Videos that speak of me/Videos que hablan de mi [ENG-ESP]

The Swedish group AHA managed to captivate me with a video that told a story made with drawings and an animation that is still exquisite. Since I saw this clip I fell in love, let's say that to Take on me I owe my vocation for drawing and design, it was the first window to my professional future. In addition to the contagious melody (which today is even the ringtone of my cell phone) Take on me causes me a state of unspeakable happiness. I always found fabulous this work that moves between two realities and in which the story, a sort of fairy tale, goes through the twists and turns of fantasy without too many ornaments, barely anchored in the two-dimensional outline of characters that magically come to life.

Being an absolute 80's soul I'm going to punch below a video that is a total work of art, from my humble vision. Also my first contact with it was as a child and at present I maintain that it is one of the best clips ever produced. It is the turn of the genius of Michael Jackson and his Smooth Criminal

Watching Michael Jackson attempt his stratospheric choreographic routines, his vocal performance and the epocal setting work with all the details covered is a delight. How I dreamed of doing the moon walk ever since I saw this clip, or defying gravity with the risky poses he proposed. If Thriller is the classic (and I won't refer to it because a lot has already been said about its values) Smooth Criminal brings us a story within a story with a bigger journey. A video within the video, a quote from film noir, with a luxurious script and an unbeatable direction. Lights, scenery, costumes, characterization of characters, pieces in function of revealing a total product, millimetrically calculated. Michael always Michael...

And if we are talking about the King, the Queen is not far behind. If Michael used the reference of film noir to develop his mise en scène, Madonna, in Vogue, chooses to pay homage to the greats of the Hollywood industry.

Under the Pop aesthetics and flirting with kitch, Madonna proposed a revisitation of the icons, capturing the essence of their image and with photographic winks that recall the treatment of cinematographic lighting of the 40's, 50's, 60's: high contrasts that promote the sensuality of various stars whose names are mentioned in the text of the song, a whole constellation within the staging where Madonna herself assumes the challenge of interpreting them gesturally. During my studies of Scenic Design I returned again and again to this clip precisely as indispensable material for my training in terms of costumes and visual construction of characters.

Precisely, in my early youth I had the opportunity to meet other great works that undoubtedly contributed to my construction as an artist and impregnated my way of conceiving and proposing dialogues with my personal universe. More in tune with the 2000's, I had in Cold Play's materials reasons for delight and inspiration, aspects of communion of the most conceptual type. Many of his videos touch my soul because of his use of puppets, being a puppeteer myself. This is the case of Daddy, Life in Technicolor and Biutyful.

The three of them develop that world in which the puppet is a sign of other kinder realities. But Biutyful gets my greatest affection for dealing with the theme of social rejection, of self-marginalization, of the search for the self in the midst of hostility. It is a video that denotes extreme sensitivity and speaks to my own esteem, I identify with the characters, it is so me.

In the same sense, and finally, Soon will be Found by Sia is a delicacy and uncovers a wonderful construction of deep semiological content.

Several signs are used throughout the narrative discourse, from the language of the hands to the visual dialogue with black light and shadows (another of the recurring resources in my poetics), all in function of speaking of the need to escape to a dreamlike world, different from pain, where to encounter the magical whole, also as a necessary experience of life and in tune with the lyricism of the song, intertextuality manifest as in the rest of the video clip pieces cited throughout this proposal that I bring you today.

Many more works would fit in this space but I am afraid to continue extending. I believe that these videos I have quoted capture my essence and I hope I have successfully conveyed my reasons for holding them in such high esteem. El grupo sueco AHA logró cautivarme con un video que narraba una historia hecha con dibujos y una animación que sigue siendo exquisita. Desde que vi este clip me enamoré, digamos que a Take on me le debo mi vocación por el dibujo y el diseño, fue la primera ventana a mi futuro profesional. Además de la contagiosa melodía (que hoy es el timbre de mi móvil, incluso) Take on me me provoca un estado de felicidad indecible. Siempre me resultó fabulosa esta obra que se mueve entre dos realidades y en la que la historia, suerte de cuento de hadas, transita por los vericuetos de la fantasía sin demasiados adornos, apenas afianzada en el trazado bidimensional de personajes que cobran vida mágicamente.

