HIVE OPEN MIC WEEK 337 – THEME: EXHAUSTION – “DAALU NNA” (GUITAR & SAXOPHONE VERSION)

It’s been about 20 weeks since my last post in the Hive Open Mic, so it feels really good to be back. I’ve honestly been quite exhausted these days, and somehow that made this week’s theme feel very relatable. Sometimes you’re just tired—physically, mentally, or simply from everything going on around you.

For this week’s theme, “Exhaustion,” I chose “Daalu Nna” by Obonna. Daalu Nna is an Igbo expression that means “Thanks, Father.” It’s a beautiful and powerful song, and that choir chorus is just incredible. I’ve seen so many people enjoying the song and using it for different TikTok challenges, and I can understand why. There’s something about the song that gives you energy.

Even though I’ve been feeling quite exhausted lately, this song somehow does the opposite to me. It gives me a little push whenever I hear it. So I thought it would be interesting to approach the theme from that perspective—not by trying to hide the exhaustion, but by playing something that gives me a bit of energy in the middle of it.

This time, I decided to play the melody on my guitar and invited my friend Richie, who is a saxophonist, to join me. He played the second voice, almost like the choir part of the original song. That way, the arrangement wouldn’t feel too empty, and we could give it a little of the feeling of the original while keeping it as an instrumental version.

I really enjoyed putting this together, especially because “Daalu Nna” is one of those songs that already carries so much energy on its own. I hope you enjoy our little version of it, and maybe it gives you a bit of energy too—especially if you’re feeling exhausted yourself.
