Three Tunes Tuesday - Dennis Van Aarsen

Much like other jazz singers, he also released an album called “ Christmas When You’re here” with over 13 songs. It spans over 42 minutes and is so easy to listen to. If you love jazz and listen to it while reading/studying, even the Christmas songs can be listened to at any time.

Best Work

This year, he released an album Just Call it love with Jeff Franzel on the piano. There’s 11 songs and some of them are written by Dennis himself like “Cloudy” which is the opening of the album. But in this album my favorite is definitely Just Call It Love and She.

Perhaps it’s me who rarely ventures out and goes out of my way to find Jazz singers but those I find are always older looking “daddy” in their 40’s like Daniel Boaventura & Michael Bublé. So, having a younger and fresher voice singing jazz, swing and pop jazz are much needed.

Previous Work

When you listen to the full album, it’s pretty melodic and soothing. It’s definitely the best when you listen to it to read or study. Jazz always has that melancholic, easy listening vibe as well as harmonious melody. But there is also upbeat jazz where it makes you joyful. Usually a lot of Christmas songs have that jolly vibe compared to the regular jazz songs.

And this is a really fun performance of his during The Voice and his voice is really smooth and unlike the songs that you typically hear these days. And when he sings Mr Bojangles, he shows another character of his voice that sounds pretty versatile.

That being said, if you enjoy jazz, you should give him a listen because his voice is smooth and somehow can remind us of Frank Sinatra
