone up, haha I particularly remember that my cousin liked to sing this song imitating the original singer.

Al año siguiente, es decir, en 1994 otra banda argentina pero de Regge llamada "Los pericos" sacó al mercado su canción "Párate y Mira" recuerdo que esto era un boom en todas las fiestas a las que asistías en esa época, ese ritmo caribeño acompañado de la esencia jamaiquina era lo máximo, esto hacía que todo el mundo quisiera bailar, era imposible no pensar en playas y diversión, los tambores y trompetas despertaban a cualquiera, jaja recuerdo particularmente que a mi primo le gustaba cantar esta canción imitando al cantante original.

"Torn"

In 1997, when I was only twelve years old, this great song by the beautiful Natalie Imbruglia came out and made me fall madly in love with alternative music. At that time I didn't speak English, only my mother tongue (Spanish) but I dedicated myself to looking up the lyrics of the song to practice and sing it, and it really turned out to be a very effective exercise in phonetic training. The music video is simple but I loved watching it just to sing the song, the rhythm fascinates me, the colour of Natalia's voice is very nice too but the lyrics are unbeatable.

En el año 97, cuando yo tenía solo doce años surgió esta grandiosa canción de la hermosa Natalie Imbruglia que provocó que me enamorara perdidamente de la música alternativa, en esa época yo no hablaba inglés, solo mi lengua materna (el español) pero me dediqué a buscar la letra de la canción para practicarla y poder cantarla, y de verdad que resultó ser un ejercicio muy efectivo para ejercitar la fonética. El video musical es simple pero yo adoraba verlo tan solo para cantar la canción, el ritmo me fascina, el color de voz de Natalia es muy bonito también pero la letra es insuperable.

"Don´t Speak"

This song by the band No Doubt was released in 1996 but I must confess that I started listening to it and enjoying it much later, it was my prelude to alternative rock, I loved Gwen Stefani's powerful and seductive voice, and I also remember how much I loved the acoustic version of this iconic song. The music video had a particular concept that at the beginning evokes the human creation and its contamination through the ingestion of the forbidden fruit, it is art at its best, it also has a heartbreaking lyric I LOVE THIS SONG.

Esta canción de la banda No Doubt fue lanzada en 1996 pero debo confesar que yo comencé a escucharla y disfrutar mucho más tarde, fue mi antesala al rock alternativo, yo amaba la voz potente y seductora de Gwen Stefani, y también recuerdo lo mucho que amé la versión acústica de esta icónica canción. El video musical tenía un concepto particular que al inicio evoca la creación humana y su contaminación a través de la ingesta del fruto prohibido, es arte en su máxima expresión, además tiene una letra desgarradora AMO ESTA CANCIÓN.

"Azúcar Amargo"

In 1996 this wonderful Mexican singer captivated me not only with her first single "Azúcar Amargo" (bitter sugar) but also because Fey (the singer) marked an era and even a fashion trend with her plaid trousers and her bandana tied around her wrist, seriously, I, as well as all the girls of my time wanted to be like her, I ask my mom to buy me a pair of plaid trousers and then I would lock myself in my room for hours to practice Fey's dance steps, particularly those of "Azúcar Amargo". Some people say that listening to Fey and dancing to her songs was the equivalent of taking a Zumba class these days, in truth, almost all of her songs were super moving, fun and unforgettable.

En 1996 esta maravillosa cantante mexicana me cautivó no solo con su primer sencillo "Azúcar Amargo" sino porque Fey (la cantante) marcó una era y hasta una tendencia de moda con sus pantalones a cuadros y su bandana atada en la muñeca, en serio, yo, al igual que todas las niñas de mi época queríamos ser como ellas, en serio, le pedí a mi mamá que me comprara unos pantalones de cuadros y me encerraba en mi habitación por horas a practicar los pasos de baile de Fey, particularmente los de "Azúcar Amargo". Algunas personas opinan que escuchar a Fey y bailar sus canciones era el equivalente a tomar clases de Zumba actualmente, de verdad, casi todas sus canciones eran super movidas, divertidas e inolvidables.

"La Copa de la Vida"

In 1998 comes La copa de la vida (The cup of life) and it set a precedent in the music of the World Cup, I remember I loved its rhythm with drums and whistles that really makes you think of a good football match, Ricky Martin gave a lot of energy to this song not only with his beautiful voice but with his interpretation, who didn't sing the chorus of this song while doing the dance steps? The lyrics were very much in keeping with the World Cup, encouraging you to try hard and enjoy the moment. I honestly believe that after this only Shakira has made good songs for the world cup, Ricky Martin and her should team up to create something wonderful in the future.

En 1998 llega La copa de la vida y marcó un precedente en la música de los mundiales de Futbol, recuerdo que yo amaba su ritmo con tambores y silbatos que realmente te hace pensar en un buen partido de futbol, Ricky Martin le dio mucha energía a esta canción no solo con su preciosa voz sino con su interpretación, ¿quien no cantó el estribillo de esta canción mientras hacía los pasos de baile? La letra era muy acorde con la copa del mundo, que incitaba a esforzarse y disfrutar el momento. Honestamente creo que luego de esto solo Shakira ha hecho buenas canciones para el mundial, Ricky Martin y ella deberían aliarse para crear algo maravilloso en el futuro.

"Wannabe"

Ahhh I loved the Spice Girl and dreamed of being one of them, in 1996 when I heard the song Wannabe and saw the music video I loved seeing the very defined personalities of all the members, I identified with Emma, I wanted to be like her, but at the same time I loved Ginger (the redhead) her rhythms were catchy and her voices were harmonious, it was the first time I saw a girl band.

Ahhh yo amaba a las Spice Girl y soñaba con ser una de ellas, en 1996 cuando escuché el tema Wannabe y vi el video musical me encantó ver las personalidades tan definidas de todas las integrantes, yo me identificaba con Emma, quería ser como ella, pero al mismo tiempo me encantaba Ginger (la pelirroja) sus ritmos eran pegajosos y sus voces armoniosas, era la primera vez que yo veía una girl band.

"Get Down"

And how can I forget my beloved Backstreet Boys Ahhhhhhhh I'm still a fan, but the first song I heard of theirs was "Get Down" released in 1996, I fell in love with their rhythm and why not to say it? also with Brian haha. That beat so marked that had the pop of the 90's was unique and invited to dance, their dance steps also captivated me, I remember that I watched the video over and over and over again to try to memorize the steps, although I've never been very good at dancing. The Backstreet Boys marked an era in the pop of the 90s and also of the 2000s.

Y como olvidar a mis amados Backstreet Boys Ahhhhhh yo todavía sigo siendo su fan, pero la primera canción que escuché de ellos fue "Get Down" lanzada en 1996, me enamoré de su ritmo y ¿por qué no decirlo? también de Brian jaja. Ese beat tan marcado que tenía el pop de los años 90 era único e invitaba al baile, sus pasos de baile también me cautivaron, recuerdo que yo veía el video una y otra y otra vez para tratar de memorizar los pasos, aunque nunca he sido muy buena para el baile. Los Backstreet Boys marcaron una era en el pop de los años 90 y también de los años 2000.

Realmente la lista de mis canciones favoritas de los años 90 (sin ningún orden específico) es muy larga, así que es imposible para mi hablar de todas ellas en una única publicación, estas son solo algunas de ellas, pero me gustaría conocer tu opinión ¿Cuáles son tus canciones favoritas de esos tiempos? independientemente de que hayas vivido o no esa época, la música está allí y pudiste haberla conocido en los años siguientes ¿hay alguna canción en especial que haya marcado un hecho importante en tu vida o que te haga recordar una época en especifico?