Siendo un alma absolutamente ochentera voy a ponchar a continuación un video que es una obra de arte total, desde mi humilde visión. También mi primer contacto con él fue de niña y en el presente sostengo que es uno de los mejores clips que se han producido. Corresponde el turno al genio de Michael Jackson y su Smooth Criminal

Ver a Michael Jackson intentar sus estratosféricas rutinas coreográficas, su desempeño vocal y el trabajo de ambientación epocal con todos los detalles cubiertos es una delicia. Como soñé hacer el moon walk desde que vi este clip, o desafiar a la gravedad con las arriesgadas posturas que proponía. Si Thriller es el clásico (y no me referiré a él porque ya mucho se ha hablado sobre sus valores) Smooth Criminal nos trae una historia dentro de otra historia con un recorrido mayor. Video dentro del video, cita del cine negro, con un guión de lujo y una dirección inmejorable. Luces, escenografía, vestuario, caracterización de personajes, piezas en función de revelar un producto total, milimétricamente calculado. Michael siempre Michael…

Y si del Rey hablamos pues, la Reina no queda detrás. Si Michael se valió del referente del cine negro para desarrollar su mise en escene, Madonna, en Vogue, opta por homenajear a los grandes de la industria Holliwoodense.

Bajo la estética del Pop y coqueteando con el kitch, Madonna propuso una revisitación a los íconos, captando la esencia de su imagen y con guiños fotográficos que recuerdan al tratamiento de la iluminación cinematográfica de los años 40´,50´,60´: altos contrastes que promueven la sensualidad de diversas estrellas cuyos nombres se van mencionando en el texto de la canción, toda una constelación dentro de la puesta donde la propia Madonna asume el reto de interpretarlos gestualmente. Durante mis estudios de Diseño Escénico volví una y otra vez sobre este clip precisamente como material indispensable para mi formación en lo que a la parte del vestuario y construcción visual de personajes se refiere.

Precisamente, en mi primera juventud tuve ocasión de conocer otras grandes obras que, sin dudas, aportaron a mi construcción como artista e impregnaron mi manera de concebir y proponer diálogos con mi universo personal. Ya más a tono con los 2000´ tuve en los materiales de Cold Play razones de deleite e inspiración, aspectos de comunión del tipo más conceptual. Muchos de sus videos tocan mi alma por su empleo de las marionetas, siendo yo titiritera. Es el caso de Daddy, Life in Technicolor y Biutyful.

Los tres desarrollan ese mundo en el que le títere es signo de otras realidades más amables. Pero Biutyful se lleva mis mayores afectos por tratar el tema del rechazo social, de la automarginación, de la búsqueda del yo en medio de la hostilidad. Es un video que denota una sensibilidad extrema y conversa con mi propia estima, me identifico con los personajes, es tan yo.

En ese mismo sentido, y por último, Soon will be Found de Sia es un exquisitez y descubre una maravillosa construcción de contenido semiológico profundo.

Varios son los signos que se emplean a lo largo del discurso narrativo, desde el lenguaje de las manos hasta el diálogo visual con la luz negra y las sombras (otro de los recursos recurrentes en mi poética), todo en función de hablar de la necesidad de escapar a un mundo onírico, distinto del dolor, donde encontrarse con el todo mágico, también como necesaria experiencia de vida y a tono con el lirismo de la canción, intertextualidad manifiesta como en el resto de las piezas de video clip citadas a lo largo de esta propuesta que hoy les traigo.

Muchas obras más caben en este espacio pero temo seguir extendiéndome. Creo que estos videos que he citado logran captar mi esencia y espero haber transmitido con éxito mis razones para tenerlos en tanta estima. También es mi deseo que hayan disfrutado de este contenido tanto como yo disfruté revisar estos videos y escribir al respecto. Sería maravilloso si @roswelborges y @cumanauta se sumaran a esta iniciativa, compartiéndonos sobre sus videos musicales favoritos.
